Ministry Fair in the Parish Hall- August 24
What makes First Lutheran a church? It’s the
people – called together by God. And it’s all the
ministries the people are actively engaged in by
the calling and help of God. Ministry is not a
spectator sport – it is actively loving God and lov-
ing neighbor with the gifts, strengths, passions
and abilities that God first gave us.
I have to say, this congregation is engaged in a
LOT of ministry! Next Sunday, you are all invited
to step out and learn more about all the minis-
tries of First Lutheran! I guarantee, there will be
information on things you didn’t even know we
did! All of our ministries will be represented.
These past couple of weeks our ministry events
have brought us notice on the front page of the
local newspaper. They brought us attention, in
part I think, because we were reaching out be-
yond ourselves. The Shanty Town event raised
awareness of issues of poverty housing, brought

Lessons For the Day
Sun., Aug. 17th: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8
Psalm 67
Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32
Matthew 15:10-28
Sun., August 24th: Isaiah 51:1-6
Psalm 138
Romans 12:1-8
Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus teaches his disciples
that true purity is a matter
of the heart rather than out-
ward religious observances.
Almost immediately, this
teaching is tested when a
woman considered to be
pagan and unclean ap-
proaches him for help.
At a climactic point in Je-
sus’ ministry, God reveals
to Peter that Jesus is “the
Messiah, the Son of the liv-
ing God,” and Jesus re-
sponds with the promise of
a church that will overcome
the very gates of Hades.
“YOU ARE THE
MESSIAH, THE
SON OF THE
LIVING GOD.”

County. The Pet Blessings
brought together people and pets
from all over the community to
pause and give thanks for our an-
imal companions. The offering
from that event, $101, went to
the two local animal shelters.
I was approached this morning by
a company that apparently fol-
lows newspapers and calls people
who “made the front page” and
offers to put your article in a nice
mahogany frame. The friendly tel-
ephone salesperson was halfway
through her sales pitch to me
when I gently informed her that
we don’t do these things to put
memories in frames. Our church
does these things because they
are ministry.
Here’s why a Ministry Fair is im-
portant – It’s an opportunity to
celebrate what God has begun
and accomplished in us here and
to see displays and talk to people
who are involved in various

Sing to the Lord
a Joyful Song!
Throughout history God’s faith-
ful people have lifted their singing
voices in praise, prayer and
thanksgiving to God as a part of
worship. Martin Luther wrote
hymns and songs so that all peo-
ple could worship God in song,
not just the choirs. But there is
still a place for people to share
their musical gifts in choirs in
our worship, to provide prepared
music and to support the singing
of the congregation. If you enjoy
singing and would like to use or
grow your musical gifts we have a
choir for you! Speak to a choir
member or Bette Mohr for more
information. There is always room
for more singers!
Senior Choir:
If you love to sing, this is the
group for you! Sr. High youth,
college youth and adults gather
every Thursday night from 7:00
pm-8:00 pm in the East wing of
the Parish Hall to sing, laugh and
prepare music for worship. This
group anchors the music pro-
gram singing at Sunday worship
about three times a month. You
are invited to share in this minis-
try of word and song.
Children’s Choir:
Children in Kindergarten
through Grade 5 meet on
Wednesdays, usually from 3:30-5
pm, following the public school
calendar September though April.
This choir meets for activities af-
ter school, a snack, a Bible story,
and a monthly card making min-
istry. In addition to preparing a
song monthly for worship, chil-
dren also learn how to use their
singing voice and how to partici-
pate in worship.
Youth Choir:
Jr. High youth and Sr. High
youth form occasional choirs
scattered throughout the year.
Rehearsals for Jr. High youth are
held on Wednesdays following
Confirmation Classes. Sr. High
youth meet to rehearse either on
Sunday morning or Sunday even-
ing following FLY High youth
meetings.

Sunday School
The Christian Education Com-
mittee is looking forward to the
start of a new year of Bible clas-
ses for all ages, preschool through
adult, with Rally Sunday activities
& Installation of Teachers on
Sept. 7th during worship, and the
start of classes on Sept. 14th.
We are making several changes
this year in the materials that we
use and the ways that we are
planning to help equip parents to
participate in shepherding their
children and youth through the
years in their faith formation. We
Other Musical Opportunities
We appreciate the addition of
vocal soloists, pianists and musi-
cal instruments during worship
for preludes, offertories, com-
munion, and postludes or instru-
ments to add color to our hymns,
liturgy or choir pieces. Contact
Bette Mohr to find out how you
can share your musical talents
occasionally as a soloist, in small
groups or ensembles with others.
hope that you will find these
changes exciting and a way to
grow as a family and as a disciple
of our Savior Jesus Christ.
The committee is also looking
for a few more teachers to partner
in teaching classes this year.
Most often two teachers share a
class by teaching every other
month and functioning as subs
for each other, occasionally both
teachers are in the classroom to
assist with activities or team
teach.
If you would like more infor-
mation or to volunteer to teach
the Preschool or Jr. High class,
please contact Julie Wiegand or
Bette Mohr.

