Pastor Sam’s Annual Report of 2014

Dear sisters and brothers of First Presbyterian Church,

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

We are midway through the seventh year of my ministry with you. Soon we approach the time when this will be my longest pastorate. Perhaps it is worth reviewing why this remains for me the most fascinating ministry imaginable.

I fear that my excitement will one day exceed your commitment in time, energy, and dollars. So far, however, I have found you consistently stretching me to my limits and at times running ahead of me to the point of exhaustion. Pastor Abel during his visit mentioned that he thought we were a far larger church, perhaps the largest in the presbytery. It occurred to me later that I should have said that it is the size of the heart and not the membership that determines the faithfulness of a congregation.

For my report this year, I bring three thoughts to your attention. First, pastoral care. A colleague of mine once noted that a pastor earns the right to be heard in the pulpit by the quality of his or her pastoral care. In our congregation, gifted laypersons provide much of the pastoral care of our congregation, augmented by pastors, including me. I believe that this caring is the bedrock of Christ’s presence in our midst. This ministry has been especially critical during a time of transition in our staff during the summer and fall. We can anticipate this caring ministry being heightened, broadened, and deepened by the addition of a parish nurse to our staff ranks.

Second, REALM is not a revolutionary but an evolutionary calling in our midst. It honors our unique congregational inclination to befriend and transform the world everywhere from Iowa City to Pakistan. Yet it also urges us to grow in our quest to pay attention to each others’ stories; to equip people to pursue right relationships of justice, mercy, and faith; and to help people find their divinely granted purpose in life through a variety of learning strategies. We are still expanding in our understanding of God’s calling to REALM, and the forthcoming planning process assisted by consultant Tim McCoy will invite us more deeply into our participation in God’s re-creation of heaven and earth into God’s image.

Third and finally, REALM has called me into new

relationships that I trust will fulfill God’s purpose through our congregation. Last Spring I joined several of our members in the Pride parade. This fall, through member Kory May, I became friends with Pastor Tony Smith of New Creation Church and their commitment to mission in the southern part of Iowa City. Furthermore, the presence of Holy Jerusalem Church in our congregation’s building offers new opportunities for mission. I am also engaged in processes that I trust will prove transformative in our presbytery.

Time does not allow for me share fully my joy at leading our youth mission trip with Vicki Mildenstein and Judy Terry and my pride in our youth. I am excited by the energy and enthusiasm of our new staff members, Jim Cochrane and Amanda Edwards, and the vision and energy of our continuing excellent staff persons. Have you visited Linda’s Labyrinth and envisioned the flowers that will blossom there soon? Have you volunteered to help our children in Christian education or signed up to fix a meal for our youth group? Are you willing to be a care buddy? Are you ready to learn about the stewardship of water, or how to be a spiritual mentor, or go ice skating with family and friends and share in brief prayer that shares faith gently with the wider world? Are you engaged actively and regularly in the joyful worship of God? These and many more activities are all wonderful opportunities to appreciate what God is doing at FPC. There are so many serving in so many ways in and out of church, it is hard for me not to boast: that is, boast in the Lord and what the Lord is doing through all of you.

I am humbled to be your pastor. With love and pride,

Sam

Music and Liturgical Arts Program—2014 Submitted by Darlene Bergman

Our arts teams and volunteers have brought their sacred offerings, faithfully rehearsed, and led the congregation, giving voice to our praise and proclamation of the Word. In addition to our weekly ministry, these are some highlights of the past year.

~Ministry~

~ Two Worship Service options continue to be offered at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. The later service is led by choirs, instrumental ensembles, and organ.

~Emily Guthe continued as our Music Ministries Intern. She works alongside staff, gaining hands-on experience with our handbell and Sanctuary Choir programs and supports the music ministry area in other ways as needed.

~February Youth Sunday service featuring Youth Choir, and Fall Musical, Moses and the Freedom Fanatics, presented by the Junior Choir.

~Special music throughout the year, including seasonal offerings, festival Sundays, hymn festivals, and Stanford Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in December.

~In September we began the 175th anniversary celebration of the organization of First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City, the 150th anniversary of our Old Brick home and the 40th anniversary of our Rochester Ave. home.

~Music and Arts ministries grieved the loss of some members due to death, illness or re-location and welcomed new volunteers into each group: Singing Choirs, Ringing Choirs, Instrumental Ensembles, Reader’s Theater, Banner Team, etc.

~Melanie Moll Sigafoose resigned as organist. We celebrated her ministry and bid her farewell with a reception during fellowship hour on Sunday, May 18.

~Pablo Gorin was hired as organist on August 1. Pablo is a doctoral student in organ performance at the University of Iowa.

~The Fauré Requiem was performed during worship on April 6. The work was a favorite of former choir member Hila Beth Cox, who died on January 18, 2013. In her memory, Hila Beth’s daughter Caren has underwritten the cost of this worship music. Hila Beth’s son and partner, Jeff and Bill Cox, also purchased a new conductor’s podium in her memory.

Voice and instrument in union through the ages spoke your praise. Plainsong, tuneful hymns, and anthems told your faithful, gracious ways.

Choir and orchestra and organ each a sacred offering brought, while, inspired by your own Spirit, poet and composer wrought.

Glory to God—The Presbyterian Hymnal, Hymn 689, stanza 3

~Mission to the Larger Church and Community~

~Junior Choir led worship at Ecumenical Towers followed by Gelato party.

~Annual Oaknoll worship service led by our Youth Choir. This was the 15th year running that we have led that service.

~Taylor Dengler, under supervision of Darlene Bergman, led music for summer VBS program.

~JuBELLation Handbell Concert and Tea held a festive afternoon of song on the Third Sunday of Advent.

~Hosted concerts by Chamber Singers of Iowa City, organ fundraiser for St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, local piano teachers, Knox College Choir, Early Music Ensemble Fathom

~Darlene Bergman finished her 4 year term as secretary on the Presbyterian Association of Musicians National Board. She served once again in a leadership role at the Mo-PAM Worship and Music Conference in Hunt, TX.

Lord, we bring our gift of music; touch our lips and fire our hearts. Teach our minds and train our senses; fit us for these sacred arts.

Then with skill and consecration we would serve you, Lord, And give all our powers to glorify you, and in serving fully live.

Glory to God—The Presbyterian Hymnal, Hymn 689, stanza 4

Christian Education and Youth Ministry—2014 Submitted by Jim Cochrane and Amanda Edwards

The nursery offers loving care and play opportunities for the church’s youngest participants. Dedicated staff play with and care for children birth–age 5 during the 8:00 and 10:30 services, during the Christian education hour at 9:15, and during other special services and events like New Member classes.

The FPSea! is a rotation-based Sunday school curriculum for all children in kindergarten through 5

th

grade. Children in attendance learn one story per month and travel to four different rooms over the course of the month: Cast-Your-Net Creations (Art), Bible Stories by the Sea (Games and activities), Fishy Films Theater (Movie), and Disciples Drama Co (Drama). This past year we have learned about Creation, David, Jonah, the Sower and many more classic biblical stories. The coming year will see more stories added to the curriculum in addition to the creation of a sub-committee to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and propose alterations to enhance the experience for both children and volunteers.

Youth Programs The youth program is designed to model God’s love and inclusivity, integrate Christ-centered principles, build positive relationships and community, foster awareness of self and others, and nurture faith in service to the world.

The Way, formerly grades 4–6, now 3–5, meets one Thursday night a month for fellowship and dinner. Fellowship, games, and activities highlight a fun theme and connect to scripture. Themes have included a Halloween Bash, Duct Tape Fest, Christmas Beach Party, Cereal Fest, and Chocolate Party.

The Rock, formerly grades 7–8, now grades 6–8, meets every Thursday night for dinner and fellowship. Dinner is first at 6:15. Fellowship follows in the Rock room until 7:30. Participants first share about their lives in the last week. Activities and discussion follow on a particular theme relevant to youth members’ lives and faith. Participants close in prayer. In September and October, participants got to know each other through a variety of games and activities. After solving a giant human body puzzle, they discussed role models, leadership, and what it means to be the body

Childhood Education

Through the provision of thoughtful, relevant, and spiritually fulfilling programming, First Presbyterian is able to

empower and equip its members to lead a Christian life after walking outside the doors of the physical building.

