First Presbyterian Church is a Stephen Ministry Congregation

Mission Statement In response to the love and grace of

God, First Presbyterian Church of Wichita, Kansas, is a fellowship of believers bound together to glorify

God and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ through worship, spiritual nurturing, education and

mission to all people.

From the Pastor’s Desk

“This is where our church excels. Through our Parish Nurse, our Stephen Ministers, our Deacons, and our Shep-herds, First Church cares for you because Christ cares for you… so much that he died for you that you might have life… so much that he becomes for you the way to pattern your life to experience the abundant life God in-tended for you from the very beginning. This is why Christ sends out the

‘Seventy’ even today. The Good News is too good to keep to ourselves. So, to answer the question what would cause someone to drive by seventy churches to come to this church? The answer is because First Church cares. We care so much about your salvation and well-being to send out sent ones into your neighbor-hood and communities to proclaim and embody that the reign of God has come near.” I believe this so much that I felt it important to begin my

newsletter article with an excerpt from the sermon July 7. The full sermon is available for download on our website (www.firstpresbywichita.org) and on the information table (including in large-print format). As I have gotten to know you and be among you these past months as your Pastor/Head of Staff, I have been amazed at the many ways this church dem-onstrates Christ’s care among its members (through the Parish Nurse, Deacons, Stephen Ministers, Shepherds, and Prayer Chain) and in connecting deeply with God and one another (through honoring the vows made at baptisms through Chris-tian Education & Fellowship; worship at the Chapel, Sanctuary, Cowtown, and Camp; and simply by recreating at the Camp).

Our church also stands out for its care for the local community (through the Economy Cor-ner, Transportation Committee, and at Com-munity Breakfast on the 1st Saturday of the month) and greater community (through our mission to El Salvador and to our connec-tional church through sending our Youth to Ghost Ranch or Triennium and by our mem-bers’ involvement in Presbytery and Presbyte-rian Women). If you were to ask what sets First Church apart from the other churches that I have visited and served, it is the quality of your caring. You care because Christ ca-res. It is as one staff member said at staff meeting, “So, this is our identity?” I believe it is.

So, what would our congregational life look like if it were to build on what we do well and do it even better? I believe we would be more intentional about lifting up these minis-tries as part of a larger narrative about First Church and what we believe God is calling us to be and become in the next five years. One such way is to catalogue all the ways our members are sent out in the community as “Sent Ones” to make a difference in the com-munity. So, Anna has created a form for our members to fill out so we can lift up your min-istry and encourage others to join you or be-gin new ministries. This way we are letting our light shine so that others may see our good works and give glory to God (Matthew 5:14–16) and hopefully want to join our church. So, let’s spread the Word. With your help we can.

Grace and Peace,

(Continued from page 1)

Thank You Dear First Presby Family, We would like to express our sincere ap-

preciation for the generous outpouring of care and concern since the time of our loss. Words can never be enough to tell you how very much it means to us to have the kind of support we have received. Please know that this has allowed us to start the rebuild proc-ess. Thanks again for everything. God bless you all.

Youth Activities

Mission Dinner On Saturday, August 24 we will be welcom-

ing Kristin Van Osturan, a missionary from El Salvador. Youth from several area churches will join us for a meal, talk, slide show, and question-and-answer session from 5–8 p.m.

Youth Summer Trips The middle school youth took a trip to

Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Retreat Cen-ter in June. They participated in many activi-ties like rock climbing, archery, low ropes and mountain biking. Each day they had Bible studies and chapel time. After the stay at Highlands, they traveled to Denver for a day at Elitch Gardens followed by a fun dinner at Casa Bonita.

The senior high youth went to Ghost Ranch in July. They did lots of work at the ranch, in-cluding making adobe bricks, gardening, re-building a greenhouse and painting a church. In their free time, many of the youth took 1 to 2 hikes a day, taking in the beauty of their surroundings. They made new friends with a group from St. Louis and thoroughly enjoyed their time at Ghost Ranch. On the way home, they spent a day at the Great Sand Dunes Na-tional Park in Colorado.

August News from the Economy Corner

The Executive Board of the Corner would like to share with you one of the reasons we ask for volunteers. Yes—we need people to work. More importantly, our by-laws state that we may not open the store without three people in attendance. On Saturday, June 29, the Corner was forced to close at 1:00 because we did not have the three volunteers required to stay open. Due to the illness of sev-eral volunteers, we urgently need people who can work on Saturday af-ternoons. Please consider volunteer-ing even if you can only work once a month or on a random, as needed, basis. Our other needs are for men's items—white athletic socks, jeans and wallets. School will be starting very soon. This is a time that puts a huge strain on family budgets. Any children's items for school wear or use will be in demand. We appreciate your continuing support as we strive to help meet our community's needs through this urban ministry.

There’s a Stephen Minister Inside Each of Us

When we think of Stephen Ministry at First Presbyterian Church we think of the ongoing ministry in our church, the ministry of lay car-ing for those in our congregation experiencing a need or going through a crisis. The Stephen Ministers walking with these members went through 50 hours of training and attend con-tinuing education and support twice monthly throughout the year. But as I look around at our congregation I see a Stephen Minister in each and every one of you.

