The Social Ministry Commission will be hosting its Fall Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, October 10 from 7:30 am to 12 noon. Currently, the greatest need is for Quilts, Personal Care Kits, School Kits, and monetary donations for LWR shipping costs. As always, Baby Care Kits, Fabric Kits, and bars of soap are also in demand.
“Let the word of Christ
dwell in you richly
in all wisdom; teaching and
admonishing one another
in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with grace
in your hearts to the Lord.”
Colossians 3:16

Rejoice in the Lord! Dear Friends in Christ,
It’s always good to practice the “fundamentals,” whether in a sport, music, home life, work or our spiritual life. Through the fundamentals we develop the disciplines that help us to be successful and weather the tough times.
For instance in football, blocking, tackling, playing your position, holding on to the ball, listening to the coach, etc. are fundamental to the game. Forget them for something fancy and it could spell defeat.
In the Christian walk of discipleship fundamentals are im-portant as well. The fundamentals of the Spirit-filled life are delineated in Galatians 5:22-23:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who be-long to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
As we see here, there are nine aspects of the fruit of the Spirit of God that are to mark our lives: (1)
Love, (2)
Joy, (3)
Peace, (4) Patience, (5)
Kindness, (6)
Goodness, (7)
Faith-
fulness, (8) Gentleness, and (9)
Self-control. In our Sunday
morning themes, we began on September 20th with Loving Hearts–the Mark of Disciples (John 13:34-35). We plan to continue on this path for a while with Joy in October. We plan to discover joy in, perhaps for some, a surprising place: Joy in Giving!
We so often attempt to live life in our own strength. One of the fundamentals, even of the Christian life, is that we live life together with others—like a team! (Team work is a fun-damental of sports—even with individual-type sports that have trainers, coaches and others supporting their efforts.) So together we gather in congregation on Sundays and oth-er times to support, encourage and give life to one another. Plus, we have the Spirit of the Living Lord Jesus Christ in our hearts and souls to guide us through His Word into life in all its fullness!
In the light of His love, Pastor John F. Holt
Blessed to be a Blessing!

“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9
We will be starting our annual Stewardship Campaign this month. The theme this year is “The Joy of Giving.” We have all had the experience of giving or sharing something special with someone we care about, and we have all felt the joy that comes when you see that person’s reaction to the gift. When we give to others in a true spirit of generosity, we don’t expect or want anything in return. The true reward comes in the form of the love and thanks we get in return, and in strengthening our relationships with those we care about. Giving to another person is a way of opening up and inviting them to share a part of our lives.
Sometimes when we pass the collection plate down the pew, it can seem a bit like a duty or obligation rather than an opportunity for joy, but it shouldn’t be that way. God has blessed all of us with all that we have, and we are to be joyful in our stewardship of His gifts. Just as the act of giving to a friend or loved one invites them to share part of our lives, the act of giving to God invites Him into our hearts and lives, and opens us to His grace, love and abundance.
So as our campaign kicks off, we should view it not as a duty but as a time to renew our commitment to Jesus Christ and invite Him into our daily lives. ~Steve Schulz, for the FLC Stewardship Commission

Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club is a minis-try of the Albert Lea Chapter of Youth for Christ. The mission of the breakfast club is to serve muf-fins, juice, and Jesus to middle schoolers at Southwest in Albert Lea. The club has grown from a weekly attendance of 32 two years ago to 107 at the end of last year. There were student participants who held a Bible in their hands for the first time while at a morning meeting. Then the volun-teers teach and share faith with the students before they start their day. This is Evangelism! This important ministry is led by DeeAnn Berglund, who is a staff member at The Rock. This ministry needs our help in the form of money for miscellane-ous items and the rental fee for the room. However, the big-gest need is for the MUFFINS! The muffins are not catered. They are lovingly baked by volunteers and DeeAnn herself. Sometimes stu-dents gather and help with the baking. Those interested in donating home baked muffins can contact DeeAnn at 383-5088. The muffins are brought to the rock on Monday's or Tuesday's so they are ready for Wednesday morning each week. DeeAnn has containers to transfer the muffins into so you leave the rock with your container and there is no need to stop back. If you need more information there are post cards located at the iServe board in the gathering space.
MUFFINS JUICE AND JESUS
All church women are invited.
All guests welcome!

