First International Workshop on “Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Plant and Animal Genetic Resources:
The Nordic Model and its possible application in Chile”.
January 12-16, 2009, CHILE The Universidad de Los Lagos will be the host of the workshop activities in the Campuses
of Santiago (central Chile) and Osorno (southern Chile). The Technological Center for Sustainable Native Forest (CTBNS) and the Programme FITOGEN extend a warm invitation to the International Workshop entitled: “Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Plant and Animal Genetic Resources: The Nordic Model and its possible application in Chile”. The workshop has been planned to increase awareness in Chile of the importance of conserving and sustainable using genetic resources in plants and animals. Considering the long trajectory and recognized experience of the Nordic countries in the field of genetic resources the Nordic model is expected to be used as a reference for the discussions in the workshop. The objectives of the workshop are:
(1) to promote the value of genetic resources in plants and animals from Chile and the Nordic countries,
(2) to obtain guidelines on what conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources ought to be in Chile based on the Nordic Model, and
(3) to stimulate collaboration, information exchange and networking between Chilean and Nordic scientists in the field of biodiversity preservation, development of methodologies and tools for the characterization and evaluation of genetic resources, sustainable management, know-how development, business development, policy-making, among other related topics.
(*) The Technological Center for Sustainable Native Forest (CTBNS) was recently created by a consortium of four state universities in Chile (“Universidad de Los Lagos”, “Universidad de Chile”, “Universidad de La Frontera” and “Universidad de Magallanes”) to promote scientific research, development, innovation, and application of technologies for fostering the conservation, management and long-term use of Chilean native forest and its biodiversity. The Chilean biodiversity is considered by international organizations to be a hot spot of high conservation concern because of its high percentage of endemic taxa, which are represented in a landscape mosaic of native forest patches, plantations, open lands, rivers, lakes, and volcanoes, many of them, not well protected.
(**) FITOGEN is a Program for Conservation, Management and Sustainable Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources in Southern Chile, Universidad de Los Lagos, Chile.
PRELIMINARY WORKSHOP AGENDA 0BSaturday/Sunday, January 10-11 Arrival of participants to Santiago, Chile. 1BMonday, January 12 The workshop starts with one day of lecturing about only Plant Genetic Resources. Place: Campus República at Universidad de Los Lagos (Santiago). Lectures: 30 minutes presentation and 10 minutes questions.