When someone is ill, or has just lost a loved one, or has an unexpected crisis in their lives I see you showing your caring for those persons. I see you hugging, listening, praying for, taking a meal to, calling on the phone and giving them the opportunity to share with you. As Christians we are all called to love one an-

other. And I see that in all of you. Stephen Ministry is planning a new training

class to begin in January. I know that sounds a long way off, but the Stephen Ministers of this congregation would like an opportunity to meet those of you who are interested in be-coming a Stephen Minister and talk to you about the ministry and about the gifts you might bring to the ministry. We all have God given gifts of caring, loving and listening and the Stephen Ministry training enhances all of those gifts.

Think about your gifts and whether you would like to be in the next Stephen Ministry class.

FPC 2nd Quarter Finance Results

We have arrived at the mid-year point with income exceeding our expenses by $27,934.89. It is typical for the early part of the year to show a surplus, as some people prepay their entire year's pledge. Contribution income received during the first six months was about 46.3% of the annual budget while total expenses were about 45.6% of the annual budget. Program expenses are cyclical, and many may occur late in the year. The approved budget projects a deficit of $74,633. Our undesignated reserves stand at $207,041. Thank you for your continued support.

The Discipleship Committee will be host-ing a church-wide study in October called “The Journey” with Adam Hamilton. The 5-week study will be done in small groups around the

church and city in members’ homes; individ-ual groups will be studying the same lesson each week with sermons to enhance the whole-church spiritual experience. If you would be willing to be a facilitator (lead the DVD and study questions) or host (open your home for a group), please see one of the Dis-cipleship Committee Elders: Janice Savute (942-9970; [email protected]), Terri Hawkins (519-1627; [email protected]), or David Miller (684-1080; [email protected]).

Wednesday Evenings Not Just for Children and Choir!

Beginning September 18, Wednesday eve-nings will have educational opportunities for adults. Pastor Brent will lead a short-term study on Celtic Spirituality. Pastor Amy will facilitate a short-term Disciple Class on the Psalms. For those of you who might be inter-ested in the Disciple Class but unable to make the year-long commitment, this 10-week class might be right for you. The Disciple Se-ries involves a daily individual study compo-nent; the class time includes discussion and a video to further explain the Bible. If you are interested in joining the Disciple Class on Psalms, please contact Amy Baumgartner ([email protected]) so she can order books.

BINGO! — Come and join your church family for dinner, laughter, and a fun game of chance with prizes on Friday, October 18. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo will start shortly after. Bring a friend! See page 10 for more information.

From the Parish Nurse

I’d like to share with you a story written anonymously about a desperate situation that probably had taken place somewhere close to us in the Midwest, about this time of year:

As a drought continued for what seemed an eternity, a small community of farmers was in a quandary as to what to do. Rain was impor-tant to keep their crops healthy and sustain the way of life of the townspeople.

As the problem became more acute, a lo-cal pastor called a prayer meeting to ask for rain. Many people arrived. The pastor greeted most of them as they filed in. As he walked to the front of the church to officially begin the meeting he noticed most people were chatting across the aisles and socializing with friends. When he reached the front his thoughts were on quieting the attendees and starting the meeting.

His eyes scanned the crowd as he asked for quiet. He noticed an eleven-year-old girl sitting quietly in the front row. Her face was beaming with excitement. Next to her, poised and ready for use, was a bright red umbrella. The little girl's beauty and innocence made the pastor smile as he realized how much faith she possessed. No one else in the congrega-tion had brought an umbrella.

All came to pray for rain, but the little girl had come expecting God to answer…

I liked this story because it made me think about how we wait on the Lord for something

to happen at our church that will strengthen our ministry and mission, and add substantial growth. It seems like we have been in a dry time, too, and we have continued to pray, hope, and wait for renewal and vibrancy. But, are we truly expecting God to answer? Do we trust that He has a great plan for FPC, and that each of us is invited to participate in His plan? Are we willing to eagerly wait, and in this time, serve actively, aggressively, and expectantly as Christ’s apostles? There are many opportuni-ties at FPC and within our community to serve and show God that we are preparing for the answer. May we busily prepare and know that God is with us, present within us, and with a sweet and simple faith, we can create wonder-ful good in the moment. And when the time comes to move elsewhere, God will show us the way and the time.

"For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then

when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me, if you seek me with all your heart."

(Jer. 29:11–13 NRSV)

Joan Aldrich

Expecting God to Answer

“A Name, a Name, What’s in a Name?” Shakespeare’s Juliet questioned the importance of names, but let’s face it, names help us connect to others. Nametags are given by the Discipleship Committee to new members as they join the church to help, and they encourage all members—newer and older—to don your nametag each week. This will not only be of benefit to you in putting names with faces, it will also help inte-grate our new members into the church. And think how much it will help Pastor Brent get to know all of us! If you are unable to find your nametag, stop by the office and tell them you'd like to have one. The cost is only $6.75—and if we all wear them, think how many people we will then be able to greet by name instead of just "Good Morning."

