CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, we look around us and we acknowledge the presence of conflict, pain and suffering. We know that we can lessen the pain when we reach out to those who are hurting. We confess that there are times when we fail to recognize the needs of others and forget to share your love. Forgive us when we happily accept the blessings of life while neglecting to serve as Jesus served. Empower us with your Spirit to be strong yet gentle bearers of your love and compassion. This we pray in the name of Jesus.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* RESPONSE Festival Canticle

This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. This is the feast….

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified.

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Response - “And also with you.”)

TODAY’S MUSIC In honor of Anniversary Sunday, today’s prelude is by our former organist Frank Treat Southwick (1857-1948). Son of Daniel Franklin Southwick, Frank studied music under Theodore Thomas, Otto Singer and George E. Whiting of New York. At age 15, he became organist of the First Baptist Church of Meriden. He later served as organist at Christ Church, Hartford; Church of the Holy Trinity, Middletown; First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, New Jersey (1884-86 and 1904-17); and in New York City at the Church of the Holy Trinity, St. Andrew’s & the West End Presbyterian Church. At FPC Southwick instituted a series of Sunday afternoon Vesper concerts sung by the vocal quartet. Born in St. Paul, Richard Proulx (1937-2010) was long associated with Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago and was a leading composer of music for the post-Vatican II

Catholic liturgy. British born Healey Willan (1880-1968) emigrated to Canada in 1913 to be music director at Toronto’s largest church, St. Pauls. Financially secure in the royalties from his many publications he moved the the Anglo-Catholic “high church” parish of St. Mary Magdalene in 1921 and remained until his death. Of his 800 compositions, he is best know for his organ and choral church music. Ola Gjielo (b. 1978) was born in Skui, Norway and showed musical promise from an early age. He studied composition at the Royal School of Music and at the Juilliard School in New York, where he now resides. The 24 pieces in free style published in 1914 by Louis Vierne (1870-1937), organist of Notre Dame de Paris, like Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and Chopin’s Preludes are each in a different major or minor key. These pieces were all conceived to be played on a harmonium (pump organ) or on a small pipe organ. The C minor Cortege is a masterpiece of energy and balance.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Psalm 68:1-10 (NRSV) 1Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee before him. 2As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, let the wicked perish before God. 3But let the righteous be joyful; let them exult before God; let them be jubilant with joy. 4Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds—his name is the LORD— be exultant before him. 5Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. 6God gives the desolate a home to live in; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious live in a parched land. 7O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, 8the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, at the presence of God, the God of Israel. 9Rain in abundance, O God, you showered abroad; you restored your heritage when it languished; 10your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.

They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.