With program offerings like Sunday School, Thursday night youth programs, and Sunday morning and mid-week

adult education opportunities, the church is able to accomplish this task. As the congregation develops,

however, so do its needs. For that reason, the Equipping Ministry is tasked with finding new education

opportunities to meet the changing needs of the congregation.

of Christ. In November games, discussion, and activities highlighted Luke 5:1–11. Discussion focused on leading and following and how these roles play out at school, home, church, etc. In December, discussion shifted to the idea of waiting and explored the holy and secular aspects of Christmas. Youth are gaining confidence in praying together at the close of each fellowship time. They are learning different ways to open and close prayers, and voice what is on their hearts. Prayers are added to a prayer wall in the Rock room.

This coming summer, middle school youth have a unique opportunity to share God’s love with others while encountering differences in a supportive environment and growing in their understanding of self, their relationships with others, and their faith. The ROCK will participate in BAM, the Burnamwood Appalachia Ministry in Irvine, Kentucky, based out of Burnamwood Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center from July 6–10, 2015.

The Edge is First Presbyterian’s high-school age youth group, which meets on Thursday nights concurrently with The Rock. During the half hour dinner provided by volunteer families, groups and members of the church, the youth are able to socialize before going to the Youth Room for continued fellowship, until choir at 7:30. The Edge exists to provide a safe, welcoming place for youth to gather, have fun and share their life experiences with one another in a Christ-centered environment. This leads to games, team-building challenges and discussions about current events, what Christmas means to different people, the importance of communication with others and countless other topics that get brought up. There have also been events taking place on nights other than Thursdays. Events like the Lock-In and the White Elephant Christmas Party allow the youth to have fun and build relationships in an environment more casual than formal church discussions. In the coming year, expect to see ongoing discussions and many more evening activities. Additionally, The Edge will be travelling to New Orleans July 18–26 to help with the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. We will be working with a group called Operation Homecoming, which specializes in equipping youth with the knowledge and tools to physically put peoples’ lives back together. Through travel and service our youth group will develop deeper relationships with one another and with God.

Family and Adult Education

The Equipping ministry is charged with providing members of the congregation with the tools and knowledge necessary to live a Christian life in the world around us, whether we are five or fifty years old. For that reason, family and adult education are vital parts of Equipping’s work in the church. This past year saw enrichment opportunities like The Big Questions of Life Parts I & II, the continuation of The Wired Word, weekday Bible studies, Families & Faith, and countless others. As previously stated, however, Equipping works to find new opportunities to meet the changing needs of the congregation. In 2015 many new programs will be added as people’s needs are made known and as new informative and thought-provoking programs are made and discovered. As we look for new ways to strengthen our family ministry, Family Fellowship Sunday will provide time for families to come together, have fun and develop deeper relationships with one another, all in a Christ-centered environment. Additionally there will be the implementation of new Bible studies, both on Sunday mornings and mid-week. George Minot will lead a Sunday morning class to parallel FPC’s move to the Narrative Lectionary while also teaching a Monday night Bible study at The Java House downtown in order to reach the young adult population of Iowa City. First Presbyterian is

extremely blessed to have such an involved and intelligent congregation. As such, new classes and programs will be offered as members’ intellectual strengths and interests are made known.

The turning of a new year provides a time for both reflection and excitement. It is clear that the programs and opportunities for spiritual enrichment come into fruition due to the hard work of countless hard-working volunteers. Whether it has been providing dinner for youth on Thursday nights, volunteering in Sunday School or teaching an adult education class, these people see a chance to give back to the community that has given them so much and don’t hesitate to make sacrifices so that others may grow in mind, body and soul. To these volunteers we are extremely grateful. We are also thankful for the opportunity to serve the children, youth and families of First Presbyterian Church. The young people of FPC are striving in real ways to know and understand God, while adults look for new ways to examine their relationships, both with God and one another. No matter the age, we are all on a journey of faith, and we are humbled and honored to be a part of that process.

VBS 2014: The Adventures of Moses First Presbyterian’s Vacation Bible School for the summer of 2014 was called “The Adventures of Moses,” and it was a great success! Sixty-six children showed up every day from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. to play games, sing songs, and learn different stories about Moses. With the assistance of over 35 volunteers who donated time, money and resources all the children were able to have a fun and educational experience as well as provide 420 pounds of food and household supplies for the Crisis Center and 150 bags of trail mix for the Free Lunch Program. The 2015 VBS theme is “God’s Love in Action”, and will be taking place June 22-26. A big thank-you again to everyone who made this event possible, and hopefully this next year will be even better!

1. Session meetings begin with Pastor Sam lighting the Christ candle and inviting Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to be present during the meeting. An elder leads with prayer, scripture reading, and, occasionally, song. Each meeting ends with the sharing of joys and concerns and a prayer by an elder. This was a full year of meetings, special meetings and congregational meetings to consider the many issues involving the church. We were pleased to receive 36 new members plus two new confirmands this year. The session works to represent the church in doing God’s work and strives to make it Christ-centered.

2. The session held a retreat January 10 and 11, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Church to become familiar with the REALM concept for congregational spiritual formation, the organization of session, and the ministry of our church as a whole; and to discuss other vital issues. Congregational feedback on land acquisition and the proposed staff vision was reviewed. REALM was adopted as the methodology for future leadership of the congregation, the staff vision was approved, and session affirmed the need to try to acquire the land for future mission opportunities. In February, however, we learned that the owners had decided not to sell the property for the time being.

3. In light of congregational feedback, session approved the summer 2014 worship schedule. Sunday school classes were to be held from 9 a.m.–9:45 a.m. and worship service at 10 a.m. for the summer of 2014, between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

4. Darlene Bergman and Vicki Mildenstein gave a presentation at the February session meeting on creating a labyrinth and meditative garden on our land south of the parking lot. Session voted to approve the project.

5. Two confirmands were examined on April 16, with a short session meeting prior to that event. Session voted to receive into membership the two confirmands.

6. In May, session approved a Servanthood Ministry motion to hold, along with Presbyterian Women, a recognition reception and card shower for Mary Palmberg in Ryerson Fellowship Hall following

worship on Sunday, June 8. Donations to a fund in Mary’s honor would be accepted. It was suggested that other Free Lunch crews also be invited to attend.

7. Session approved adding an additional $4,000 to Justice Ministry in the 2014 budget (to be taken from operating funds). This, along with $4,000 from Endowment funds, would bring the Justice authorization for spending up to $8,000 for 2014. Session also approved giving Buildings and Grounds the go-ahead to pursue the possibility and costs of 1) adding a doorway to the columbarium from Coover Lounge, and 2) adding an elevator to the building.

8. Sam spoke briefly at the May meeting about his recent trip to the Holy Land and the connections to REALM he saw there.

9. In June we learned that co-director of Christian Education Beth Gier was resigning. Session voted to present a monetary as well as a tangible gift to Beth in recognition and thanks for her 14 years of service to FPC and to present gifts on Sunday, July 13, at a reception cohosted by Administration and Personnel and Equipping Ministries in collaboration with the Worship and Celebration Ministry.

10. Session endorsed the creation of a search committee, initiated by Administrative and Personnel Ministry, for the staff position of Interim Coordinator of Education Programs, to be created in collaboration with the REALM Planning and Equipping ministries, and voted to increase the Program Assistant position.

11. In our continued effort to make REALM our focus/framework in church action and structure, and in light of staff transitions, session requested the Administrative and Personnel Ministry, in collaboration with all other ministries, to recommend processes in order for the session, with congregational input, to create a future staff pattern that would support commitment to REALM.

12. During the summer, elder Ron Mildenstein met with

13. Session hosted a reception for Pastor Sam on August 24, 2014 in fellowship hall after worship service to join in a celebration of his achieving his PhD.

14. At the August meeting, session approved a Worship and Celebration ministry motion to continue two Sunday worship services with Sunday school in between. Early worship would have the format of a morning service of prayer and thanksgiving, usually with communion and a community prayer, and a call to service in the greater community of Iowa City and the world. The later service of worship would continue to be the larger celebration of God’s Word in our familiar format.