Paid Nursery Worker Needed

After two years of work in the nursery and watching our littlest ones, Leslie Swin-ney is resigning as our Sun-day paid nursery worker this month. We are seeking a new person to oversee the nursery on Sunday morn-ings. The time commitment is 9:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. during most of the year and 9:45–11:15 a.m. during summer. If you are inter-ested in applying or have further questions, please see Amy Baumgartner.

East Dining Room Display

August EDR Display: The Tools of an Illustrator I’ve been drawing in

the margins of my homework since kin-dergarten. Art was al-ways just a hobby for me, though. I enjoyed the mandatory art classes in elementary and middle school and won several contests for my artwork, but only took one art class in high school—my senior year. In college I majored in Biology. Then I got a roommate who was majoring in illustration. She told me I was wasting my talent and talked me into picking up an illus-tration minor. With the extra skills I picked up in those classes, I now make art with every-thing from ink on paper and paint on canvas to a computer & electronic pen tablet to hydrofluoric acid on glass. I especially enjoy painting with a palette knife & oil paint and making

Ukrainian Easter eggs, a process which in-volves alternating dipping an egg in dyes with drawing onto it with melted wax through a tiny funnel on a stick (a “kistka”). I can’t call myself a professional illustra-tor, because I don’t follow that occupation as a means of livelihood. Despite having formal training, I actually prefer the techni-cal definition of “amateur.” It’s from the French for “lover of.” I love being free to express myself visually. In addition to scen-ery, still life, and “fan art” (artwork created by fans of a work of fiction), I have illus-trated the despair felt in most of a lifetime battling clinical depression and the joy I find in my relationships with God and my friends and family.

Life is a Team Sport!

Isn’t it more fun to do things with others? The Children’s Commit-tee is looking for a few individuals to join a Teaching Team for morning Sunday school and Wednesday eve-nings. The time commit-ment is limited, the chil-dren are adorable, and you would be making a lasting impact on the life and faith of these chil-dren. For more informa-tion, see Elder Michelle Murray-Cline (794-1195 or (cell) 734-0243 ) or Amy Baumgartner.

Your Opportunity to Help Defeat ALS

First Presbyterian Church is joining with Carol Sandlin’s team in the Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Many of the congregation have been inspired and im-pacted by Carol and have asked what can be done to help and support Carol and her family on her journey. The Walk to Defeat ALS is one opportunity to provide support to Carol as well as all individuals affected with ALS. All funds raised through the walk support the ALS Asso-ciation, the only national non-profit health or-ganization dedicated solely to the fight against this catastrophic disease.

Members of FPC can support Carol and her team in several different ways:

1) Join Carol and her team at the walk on Sept. 21 (10:00 a.m. at the Waterfront).

2) Donate to any of the team members. 3) Support the effort through your prayers.

Just go to WalkToDefeatALS.org on your home computer. Search for the local event by using your zip code. Find Carol’s team—”Awesome Legwork for Sandlin.” Sign up as a walker and ask your friends and family to help support you in the walk (you can do this through the website or in person). Or contrib-ute to Carol or any other team member.

Thank you so much for your help and sup-port. The congregation of FPC is a “caring” congregation as Brent reminded us so well in his sermon on July 7. Continue this caring in your support of Carol and other members of the team.

If you have questions, please contact Patty Cole, 250-4577 or email [email protected].

Patty Cole

Let us remember to pray for our service men and women. Fall Festival Fun and Dinner After the heat of the summer has sub-

sided, kids will be back in school and the leaves will turn with the crisp coolness of fall. As you know, fall is a delightful time of the year where the harvest is in and folks like to gather in the glow of jack-o-lantern light and sip hot choco-late and cider. Mark your calen-dar and join your church family on Friday, October 18 at 5:30 p.m. for dinner, games, crafts, costume contest for youngsters, and Bingo for all ages!! So, make it a date and join us in the fun of great food, fellowship, and music of the fall sea-son. Questions? Call Michelle Murray-Cline at 794-1195.

Session Notes Items from the July 16,

2013 Session meeting: During this first meeting of

the new term, Rev. Dr. Brent Johnston introduced a new system of reporting committee activities to the Session, which will allow time for education and discernment.

Information about a new sound system for the Sanctu-ary was presented. The current sound system is no longer working properly and cannot be repaired.

There was continuing infor-mation and discussion about the need for updating/replacing the sign(s) in front of the church. The goal is to make the church more visible and inviting to people who have not attended FPC.

Finance Committee reports that the quarterly financial re-port to the congregation would be in the August Presby News.

The Children’s Committee shared the plans for the activi-ties for this fall, including pur-poses of worship of God, edu-cation and nurture and the warm connection with both the children and their parents.

Discipleship Committee will be promoting small groups and a new connectors program. Watch for articles regarding these programs.

The Clerk reports one new member, one adult Baptism, one infant Baptism. The active membership as of July 16, 2013, is 592.