LWR Personal Care Kits
Thank you for your donations
for Care Kits so far this year; they
are always appreciated. For the
month of August we are challeng-
ing you to bring metal nail clip-
pers and sturdy combs to the LWR
container in the Parish Hall. It will
soon be time to assemble kits and
we usually come up short.
MINISTRY FAIR!
Come to the Ministry Fair and
lunch on August 24th! Commit-
tees, organizations, and other
ministries are preparing displays
and would love to share their pas-
sions for ministry and answer
your questions about what is
happening at First Lutheran. Who
knows, there may be gifts, raffles
or snacks too! It wouldn’t be a
fair without some surprises.
Heavy Burdens?
As I write this, the news of the
death of Robin Williams is very
fresh. I can’t even imagine counting
the number of times this brilliant
actor has made me laugh.
It got me to thinking again, that
we never really know what burdens
another person might be carrying.
Think gently about others, whether
they are sitting next to you in
church or standing behind you in
the grocery line, and of course eve-
rywhere else you encounter others.
If you are carrying a heavy burden
that seems too much for you, please
talk to someone.

helping us through.
Please continue to remember us

Hasn’t road construction been
fun? The weeks of construction
traffic have taken their toll on the
interior of the building and our
surrounding property in addition
to our normal wear and tear.
We could use your helping
hands again on Saturday, Sep-
tember 13th 9am – Noon as we
work on some projects and begin
doing some deeper cleaning in
and around the building. People
of all ages and skill levels are wel-
come.
It would be a good occasion to
break out those golden “God’s
Work, Our Hands” t-shirts again
or any other comfy work clothes
you like. Mark your calendars
now and stay tuned for more in-
formation.

Graceful Generosity Published to help you grow
as a Steward of God’s Grace.
Answering the Question
of Ownership
One of the basic principles of steward-
ship is that God owns all things. God is
the owner, and we are the managers or
caretakers of what God gives us. If we
were asked who owns all things, we
would, without hesitation, say, “God
owns everything!” However, do our ac-
tions and lifestyles reflect God’s owner-
ship? Do we act like owners or manag-
ers? Do we seek to do God’s will with our
time and money?
God’s Word gives us a wonderful story
on how a person’s attitude toward owner-
ship completely changed after he came
to faith. In Luke chapter 19, we r3ead
about Zacchaeus, a tax collector, who
loved his money. He was wealthy, and
he had cheated people to gain even
more money. His money was his god.
Jesus entered his house and changed
his heart. After coming to know Jesus,
Zacchaeus no longer saw his money as
his own. His life and money no longer
belonged to himself because he knew
that God was the creator and the owner
of all things. Through faith, he gave half
of his possessions to the poor and rec-
ompensed four times the amount those
he had cheated. Jesus told Zacchaeus,
“Today salvation has come to this
house…”
In the same way through faith, our per-
ception of ownership changes. Just as
Zacchaeus came to understand that God
owned his property, we acknowledge
that God is the source of all things. We
may have possession of many things,
but God is the owner. As God’s stew-
ards, we are responsible and accounta-
ble to God.
The same faith that prompted Zac-
chaeus to give so generously is given to
us. As we acknowledge God’s love for us
and his ownership of all things, our think-
ing will change from how much we are
going to give to how much of God’s prop-
erty we’re going to keep.
May God grant us hearts of wisdom to
enable us to understand that he is the
source and owner of all!

We Belong Here
Faith Story
by Diana Riley
My grandparents emigrated
from Sweden. My maternal
grandmother came in 1887 and
she attended this church when it
was the Swedish Lutheran
Church. My mother, Helen
Youngberg Ecklund, was baptized
and confirmed in First Lutheran
Church. My two sisters and I
were baptized and confirmed in
First Lutheran also.
As a child I attended Sunday
School, Bible School and enjoyed
Luther League in the teen years.
While in Luther League I was able
to travel to Luther League con-
ventions in Colorado Springs,
Boston and Calgary Alberta Can-
ada with other Lutheran youth.
What an inspiration these con-
ventions were and still remain a
fond memory today.
I married my husband Jim in
First Lutheran Church and we
raised three children here also.
As you can see this precious
church has always been a very
important part of my life.
Last year Jim and I had a great
experience traveling with a
Thrivent led group to El Salvador
to work on a Worldwide Habitat
for Humanity build. We were able
to eat and live with people of a
different culture and experience
firsthand the burden of sub-
standard housing. We worked
along with the partner family,
Salvadorian construction workers
and members of our group. We
used methods and tools very
primitive to what we would use in
the United States.
This trip opened my eyes to
how little these people have and
how happy they are. I also feel we
gave the people of this communi-
ty a positive glimpse of Americans
helping others.