16. A motion was approved for the employment of Pablo Gorin as our new organist, and for Jim Cochrane as our interim director of Christian Education. Session also approved a motion to allow Administration and Personnel to make an offer of a quarter-time position for an interim youth assistant at $750 per month.

17. The Buildings and Grounds committee received a preliminary quote of $100,000 for an elevator. There was discussion about installing a lift instead, but most were in favor of an elevator. The door to the columbarium had not received a bid.

18. A motion from Endowment/Memorial was approved to change the Investment Guidelines, increasing the maximum allowable securities percentage from 55% to 70% of the portfolio, the rationale being this would allow the portfolio managers more flexibility in re-balancing the account, especially in periods of volatility.

19. Session also approved a motion from Endowment/Memorial authorizing a challenge for a $10,000 endowed fund at the Community Foundation of Johnson County for the church gardens/landscaping. A gift of $5,000 had been made by Bob Yager in memory of his wife, Phyllis, which the congregation would be challenged to match. The initiative was to begin after the first week in November, Stewardship Sunday, with special emphasis on the Endow Iowa Tax Credit program and, if Congress passes it, the IRA charitable rollover for persons 70½ or older.

20. A motion from Endowment/Memorial was approved to grant the FPC 175

th anniversary celebration

committee $2,000.

21. In September, the REALM Planning Ministry reported they were looking for a consultant to recommend to session to help plan and lead a process to connect church and community. The REALM group decided to subdivide temporarily into two groups, one to work on the consultation and one to assist Equipping Ministry.

22. Building and Grounds reported the estimated cost to repair the parking lot was $55,000. Discussion followed concerning whether to replace or repair. Our B&G elder said it needs basic replacement — to be dug up and redone and restriped. Discussion continued about bundling this in a campaign for an elevator, a door to the columbarium, and re-carpeting fellowship hall. Concern was expressed about the boiler. Elders present gave their OK to seek bids.

23. In October, Pastor Gary Burnett resigned as a parish associate, effective November 1, 2014. Administration and Personnel Committee voted to discontinue parish associate positions as of November 1, 2014 in light of changes in Presbyterian polity. Session voted thanks to Pastor Gary and Pastor Patte Henderson for their fine service rendered.

24. Margy Trimble, the new part-time fundraiser for the Friends of Pakistan Education Board (PEB), gave a presentation on the PEB and the Pasrur Christian Girls High School in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 5. Margy lived in Pakistan for five years and was a member of the PEB Executive Committee board there as well as a volunteer in the PEB schools.

25. Session authorized Administration and Personnel to explore the possibility of creating an up-to-full-time position of parish nurse or to return to session with options for providing consistent pastoral care to the congregation in support of Pastor Sam.

26. Session also authorized the use of the “Extended Table of the Lord” so that church officers can carry the church’s worship and the Lord’s Supper to at-home members during those weeks following the celebration of the Lord’s Supper by the gathered church as another pastoral care option, if necessary to implement.

27. In October, an exciting opportunity came our way. A motion was approved to make a covenant with the Holy Jerusalem Church, a Pentecostal African congregation. A motion was approved to allow Outreach Committee to coordinate and collaborate with other ministries to create a plan of welcoming to the Holy Jerusalem Church. This will be an

exciting opportunity for both First Presbyterian Church and the Holy Jerusalem Church.

28. In November, a motion from the Memorial and Endowment Committee to fund three grant proposals from 2014 funds was approved. The proposals were: $2,500 for manse roof repairs for the Naulakha Presbyterian Church in Lahore, Pakistan; $2,500 for funding towards the construction of a replacement facility for the Presbyterian Education Board headquarters destroyed in late summer monsoons; and $6,000 for the music ministry to fund the music intern in 2015.

29. Session authorized Administration and Personnel to move forward with hiring a parish nurse at a level that will meet FPC needs.

30. We were informed that Camp Wyoming was now out of debt, thanks to payoff from presbytery reserves.

31. The Holy Jerusalem Church began meeting in FPC on Saturday, Nov 22, 2014 in the youth room. Sunday afternoon services were planned. Holy Jerusalem attendance is usually around 75.

32. On November 23, a group of elders met with elders-elect and deacons-elect for examination, and the candidates were approved to assume office in January 2015.

33. In December, Carol Ulch, representing the REALM Planning Ministry, spoke on the goal of how to assist with the creation of a congregational plan to be implemented over the next few years that touches on all areas of church life and is based on the REALM principles that are already approved by session and being implemented in some ministries. Pastor Sam mentioned his awareness that some have had bad experiences with consultants, and he has had his share. Yet he also has had very positive experiences, and he believes our congregation is in a period where a positive consultation can be helpful. This consultant will be called to empower the collection and organization of community (regional mostly) and congregational information; assist with congregational conversations for the sake of priority setting; and assist lay leaders with the creation of a written plan that entails:

1. addressing high priority community needs for which the church can provide unique leadership in the empowerment of people;

2. missions and ministries the congregation can create or help to create to respond positively to those needs;

(Clerk’s report continued from page 11)

3. specifying human, building and financial resources that will need to be collected (from us, other congregations, or the broader community) to support the mission and ministries identified; and

4. laying out a time line and assigned responsibilities for implementation.

34. Maggie Mowery gave her professional input concerning Tim McCoy, the recommended consultant who was unable to attend the meeting due to illness. Session approved the concept of creating a 3–5 year strategic long-range plan, and approved a motion exploring a contract with Tim McCoy not to exceed total cost of $16,000 with details to be presented to session for approval at the January 2015 meeting.

35. Three motions from Administration and Personnel were presented. Session approved a motion setting the Pastor’s salary and benefits for the 2015 budget year to a level such that the overall cost to the church is increased by 2%. Session also approved an increase in salary of all other staff positions (including newly hired and interim positions) by 2% for the 2015 budget year, and

36. Approved naming Jim Cochrane as Director of CE and Amanda Edwards as Youth Ministry Assistant, making them regular employees of FPC.

37. Judy Whitford and Richard Van Rheeden were approved as FPC commissioners to Presbytery.

38. Pastor Sam offered gifts and words of gratitude for our departing elders, Meg Ketterer, Chad Greimann, Dan Katalinich, Ron Mildenstein, Judy Whitford, and Tom Martin.

39. At a special session meeting called on December 21, 2014, a motion was approved to make a gift to the PEB in Pakistan from the Burianek Trust of $100,000 to rebuild the administration building in Lahore, Pakistan. Session also approved a gift to the newly established Lucille Burianek Fund in the FPC endowment from the Burianek Trust of $53,000.

Administration and Personnel Ministry

2014 Annual Report Submitted by Dan Thedens, Moderator

Council members in 2014: Dan Thedens (moderator), Jim Claypool, Kevin Keith, Nancy Ross, Perry Ross (to February), Pastor Sam Massey (ex-officio).

The Administration and Personnel Committee oversees matters concerning church staff and their activities along with office and technology resources that support them in their mission.

2014 was a year of considerable change and transition for our staffing patterns. With the Session approval in January of the staff vision outlined by the committee, Personnel was granted two endowment requests to begin to implement the plan. The first grant funded staff training activities while the second funded a 50% Parish Nurse position for a one-year term. The committee worked towards developing a position description for the Parish Nurse in the spring. This position was not filled due to other pressing matters, but is anticipated for 2015.

In February, our organist Melanie Sigafoose announced she would be leaving in May to take a position at her home church. A reception to thank her for her four years of service was held May 18. A search committee was formed to find a replacement, resulting in the hiring of Pablo Gorin as organist in July with a starting date of August 1.

In June, Beth Gier announced that she would step away from her position as Director of Christian Education effective July 3 after 14 years of dedicated service. A reception was held on July 13 to thank her for her generous and faithful service. In July, Director of Christian Education George Minot began a leave of absence through the remainder of 2014 to tend to family concerns. As a result, Program Assistant Tammy Schroeder moved from 3/4 to full-time effort.

