Welcome From The General Co-Chairmen

On behalf of the INES 2003 Steering Committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 7th International Conference on Intelligent Engineering Systems (INES 2003) to be held in Assiut and Luxor, Egypt on 4-6 th March 2003.

The growing international competition in the industrial arena has created a demand for the introduction of intelligent techniques to solve various industrial problems and to improve product quality and production process efficiency, as well as reduce production costs. The aim of the INES conference series is to provide researchers and practitioners from industry and academia with a platform to report on recent developments in the areas of computational intelligence, Intelligent Control Systems, Intelligent Robotics and Mechatronics, Intelligent Communication Systems and Signal Processing . INES 2003 focuses on the application of state-of-the-art intelligent techniques in engineering systems. The conference location is Assiut and Luxor – Egypt.

We would like to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of the Secretary General, Technical Program Chairman, the Organizing Committee members, the Technical Program Committee members and all those persons responsible for the background activities from local arrangements to conference secretariat. We also want to thank many volunteers who have contributed lots of time and effort to bring INES 2003 to reality. Our pleasant duty is to gratefully acknowledge the support provided by the sponsors of the conference: Assiut University, Egypt, Budapest Polytechnic, Hungary, IEEE R8, IEEE Hungary Section, IEEE Joint Chapter of R&A and IES, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, IEEE Communications Society, Hungarian Fuzzy Association. We hope that all attendances of INES 2003 will find this event intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ASSIUT

About Assiut

Assiut City is the capital of Assiut Governorate, the largest settlement of Upper Egypt. It is located on the west Bank of the River Nile, 375 Km south Cairo. The Nile water is dammed after reaching the city of Assiut and, immediately before Assiut Barrage, the Ibrahimiya Canal branches from Nile and ends at Giza near Cairo.

The present name of City of Assiut originates from an Ancient Egyptian city called “Seut”, which was the capital of the thirteenth Nome (province) out of twenty one Nomes of Ancient upper Egypt. During the Ptolmaic regien “Seut” turned to be called “Lycoplis”, namely “Wolf-city” which might have been a reference to the Wolf-headed God, Wepawety, which was worshipped at that time. The city went on to be called “Lycoplis” until the advent of Chritinity to Egypt and the use of Coptic language. Since then , the name of the city came to be written in Coptic as “ Ciwoyt”. But with the arrival of Islam in 640 A.C. , Arabic replaced Coptic and the name of the city came to be called , as it used to be at the ancient Egyptian time, “Suet” or “ Assiut”.

While the city was unable to challenge the power of the Thebes, it was commercially prominent as terminus of caravan routes traversing the Eastern and Western Desert. Under Islam, Assiut retained its commercial prominence, being noted for its quality textiles which, fine fruits and grain grown near the city, were exported to Darfur and elsewhere in Sudan. Returning caravans imported ivory and dyestuff.

Continuing its ancient tradition, Assiut is one of the few remaining places where silver appliqué- work shawls, fine pottery, inlaid mother of Pearl woodwork and urges are still made. There are also modern textiles, fertilizers, cement and petroleum industries. Recently, the City has flourished and gained considerable importance after the establishment of Assiut University in 1957 and a branch of Al-Azhar University in the early 1970s. Now, the population of Assiut governorate is about 2,802,000.

About Assiut University

Assiut University was inaugurated in October 1957. Up to that date facilities for tertiary education in Egypt were limited to the tow large cities, namely Cairo and Alexandria. This centralization was not to interest of the southern part of the country, which extends in a vallystrip, some 900 Km south of Cairo.

The University recruits its students from schools of the southernmost governorates of Egypt. Also, some students from other governorates and from other Arab states are enrolled at the University.

The University provides over 2000 undergraduate and postgraduate degree program in physical and biological sciences, engineering, humanities, education, physical education, social and economic studies, arts law, medicine, veterinary, and agriculture.

Assiut University started in 1957 with 500 undergraduate students and some 10 research students. The total number (including some 5913 research student) has risen to about 69054 of both sexes during the academic year 1999/2000. The number of faculty members is now about 1735 the number of scientific assistant is about 1123.

The University campus is rather one of the rare examples of a complete campus in Egypt, comprising both academic buildings and living accommodation for a section of the staff and student population. Assiut University has a good contact with the local community and the whole region north and south of it. Hence, the University has built up it status as a provincial institution in the service of the community and the whole neighborhood.

The council of the University is the higher body of supervision, which draws the policy of turning the University, its composed of the President, Vice-Presidents, the deans of the faculties and a small number of external members including the governor of the region.