MUSICAL NOTES MUSICAL NOTES (cont.)
God continues to deal in my life. I honestly feel like an unlikely and unworthy vessel to do God's work, but He continues to give me a path and provide a way for things to happen. Discipleship and service are constantly on my mind. I ask God daily what I must do in my service to Him and the church. I ask myself daily if I am doing what God expects. I ask myself daily if I am doing enough. My conversations with God do give some clarity on my personal service to Him. He has made it clear that He has put a light in all of us and expects that we will let it shine. Matthew 5:14-16 says, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. They put it on a stand and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glo-ry to your Father who is in heaven." I am confident that God expects our very best every day. He wants us to strive for the best in all we do and espe-cially in our service to Him. Sometimes, I am afraid that my passion and en-thusiasm for my work are misunderstood by others. My voice is loud. You can hear me coming down the hallway--a mile away. I am passionate when I discuss things that have deep meaning to me and things that are related to my service to God. I am a big guy, with a bald head. I look like a linebacker for the Vikings or Packers (or Broncos). Please always know that my passion for my work and the standard of excellence that I know God expects is what you hear in my voice and see in my mannerisms. The wise men did not simply bring gifts to Baby Jesus--they brought their finest. In Biblical times, they did not sacrifice the runt of the herd--they used the "fatted" calf. I know God expects our best. He expects that we will let our lights shine BRIGHTLY in His name. I am going to do my best to do just that! Alleluia!

Summer is a very busy and precious time in Minnesota. Many families and individuals attend church less regularly during the summer months while pursuing travel and leisure opportunities that are limited to our short summer months. The Evangelism Commission is eager to wel-come everyone back into a more consistent routine as the fall school schedule kicks off and attendance at church increases. Hebrews 10:25 speaks to the importance of making worshiping together a habit, and a regular occurrence. We would like to propose several easy ways to advance your commitment or service to our church and to others in the following ways:
Signup your son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandchildren, or oth-er special child in your life for Sunday School! Rally Sunday is Septem-ber 13!
Bake Muffins and drop off at the Rock for "Morning Muffins" for mid-dle-schoolers starting September 16. Contact DeeAnn at 373-1015 for more information.
Ask someone you love about a goal you can make together regarding your own growth in faith this coming fall. Make growth in faith a priority and bring a loved one with you!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC?
School of Healing Prayer Coming to First Lutheran! By Pastor Diane Odermann In reading the gospels, have you ever noticed the parables and stories where Jesus healed people’s diseases? Maybe you have desired that healing for yourself. Maybe you have wondered how you could offer healing for others. I don’t know about you, but when I was a young Christian I wanted to be able to do the things Jesus did. Through the Holy Spirit, we become the vessels for God to work healing for those who are hurting physically, spiritually, or emotionally. God is the one who heals and we are the vessels God will use to bring that healing. Pastor Joel Erickson and I have been through the training and teaching for just such a min-istry by Francis and Judith MacNutt in Jacksonville, FL. On November 15, I will be holding an adult forum on healing and what such a class would entail. When you need prayer...Call the prayer chain coordinators, Betty Ruud 373-5906 or Ione Kelly 373-2141. All prayer requests are handled confidentially.
To support people at the time of illness or injury we pastors do make personal visits in the hospital, homes or Care Centers. We occasion-ally check local hospital lists, but sometimes names do not show up on the list. So, please, call, if you want us to know. We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church, if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. Pastors’ numbers are on the recording when you phone the church office af-ter hours. We ask permission before we include a name on our print-ed prayer list. Please let us know if you want to be on the list or be
visited. ~Your FLC Pastors

cal tradition. We hope to sign up 3 to 4 peo-ple each month. Therefore your service would be needed for one month of Sundays for the year. We meet 6 times per year, on Tuesday evenings for Fellowship. This November 24 at 6:00pm a dinner will be served to anyone coming to sign up for a month of service.