A search process was immediately undertaken with members of Personnel, Equipping, and REALM Planning ministries to recruit interim leadership in Christian Education. In August, Jim Cochrane, a recent Luther College graduate and Presbyterian Clearwater Forest Senior High, Director was hired as full-time Interim Director of Christian Education. Amanda Edwards joined the team in September as a 1/4 time Interim Assistant for Youth Programs. In December, Personnel and Session approved making both regular employees with Amanda’s title changing to Youth Ministry Assistant. George Minot will return in 2015 as Adult Education Instructor.

On November 1, the Parish Associate program for pastoral support drew to a close. As this role is no longer recognized in the denomination, it was decided to look towards new models to provide this support. Pastor Gary Burnett and Pastor Patte Henderson were thanked for their caring service in this role at a reception on November 16.

Administration and technology was mostly in maintenance mode for the year. Circle Computer Resources (CCR) remains our information technology support provider. There were no major equipment upgrades over the year. The three-year contract with them will expire in 2015, so we will evaluate their cost and service at that time. We will also continue to keep tabs on our server, networking, and other resources and make upgrades where needed.

We anticipate 2015 will be a year of discernment as we work out how best to align our staffing patterns with the REALM framework and vision of the church. Once again, all members of the Committee are grateful for the service, dedication, and support among all of our staff throughout the year, both departing and new. We give thanks for their blessings and talents, and we look forward to their continued service and growth in 2015 as we discern God’s call for our ministries.

Equipping Ministry Submitted by Ann Burton, Moderator

Members of the Equipping Ministry were Ann Burton, Amy Fletcher, Linda Morris, Anita Burnett, Ed Pearcy, Tina Stolz, Gina Pottorff, Amanda Edwards, Jim Cochrane and Tammy Schroeder.

The Risen Christ instructed the disciples to go into the entire world, to share the good news, to invite faith, and to teach. The Equipping Ministry (formerly Christian Education Council) helps all of us fulfill this calling. Its purpose is to empower church participants and interested persons in the wider community to discover and practice God’s purpose for their lives. They learn to become advocates of justice, practitioners of mercy and persons able to articulate faith in Jesus Christ. This ministry uses all means available, including technol-ogy, to create spiritual formation experiences that identify, honor, and enhance persons’ gifts, skills and sense of calling. The ministry develops, directs and grows ministries focused on children, youth, adults of all ages, and persons in intergenerational gatherings. This ministry is charged to reach out to university, semi-nary, and other regional institutions and draw on them to create new opportunities for persons to reflect on the encounter between the world and the realm of God.

2014 was certainly a year of change for Equipping Ministry. Not only did we acquire a new name, but we also said goodbye to our two long-time Christian Education leaders. With the departure of Beth Gier in June and George Minot’s leave of absence in the fall, FPC hired Jim Cochrane in August as Interim Director of Christian Education and soon afterward added Amanda Edwards as Interim Assistant for Youth Programs. We are very thankful for their leadership. Equipping Ministry is also very grateful for all who helped us out this past year, especially during the transition period. Special thanks go to all teachers, adult education lead-ers, youth leaders/helpers, youth dinner providers, childcare workers and volunteers, staff members (especially Tammy Schroeder), dedicated EM committee members, and REALM Planning folks.

Equipping Ministry is looking forward to an exciting new year! With new leadership come innovative ideas, fresh perspective, and renewed energy. And with God’s help, FPC’s education programs will continue to grow and evolve, providing more opportunities to learn about and serve in God’s world.

FPC Men’s Group—2014 Annual Report Submitted by John Barr

The First Church men’s spiritual formation group, consisting of core group of 6–8 individuals, met at 7–8 a.m. on most Wednesdays during the winter, spring and fall of this year for devotional readings, discussion of contemporary societal and religious issues, fellowship, and a light breakfast. Related activities this year included providing leadership for FPC participation in the pre-Christmas Gifts for Parents program, a funding donation to the Project Holiday food program and the Crisis Center, and preparing and serving evening meals on two occasions for the First Church youth group.

Justice Committee - 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Lara Marsh, Chair

Members of the Justice Committee are Lara Marsh, Becky Ross, Perry Ross, Mary Ann Pedde, Martha Schut, Wayne Patton, Sherry Lohman, and Brian Kleis. We invite all to join us.

Our mission: to inform and empower people to take action for peace and justice, locally, nationally and internationally.

Guided by our mission “to inform and empower,” scripture which says, “What does the Lord require of you? To seek justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:38), and Jesus’ commandment to “love one another,” we seek to provide a place where all people of all opinions can become further educated, engage in civil discourse, and then choose to take action based on their inspirations.

Our work in 2014 included:

Working with other members of the Servanthood Ministry (Mission and Outreach) to more effectively accomplish work in which we were mutually involved/impacted.

Continuing Operation Backpack, involving delivery of 55 bags of food to hungry children at our partner elementary school (Lucas) every week during the school year. In total, we delivered over 2,150 bags of food, gave out extra “goodies” on two occasions thanks to donations from volunteers, and involved over 50 volunteers from inside and outside the church.

Publication of several newsletter articles- including the use of plastic bags and their impact on the earth, information on the Israeli/Palestine conflict, water resources, poverty, hunger, and human trafficking.

Project “Give Up Plastic Bags for Lent.” Many cloth bags were created by FPC volunteers, and Becky Ross led an effort to recruit people to pledge not to use plastic

bags but instead use a free cloth bag during Lent. Roughly 40 people signed the pledge and, we hope, continued to use cloth bags.

Showing the movie, “Chasing Ice” during the Adult Education hour with discussion following on two Sundays. This movie showed dramatic imagery of earth’s receding glaciers.

Discussing poverty and income inequality during one Sunday School time with high school youth.

Organizing a community human trafficking awareness conference. Speakers were:

○ Cathy O’Keeffe and Maggie Tinsman – Braking Traffik

○ Kevin Kinney – Johnson County Law Enforcement

○ Brian Endrizal – FBI

○ Dave Lorenzen – Iowa DOT/Truckers Against Trafficking

Servanthood Ministry

Submitted by John Barr, Convener

The resurrected Christ sent his disciples into the entire world to share God’s good news with every creature. Accordingly, the Servanthood Ministry (SM) empowers congregational members and groups to share the realm of God in words and deeds, the goal being the promotion of justice, mercy, and faith in the world, through the work of its three committees, Justice, Mission and Outreach.

SM met monthly, August through December, for prayer, fellowship and sharing of information prior to the individual meetings of its committees. Major accomplishments of SM included: participation in planning for use of First Church facilities by the Holy Jerusalem Church for worship and choir practice; facilitating Endowment Committee funding of $2,500 towards replacement of the monsoon-damaged Presbyterian Education Board administrative office in Lahore, Pakistan; and initial planning for a sister church relationship with Naulakha Presbyterian Church, Lahore, Pakistan, including the visit by Pastor Majid Abel on January 16, 2015.

Separate reports for the Justice, Mission, and Outreach committees follow, below.

○ Joy Fopma – Wings of Refuge

○ Teresa Downing-Matibag – Network Against Human Trafficking

Display booths included Wings of Refuge, The Rescue Run, Truckers Against Trafficking, and DVIP.

The event was held on a Thursday evening at Hotel Vetro. It was well publicized and at least 100 people attended. Many eyes were opened to the reality that people, mainly children, are being sold and resold across our country, including right here in Iowa. Efforts continue to keep people engaged and aware.

(Justice Comm. continued from page 15) Sponsoring a bulletin board on the Coralville Strip from December 22 – February 22 to advertise the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline. This was in conjunction with a billboard campaign sponsored by Braking Traffik.

Donating funds to Wings of Refuge, a restoration safe-house for victims of human trafficking.

Asking for a budget for 2015 to further our work.

Mission Committee – 2014 Annual Report Submitted by John Barr, Chair

Mission members John Barr, Faryle Nothwehr, Nancy Stensvaag, and Judy Terry worked diligently to be good stewards of FPC mission activities and funds. Based on the Session budget allocation for the Mission Committee, support secured from the Endowment Committee, and targeted member / friend donations (e.g., Table to Table van fundraising), our disbursements were 46% to local mission, 28% to global mission, and 26% to General Assembly and Presbytery mission endeavors.

The Mission Committee (MC) strives to identify the best ways to use congregational resources to assist victims of injustice, natural disasters, and circumstances beyond human control locally, nationally and globally. By doing so, it helps the congregation witness to reconciliation with the poorest of the poor, a characteristic of the realm of God. Our resources include, but are not limited to, financial, building, and the time / talents of human volunteers. The MC researches requests for funding, interprets mission projects to the congregation, invites the community into the church’s mission projects, arranges for and supports mission trips, solicits funds through special offerings over and above the mission budget, and discerns how the church building might be used to provide for mission. The Friends of Pasrur (FOP) is a subcommittee of the MC.

Based on the generous support and involvement of members and friends, MC has completed a very successful year of mission work. Budgeted funds (your pledges), special offerings (your donations) and your volunteer work have had important mission impact at the following levels:

Global Mission: -CROP Walk -Presbyterian Giving Catalog -Kids Against Hunger -Frontier Fellowship (Busse Family, Central Asia) -Pasrur School, Pakistan -Presbyterian Education Board (headquarters replacement fund) (scholarships; science lab -Presbyterian Disaster Relief equipment; Margy Trimble visit) -Support for Sam & Will Massey, Mosaic of Peace -Naulakha Presbyterian Church (Holy Land study trip; Massey & Sue Dravis presentations (manse roof repair fund) at FPC) General Assembly and Presbytery: -Shared, unified & directed mission -Camp Wyoming -Theological Education Fund -Special offerings: One Great Hour, Pentecost, Peacemaking & Christmas Joy Local Mission: -Consultation of Religious Communities -Local Emergency Mission Fund -Crisis Center -Lucas School book program (Food Bank & Project Holiday) -NAMI of Johnson County -Domestic Violence Intervention Program -Salvation Army Toy Drive -Four Oaks -Shelter House -Free Lunch Program -Table to Table van replacement -Gifts for Parents -To Gather Together -Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity -United Action for Youth (UAY) -Johnson County Family Treatment Court -Winter clothing distribution (Incentive Program) -1105 Project

REALM Planning Ministry – 2014 Annual Report

The REALM Planning Ministry was created in early 2014 to lead the development of REALM at FPC by:

Assisting all FPC Groups to move to REALM thinking in a simple, orderly, and efficient way;

Creating a basic organizational design to facilitate communication among the groups;

Assisting groups to design their organization simply. Thereby, maximizing efforts of participants and using money to have the greatest REALM impact.

REALM Planning focused on three major projects during 2014.

Fostering communication within and between other ministries to focus FPC activities on reaching out to the underserved among us in the areas of justice, mercy and faith. Our efforts were concentrated in working in the areas of Servanthood and Equipping.

Supporting the Equipping Ministry by developing Adult Education activities during the summer and fall, 2014. New groups and methods focusing around talking about our faith stories were piloted successfully.

Developing a design for and securing approval and funding for a new FPC Strategic Plan.

Development of the Plan started in January 2015 with completion anticipated by July, 2015.

Designing and developing a survey to update the Membership database of FPC. Data collection is anticipated in March, 2015.

Member were Judy Whitford, Perry Ross, Maggie Mowery, Pastor Sam Massey, Carol Ulch, Convener

Stewardship Committee — 2014 Annual Report

Submitted by Tom Martin, Moderator

The GOAL for stewardship in 2014 was: To create an increased enthusiasm for stewardship by sharing stories of current programs and by the sharing the “what-if” potential impacts of increased programs if more resources were available. Increased knowledge may result in increased pledge commitments during the fall of 2014.

This goal was the result of discussions that determined people have a right to know how their gifts are being used and what other ideas/plans would be implemented if resources were available. Resources are not restricted to money; time, talents and volunteer hours are also much need resources.

These messages were delivered at worship services during what we called “seconds for stewardship.” Each of the REALM areas was given 120 seconds during a Sunday morning service to spend 60 seconds reporting what they have been doing and 60 seconds explaining what they would do with additional resources. The presentations were recapped and expanded in that particular Sunday’s bulletin and also in the monthly newsletter.

The financial results of this approach to stewardship were very good and are reflected in the Finance Committee report.

We plan to continue Seconds for Stewardship throughout the year in order to keep the congregation informed as to the progress of current programs and exciting ideas that might need resources in order to develop.

Buildings and Grounds Committee — 2014 Annual Report

Submitted by Ron Mildenstein

Current active committee members: Vern Dengler, Sue Farran, Randy Howe, Wanda Martin, Ben Nicholson, Lee Tippe, Bob Youngquist, Millie Youngquist, Ron Mildenstein

We completed no major projects this past year due in part to the fact that the 2013–2014 winter was so cold that we exceeded out budget estimates for the cost of gas to heat the building.

The committee did accept oversight responsibility for the memorial garden subcommittee. This group has made a good start at developing the grounds on the southeast corner of the church grounds. The wooded area was cleared and perennial flowers planted on the hillside, trees have been planted and the labyrinth laid out.

We replaced the arbor vitae on the east edge of the grounds to fulfill our obligation to the city for the easement granted FPC for the lower parking lot.

The committee is currently working on obtaining estimates for the following projects deemed to be in need of attention:

Parking lot repair and restriping

Fellowship hall re-carpeting

Elevator

Boiler system maintenance and potential replacement

Doorway directly to the columbarium area

Sanctuary seating upgrade or replacement

Running water and electric to the garage and memorial garden area

Finance Committee — 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Connie Richardson

The Finance Committee oversees the financial operations of First Presbyterian Church of Iowa City. The committee meets regularly to discuss both the income and expenses of the church, as well as its overall financial position. The committee also addresses any impending issues which may become a challenge. Each month a presentation is made to the church, through Session, of the status of budgetary integrity. The reports include income and expenses for operations, as well as reports of restricted funds. A budget summary is published in each issue of First’s Family.

The FPC congregation, in additional to giving for the operating budget, gives generously to special appeals for mission and to honor the memory of our members who have been called to Glory. The congregation continues to honor financial commitments at a rate that makes budgeting and planning very reliable. This year 97.4% of pledges were paid by the end of the year. This percentage may increase somewhat as we receive gifts from members who, for various reasons, had to delay their gifts to the church. The committee encourages members to consider using direct deposit (ACH) as a vehicle for honoring their pledges. This evens the monthly cash flow for the church and simplifies budgeting for members. It can be begun or stopped easily.

For the sixth consecutive year, we have balanced the budget. The congregation and each ministry area should feel a sense of satisfaction as income has again exceeded expenses. Of the funds available from excess income over expenses, portions are directed by Session for technology, capital, and equipment reserves, as well as other one-time expenses. We hold a small cash flow reserve.

Endowment and Memorial— 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Connie Richardson

The Endowment and Memorial Committee oversees the FPC permanent endowment and coordinates with families to appropriately use memorial gifts made to the church. Committee members in 2014 were Jackie Harb, Kevin Keith, Tom Martin, Ken Miller, Connie Richardson, Jan Wicks, Millie Youngquist, and Robert Youngquist. Ex-officio members were Pastor Sam Massey and Larry Bruner, Church Treasurer.

The committee is pleased to report additions to the endowment and to FPC Funds at the Community Foundation of Johnson County totaling just under $64,000 for the following:

Establishment of the Phyllis and Robert Yager Garden Fund at First Presbyterian Church, which is held at the Community Foundation of Johnson County. Bob Yager is matching gifts to that fund, up to $5,000.

An addition to the FPC Friends Fund at the Community Foundation of Johnson County by John and Sally Staley.

Establishment of The Dick and Marilyn Brown Columbarium Fund from memorial gifts and gifts from Dick and Marilyn’s children.

Establishment of the Lucille Burianek Fund from distributions from the Lucille Burianek Trust. This trust is administered by U.S. Bank and Bob Woodburn.

An addition to the Dick and Marilyn Brown Columbarium Fund in memory of Ken and Ellen Donelson.

For information about making a current or future gift to the endowment or to the Community Foundation of Johnson County for FPC’s benefit (Endow Iowa tax credits are available), including establishing a permanent named fund, please contact any committee member. Inquiries are confidential.

Resources are not limted to money; time, talents and volunteer hours are also much need recourses.

These messages were delivered at worship services during what we called seconds for stewardship. Each of the REALM areas was given 2 minutes during a Sunday morning service to spend 1 minute reporting

Celebrating 175 Years! Submitted by Mary Ellen Stamp

Members of the committee are Darlene Bergman, Vern Dengler, Jake and Toni DeRyke, Ann Grosscup, Dwight Miller, Maggie Mowery, Bill Oglesby, John Raffensperger, Mary Ellen Stamp, Ben Urick, and Bob and Millie Youngquist.

Our committee was formed to celebrate and honor the rich 175-year history of our church in Iowa City. It was decided to make it a yearlong celebration with several special celebrations. A full year of “Historical Segments” from the church’s history began appearing in the weekly service bulletin on September 21. This will continue through our final event on September 13,

2015. Our inaugural event Sept. 14 celebrated the

senior pastors that have served our church from its inception. Pictures of all the pastors were dedicated and hung in the “Hall of Pastors.” Following the worship service a potluck was held in Ryerson Fellowship Hall. A church trivia contest was played, with the winning table awarded anniversary mugs. Our second special celebration was an old-fashioned Christmas Pageant held on December 21 in Ryerson Fellowship Hall. We shared pastries and fellowship as we portrayed the birth of Jesus Christ in the same manner as was done years ago. In honor of the 175 years of our church, coffee mugs and pewter ornaments are available which we are selling at cost for $5.00. The remaining special celebrations are scheduled for March 8, May 31, and September 13, 2015.

Membership of the Worship and Celebration Ministry for 2014 included Elders Ron Mildenstein, Dan Katalanich, Ken Fisher, and Meg Ketterer; congregational members Rebecca Stockman, Carol Kirsch, Steve Schomberg, Ann Dengler, Sherry Lohman, and Valerie Soemadi; and FPC staff member Darlene Bergman. Our meetings were held approximately once a month and were led by Meg Ketterer, with an agenda put forward by Darlene Bergman.

Following the initiative of our REALM program, in 2014 “Worship Council” was renamed to embrace the missions of worship, music, fellowship, and celebration at First Presbyterian Church. Among our significant achievements this past year was the establishment of our early service of worship, held at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays from Labor Day to Memorial Day, after 3 years of

experiment with a morning-service format. In August, Session approved this service as a regular part of our worship calendar, and we continue to seek ways to expand the outreach of this worship option.

Under the leadership of Steve Schomberg, our service of Communion now includes 1 or 2 “lead servers” to manage set-up and clean-up on each occasion. Hearing health concerns among members of the congregation, we have modified our Communion procedures, especially for service by intinction, an offering much valued by many in our worship family.

Valerie Soemadi and Carol Kirsch have organized the weekly Coffee Fellowship to follow our worship services, helped by church-member volunteers. Fellowship events also included receptions in honor of new members at Easter

Vigil, to celebrate Pastor Sam’s PhD graduation, to welcome new members of the FPC staff in September, and to thank our out-going Parish Associates Patte Henderson and Gary Burnett.

In the fall of 2014, we began a year of celebration for the church’s 175 years in Iowa City, for 150 years since the building of Old Brick downtown, and for 40 years in our current location on Rochester Avenue. An enthusiatic group of volunteers began to meet in the summer and reported to Worship/Celebration their plans for the upcoming year. The inaugural event was held in September with the presentation and installation of the portraits of all the FPC pastors since the beginning of our history in Iowa City. The weekly bulletin and monthly church newsletter include historical notes for our continued celebration.

what they have been doing and 1 minutes explaining what they would do with additional resources. The presentations were recapped and expanded in that particular Sunday’s bulletin and also in the monthly newsletter.

The financial results of this approach to stewardship were very good and are reflected in the Finance Committee report.

We plan to continue Seconds for Stewardship throughout the year to keep the congregation informed through out the progress of current programs and exciting ideas that might need resources in order to develop.

Columbarium — 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Tammy Schroeder

The First Presbyterian Church Columbarium provides a final resting place for members of the church family and with its garden, serves as a visible representation of the great cloud of Christian witnesses. It symbolizes the unity of the Christian community, and it serves as a peaceful gathering place for families and friends.

Physically, the Columbarium is a round structure of Dakota mahogany granite with 96 niches capable of interring the ashes of 192 individuals.

The Church encourages advance planning and seeks to make it possible for members to complete all arrangements in advance for interment and worship services.

We currently have 60 available niches, and donations to the Columbarium fund are gratefully accepted. Funds are used for the perpetual care of the columbarium and its surrounding garden.

Please call the church office for a planning appointment with Tammy Schroeder.

The members of the Board of Deacons during 2014 were: Rhonda Barr, Anita Burnett, David Carlson, Tim Fehr, Jeremy Fletcher, Louise Gisolfi, Liz Hall, Mary Linn, Pauline Miller, Sue

Olson, Paul Schaeffer, Steve Smith, Sarah Swisher, Maeleen Thorius, Deb Torrens-Semler, Sue Van Duyn-Phipps, Ben Urick, and Glenn Van Roekel.

Newly elected Deacons participated in officer training in November 2013. At the December 2013 meeting, new Deacons were welcomed and the Board said thank you to the Deacons whose terms had ended. Officers for 2014 were elected at the December 2013 meeting as follows:

Moderator: Jeremy Fletcher Secretary/Treasurer: Sue Olson Shepherds: Pauline Miller and Susan Van Duyn- Phipps Caring Connection: Liz Hall and Louise Gisolfi Support Teams: Rhonda Barr Hospital Visitation: Maeleen Thorius, Ben Urick, Dave Carlson, Anita Burnett, Rhonda Barr, Steve Smith, and Sarah Swisher Prayer Chain: Jeremy Fletcher Cards: Mary Linn and Susan Van Duyn-Phipps Transportation: Tim Fehr, Glen Van Roekel, and Ben Urick

The Board of Deacons held ten regular meetings in 2014, meeting the second Tuesday of every month, except June and July. The Deacons continued to coordinate many of the caring ministries offered by

First Presbyterian Church. The regular activities of the board were shared among the Deacon Pairs and seven committees.

Deacon Pairs — Pairs of Deacons were assigned to a segment of the congregation, sorted alphabetically by last name. The Deacon Pair served as a point of contact for members and friends of FPC. The goal was to help create a more involved and caring church community. Deacon Pairs took note of the caring needs among members and then either worked directly with the member to fill that need or put them in contact with the caring ministry that was best able to provide assistance.

The Meet Your Deacons event was held on February 23. This was an opportunity for the Deacons Pairs to introduce themselves to members of the congregation, provide information about the services offered by the Deacons, and enable members to enjoy fellowship with each other.

Support Team (Coordinator: Rhonda Barr) – During the 10:30 Sunday worship service, the Support Team collected prayer requests from the congregation and passed them to the pastor. The Support Team also collected and replenished pew pads after the service. A Deacon stood with the pastor at the end of the service to assist with pastoral care requests. This year, the Support Team took on the additional task of assisting those with physical needs to find seats for the 10:30 Sunday worship service. They have also taken a more active role in welcoming visitors to First Presbyterian Church.

Transportation and Valet (Coordinator: Tim Fehr) — The transportation team provided rides for people to the 10:30 Sunday worship service. People were able to request a ride through the church office transportation line. This service was typically used by two to four people each week. Some weeks, as many as six people received rides to church. This committee also coordinated the valet service provided at the 10:30 Sunday worship service, Easter Vigil, and Christmas Eve service. Deacons parked and retrieved vehicles for members who had difficulty walking across the parking lot, especially during inclement weather. The valet service was used by one to five people each week. In addition, the Deacons were available to open the doors or provide assistance to those who could use some help in making their way from the edge of the sidewalk to the church.

Cards (Coordinator: Mary Linn) – Greeting cards were sent to members of the FPC community to observe momentous birthdays and anniversaries, for congratulations on newborns, to send “get well” wishes, and extend sympathy. Approximately 200 cards sent in 2014.

Prayer Chain (Coordinator: Jeremy Fletcher) – The prayer chain is an electronic mailing list used to distribute joys and concerns of people who have asked them to be sent to prayer list members. The prayer chain includes approximately 130 members and friends of FPC. Throughout most of 2014, prayer requests could be sent to [email protected] and automatically distributed to the members of the prayer chain. Requests also originated through e-mail to the prayer chain coordinator, FPC website, notifying the church office, by completing a prayer request card at Sunday worship, or speaking directly to the pastor. Because the prayer chain could be accessed through the FPC website, people outside of the FPC community were able to submit prayer requests as well. On occasion, some spam e-mails were submitted through the prayer chain, but they did not cause any issues. In December, public access to submit prayer requests was removed from the FPC website in an effort to prevent inappropriate requests being sent to the congregation. A new system was put in place that is open to all members of the congregation and requires the member to login in order to submit a prayer request. In 2014, approximately 250 prayer requests were sent out using the electronic mailing list.

Hospital Visitation (Maeleen Thorius, Ben Urick, Dave Carlson, Anita Burnett, Rhonda Barr, Steve Smith, and Sarah Swisher) – Members of the hospital visitation team visited people in the local hospitals after the pastor’s initial visit. Requests to

visit those hospitalized originated at the church office or from the pastor. The Deacon Handbook was updated to provide more guidance to those making visits and help make the visit more effective for the patient.

Caring Connection (Coordinators: Liz Hall and Louise Gisolfi) – The Caring Connection coordinated short-term care for members who were home from the hospital, ill or just needed help. Examples of services provided included meals, overnight companionship, moving, outdoor plantings and local transportation. In 2014, the Caring Connection served 10 families, providing 48 meals and 15 rides, as well as helping with laundry and packing.

The Caring Connection also coordinated the Casseroles-To-Go service, which kept main dish casseroles in the church freezer. The casseroles could then be used to provide a meal to anyone who would welcome a prepared meal. The Deacons kept track of the inventory and made arrangements with volunteers when more meals were needed. Anyone was able provide these meals when there was need.

Shepherds (Coordinators: Pauline Miller and Sue Van Duyn-Phipps) – Shepherds coordinated the visitation of members and friends who live in local care centers or find it difficult to leave their homes. The purpose of these visits was to help these “at-home” individuals remain connected to the FPC community. Easter and Christmas flowers were delivered to these members by the Shepherds and other FPC volunteers. More than 60 plants were delivered at Easter and Christmas.

The Deacons provided other services throughout the year. Care packages were assembled and sent to college students and military service members in April and November. The care packages were sent near college final exams to help relieve stress and provide a connection to FPC. Seven care packages were sent in April and three were sent in November. The Deacons also helped decorate the sanctuary by providing spring flowers at Easter, poinsettias during Advent, and hanging decorations during Advent.

The Board of Deacons looks forward to continuing to serve the FPC community in 2015. They will be working to strengthen relationships with members of the FPC community. This will help members feel a stronger sense of connection with the church and enable the Deacons to better ascertain members’ needs. Toward this end, the Deacon Pairs will be reorganized into Deacon Neighborhoods. Instead of being segmented alphabetically by last name as in years past, the congregation will be organized geographically. This will enable the Deacons and members to get to know the people in their neighborhoods and work together to provide assistance to those who need a helping hand.

CHM Team Activities for 2014:

1. Monthly blood pressure screenings were held on the 2nd

Sunday of each month between the two worship services [9:30 – 10:30]. Toni DeRyke has continued to coordinate this valuable service.

2. Emergency and first aid maintenance: The automated defibrillator upkeep and supply readiness is an on-going task. Thanks to Tammy Schroeder for her assistance.

3. CPR training was provided to all FPC staff members, with Jan Wicks facilitating this service.

4. Health Ministries Education: We offered information on health and healing topics through the following programs:

5. Bulletin board display – Sun and heat exposure, flu prevention, hand washing and preventing falls, as well as the importance of adult vaccinations. Also urging congregation members and others to donate to the blood drives.

6. Ben Urich and Katie Owen provide quarterly medication review, answer questions related to medications and health, and check blood pressures. Both are registered pharmacists. We appreciate their expertise very much.

7. A weekly Beginning Yoga class continues to be taught by Helen Chadima.

8. Two blood drives through Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Centers were held in March and September.

9. A flu clinic was offered on Sunday, September 28, 2014 through the Visiting Nurse Association. The flu shot, flu mist, and pneumonia vaccinations were available to FPC members and the public.

10. The Health Ministry Team continues to advocate for a Parish Nurse position.

Plans for 2015:

1. Sponsor two blood drives [Mississippi Valley] in March and September.

2. On-going health information, B/P checks monthly, and a fall flu clinic.

3. Continue medication review for members.

4. Continue to provide weekly yoga classes for interested participants.

5. Provide CPR and AED training for FPC staff members as needed.

6. Plan for continued health education opportunities at FPC.

7. The team recommended to the Deacons some minor changes in how Communion elements are presented when Communion is served by intinction. Now servers will tear off larger pieces of bread [small pieces can occasionally fall into the cup] and hand them to members for dipping into the cup. For Communion service in the pews, recyclable plastic cups are being used instead of glass cups. These precautions are being taken especially during the flu season.

8. A stationary hand sanitizer was placed at the inside front entrance of the church.

9. Team recommends budget allocations for the placement of automatic door openers at front entry and the construction of an elevator between the education building and the sanctuary.

Needles, Hooks & Yarn

Submitted by Tammy Schroeder

Several FPC members and friends from the Iowa City community meet on Saturday mornings to knit and crochet. Some friends aren’t able to make our Saturday meeting but help this ministry by knitting at home and donating their work for distribution through our network of charities. We focus mainly on local organizations. A sample of where our work has gone is below:

165 items were distributed to Home Ties, Salvation Army and Lucas School 43 Preemie Hats to UIHC 83 items to Special Olympics

We’ve continued the prayer shawl ministry to comfort friends and members of our congregation. During 2014, 11 shawls and lap robes were delivered, with several more ready to go as needed. These items not only provide warmth but are also a tangible example of God’s presence in our lives. If you know of someone in need of comfort or who is celebrating a joyous occasion, such as a birth, please let us know; send requests to Tammy Schroeder.

We have given out 142 shawls since we started this ministry in 2007.

Although we engage in mission activities, many also work on personal projects, as well. Our needle backgrounds are diverse … a few in the group are first timers, others are learning again, while others have knitted and crocheted for years. Come share the fun and fellowship of Needles, Hooks, & Yarn on Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Contact Carol Macon or Tammy Schroeder for more information.

Friends of Pasrur — 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Nancy Weber, Chair

Friends of Pasrur (FOP) is a small group of dedicated women and men that promotes support for Pasrur Christian Girls High School, run by the Presbyterian Education Board in Pasrur, Pakistan. This school educates about 600 Christian and Muslim students in grades one through ten. (There are hundreds on the waiting list.) For the past eight years our church members and some friends have sponsored 100 Christian girls, allowing them to attend school and to live in the dormitory First Presbyterian Church financed. A sponsorship, costing $450, covers tuition, uniforms, books, and room and board. We have also agreed to sponsor (room, board and tuition) several young women who have completed their grade 10 studies at the Pasrur school and have passed the requisite examinations and are now pursing further education preparing them for teaching jobs or continuing their education at the college level. Each scholarship (tuition, room and board, etc.) for their postgraduate education is $750. Education will open doors for all these young women who otherwise would have little hope to break free from poverty and oppression.

During each year of our involvement we can note continuing progress for the school. This year, thanks to generous donations from supporters, we were able to continue construction of four additional classrooms on the second floor of the four-classroom addition, which was completed in December 2012. These additional classrooms make it possible for students to complete grades 11 and 12 at the Pasrur school.

A major problem for the Pasrur school is having consistent electrical power during the day. Load shedding throughout Pakistan means that electricity is cut periodically throughout the day to save energy and reduce pollution. In an effort to provide consistent power during the school day, PEB schools are making an effort to install solar panels. With contributions made by the Lind family in memory of Kelley Lind, solar panels were installed in the Pasrur school. This will help provide continual electricity during the school day.

In early October, Margy Trimble, the new part-time fundraiser for the Friends of the Presbyterian Education Board in Pakistan (PEB), visited with us and gave a presentation on the PEB and the Pasrur Christian Girls High School in Fellowship Hall. Margy lived in Pakistan for five years and was a member of the PEB Executive Committee board there as well as a volunteer in PEB schools.

The PEB administrative offices were dangerously damaged by floods in the fall of 2014. At a special session meeting called on December 21, 2014, a motion was approved to make a gift to the PEB in Pakistan from the Burianek Trust of $100,000 to help rebuild the new administration and multipurpose building in Lahore, Pakistan. Great news for all PEB schools, including our Pasrur school.

Below is our annual financial report:

Contributions sent to the Presbyterian Girls School in Pasrur, Pakistan in 2014:

As of December 31, 2014, the Friends of Pasrur have reached our goal to be able to provide scholarships for 100 students in K–10th and for students who qualify to continue their higher secondary education for the school year April 2015 through March 2016.

Nancy Weber served as chair of the Friends of Pasrur this year; Nancy Stensvaag is the financial secretary; and Jane Cranston is vice chair. Other members of FOP are Nancy Ross, Nancy Gardner, Becky Crutchfield, Becky Ross, Liz Hall, John Barr, Katie Lind, Ariel Soemadi, Mary Linn, Sue Dallam, Sharon and Bill Oglesby, Ed Cranston, Janice Baumback, Leann Graves, Susan Massey, Anita Burnett and Janice Wilson. Presbyterian Women — 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Toni DeRyke

Presbyterian Women continues to be a vital part of the life of First Presbyterian Church. All women are encouraged to participate in as many ways as they are able, to grow spiritually, and enjoy the fellowship of other women. Involvement with the Presbytery includes our financial pledge, which is used for mission projects of the presbytery and the larger denomination. We participate in the Birthday Offering, Least Coin offering, and Thank Offering through the PWCT, with donations from each circle.

Our church was the host for the Presbytery Spring Workshop held on Saturday, April 26. Many of our members were involved in the preparing for and facilitating the meeting. The men of our church served a luncheon of sloppy joe sandwiches, potato salad, carrots and celery, with cup cakes for dessert for the 60 participants. The decorations followed the Starfish theme. The speaker was Tommy Henderson, who is involved with “Operation Starfish Haiti,” a mission working with setting up a school for children in Haiti. This school will be the focus of a fundraiser to be held here in February to provide support for this Presbytery PWCT mission giving project. The “Little Creations” gifts which each member church donated were presented to Home Ties, a local child care agency which is housed in the Mennonite Church. Their mission is to provide childcare for those unable to afford care.

Several members attended the Presbytery Fall Gathering held at Mt. Pleasant First Presbyterian Church. The speaker, Sue Dravis, had been on the same tour to Palestine which Pastor Sam and Will Massey had attended, and she gave us additional perspective about the problems in that area of the world. We were also inspired by Rev. Randi Peterson speaking about “God’s Tinker Toys.”

Our individual circles continue to meet regularly, and we encourage all women to become involved. Reports from the circles are prepared by each group. The varied times for meeting allow women to be involved in various ways. Eve Circle meets on the first Tuesday of the month during the school year. Martha Circle meets on the third Wednesday of the spring and fall months. The Rags to Stitches group meets sporadically as projects are completed. The Needles, Hooks and Yarn group meets on Saturday mornings throughout the year. The Horizons Bible Study meets on 9 consecutive Tuesday afternoons in the early fall, this year studying “Reconciling Paul,” a study of the Book of Second Corinthians with Anita Burnett as leader.

The PW Coordinating Team has sponsored several events during the year.

The “Kids Against Hunger” packing event in January drew people of all ages to participate in preparing the food packets, with 20,000 meals being packaged. Proceeds from last year’s Cookie Walk were designated toward the expenses of the food supplies, and was supplemented by funds from Mission Council. In February a brunch for women of various ages was held to help those who are new to the church to become acquainted with some of the more seasoned women. “Getting to Know You” was the theme.

A luncheon to raise money for scholarships to Camp Wyoming for our young people was held after church on February 9. We were able to provide scholarships for 10 from our church this summer.

The Book and Bake Sale, held on April 5, was ably chaired by Sharon Raffensperger, working with the staff and volunteers from Four Oaks. This has been a successful project for the past 13 years, with the proceeds

divided evenly between the two groups.

A Mother-Daughter Luncheon on May 3 featured a puppet show by Eulenspiegel Puppets, and delightful table decorations with a puppet theme. This catered luncheon, served by men and boys from the church, appealed to all ages. It was especially fun to see the younger guests enthralled by the show. Musical entertainment was provided by Maggie Mowery and Laura and Mia Thedens. The award for Honorary Life Membership in PW was given to Anita Burnett, a longtime PW leader and member of many groups at First Presbyterian.

Church Women United met at our church on September 28, and many hands working together again made hosting the group a good experience. Speaker was Deb Minot, relating her experiences as judge and her work with victims of abuse. Donations of various items were given to DVIP.

The 28th Cookie Walk was held on

December 13. Expanding the crafts and handmade items for the Mini Bazaar was exciting to see, and changing the cookie prices to allow higher prices for the gourmet cookies helped make the event more profitable. Sally Rickey continues to chair the Cookie Walk; Nancy Ross and Jan Wicks chair the Mini Bazaar; and Liz Hall was in charge of publicity. Many thanks to all the

people of the church who were involved in so many ways. Proceeds will again be used to fund the “Kids Against Hunger” packing project in January 2015.

The Coordinating Team was able to expand some of our mission giving this year, and provided an additional $2,500 to the 1105 Project to assist in getting the building ready for use in January. The other local mission projects which we donated towards were Habitat for Humanity ($200 plus donating the quilt for their silent auction), Free Lunch Program

($1,000 to be used to purchase needed grocery items when our church is host), Operation Backpack ($200 for incidental gifts to kids), DVIP ($500 for ongoing needs) and a fund for Pastor Sam’s “Discretionary Fund” to be used as he sees special needs. We also supported the Christmas Gifts for Parents and continue to pay a pledge to Church Women United as well as our pledge to PWCT.

Funeral receptions are coordinated by Estyl Breazeale and Mary Linn. The ladies have provided a luncheon for ten funerals this year as a service to

the families. Many different people have assisted in preparing and serving these luncheons.

So many women are involved in the various aspects of the life of the church, and it is not possible to cover all of them. Many of the “behind the scenes” tasks do not get formally recognized, but they are an important part of our lives. My gratitude is sent to all those who have helped make my 6 years as moderator of Presbyterian Women the positive experience it has been.

Martha Circle — 2014 Annual Report Submitted by Jane Skinner

Our leaders were Anita Burnett, moderator; Jane Skinner, secretary; Helen Sheets, treasurer; Carol Ulch, Women’s Council representative.

Martha Circle met in Ryerson Hall at 10:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of the months March through May and September through November. We have 24 active and honorary members with an average attendance of 12.

Our programs covered a series of interesting topics, ranging from learning about one of the recipient groups of our nationwide Birthday Offering and a brief and interesting overview of our new hymnal, “Glory to God,” to an informative talk on the First Church REALM ministry and the Parish Nurse program. We also explored through the theme—Many Parts, One Body—how we may use the many parts of our bodies to reach out to others and serve God and saw an engaging video portraying Martha’s reactions to Jesus’ visit to her and Mary—how Martha—and we—are challenged to choose the most important way to welcome Jesus into our homes and our lives.

Several of our members attended the nine-week Horizon Bible Study, “Reconciling Paul,” led by Anita Burnett, and several enjoyed the women’s retreat in the fall.

Retreat held at the Prairewoods Franciscan Retreat in Hiawatha on October 3-4.

The November program was given by Sally Rickey. Circle members were instructed how to make

Christmas cards. It was most enjoyable.

December’s program was a Salad Supper with Liz Hall, Gloria Zajcek, and Gloria’s daughter as co-hostesses. A fun fellowship was had by all. December 13 was the Cookie Walk & Bazaar and

was successful and enjoyed by all.

The next Church PW & UPW Women’s World Wide Meeting will be held in Minneapolis, MN on June 17–21, 2015. All women of the church are invited to attend Eve Circle for meaningful worship, service projects, and fellowship.
