PASTOR'S CORNER

In July 2011, my daughter Noelle decided to be a foster parent to a rescue Labrador-mix dog named Cupcake. Whenever Noelle walked Cupcake, she made sure Cupcake wore her vest that said, “Adopt Me.” Noelle would also pass out cards to anyone who might be interested. But there were no takers.

In November that same year, Noelle decided to formally adopt Cupcake; however, six weeks later, it was sadly discovered that Cupcake had cancer. Noelle loved Cupcake nonetheless and spent much of her time and money to help her get better. But on August 16th this year, Cupcake succumbed to cancer, leaving a big hole in Noelle’s heart.

The following day Pastor David Stoker’s dog of 14 years, Sadie, also died. Many, many tears were shed that day.

Whether someone owns a dog for 14 months or 14 years, the loss of a pet is tremendous and traumatic. The worst thing you can say to a grieving owner is, “Well, it’s just a dog.” But it’s a lot more than just a dog. Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family.

Most pets display incredible, unconditional love, especially dogs. Dogs always love. Dogs always forgive. Dogs always affirm. And they are always very happy to see you.

How does First Prez respond to pets needing prayer or to owners grieving the loss of their pets?

First, we offer you personal grief counseling. FPC member Marianne Schulz has been trained and certified in

helping people walk through the grief of losing their pet. If you or your friends need someone trained to help them walk through such grief, send Marianne an e-mail: [email protected].

Second, we do pray for members’ pets. (Alas, I’m allergic to cats so I cannot pray for them in person). A woman brought her seeing eye dog that had a serious illness. Her dog had saved her life numerous times and it literally guided her in life. So we prayed for her dog.

Third (and this is the big question many people may have), do our pets go to heaven after they die? I confess I have not done extensive research on this. My friend John Ortberg allegedly said in his pulpit, “No question that dogs go to heaven! But as for cats…” I am sure he was kidding.

If you want to do your own research on this you might want to start with the book Heaven by former pastor, adjunct seminary professor and now executive director of Eternal Perspective Ministries Randy Alcorn. In his book, Randy devotes 22 pages on trying to answer questions like will animals inhabit the New Earth, and will they, including our pets, live again? Randy believes so.

Know that there is help and hope at First Prez for those who have lost their pets. We care about your loss, and we will support you as you go through your time of grief.

CHURCH NEWS

It’s September! And in our church calendar that means it’s time to give aloha through Give Aloha.

“Huh?” you might ask.

Give Aloha  is Foodland Supermarket’s gifts-matching program that happens every year in September. It encourages all of us to make a donation at a Foodland checkout stand of up to $249 (per person) to our favorite non-profit organization (hint: it’s First Prez). Then Foodland and the Western Union Foundation match a portion of each donation.

We highly encourage you to participate in this because directing a portion of your donation (from your normal giving of tithes and offerings) will increase the amount of your gift after Foodland has matched it.

We're not asking you to give an additional $249 to your normal giving; what we do ask is that you direct that amount through Foodland for the month of September.

Here’s how it works:

1) Go to a Foodland cashier and show your Maika’i card. (No Maikai card? Simply ask the cashier for one.)

2) Tell the cashier that you’d like to make a donation to First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu through Give Aloha, using the code 77299. Cash, checks, and charge cards accepted.

3) All donations are tax-deductible, so keep your receipt for tax purposes since this will be your only record for your donation.

4) Donations to First Prez must be made between September 1 and 30, 2012.

Giving With AlohaSeptember is Give Aloha month! Dont' forget to visit Foodland to double your gift!

If each household in our church were to take part in Give Aloha, we can raise close to $200,000 even before Foodland adds to it! All donations will go to the general fund in support of all ministry, mission, and operational areas of the church.

Thank you for partnering with us on this. Let’s Give Aloha!

Seekers & Joiners (New Members) Class Saturday, Sept. 15, 9 am-3 pm, Makai Room

Our next new members’ class is a one-day session to be held on Saturday, September 15th from 9:00am-3:00pm. Pastors Dan Chun and David Stoker will lead the classes and will share from their hearts the vision of First Prez, our core values, the teachings of the Presbyterian church, the miracle of our move to Ko‘olau, and other helpful information. It’s also a great way to meet others who attend FPC-Honolulu! If you’d like to join First Prez, transfer your membership, or just learn more about us, this class is for you! To sign up, please e-mail [email protected] by September 10th. We’ll need your name, phone number, e-mail and childcare request (if applicable). Please note that there is no obligation to join the church after attending the class.

CHURCH NEWS

Did You Know?HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN THE CHURCH?

The 2012 annual operational budget is $3.471 million. This is what it costs for our broad range of ministries, staff salaries, maintenance of facilities (including a portion of overall utilities and custodial costs), and contracted services (such as insurance and bookkeeping).

WHAT IS AN OPERATING DEFICIT?If the amount we spend on ministry

operations (the annual operational budget) exceeds the amount we have received in tithes and offerings, we have a deficit. If the amount received is greater than what we have spent, there is no operating deficit.

LIFE MINISTRIES

RAA! (Retired Active Adults)

“Raise the Bar!”Fall is upon us — a new church

year!  Raise that bar on your Bible skills and your growing relationship with Christ.   The Life Ministries Team has been working all summer with Olympic-like vision to provide a plethora of Life Training classes to help you do it.  Grab a brochure and reach for the sky!

Nan Fancher’s going to lead a Bible discussion on how the church got started (not FPC but the whole shebang).   Contact Nan first, though, to see if there’s room on the bus. Alan Stockton will fascinate with those fascinating (Look ‘em up!) parables in Luke 15. What’s “sticky faith?” David Keuning is excited about revealing what it is and about helping you guide your kids to it. Paradigm shift! —The Millards have cranked up a whole new class scheme. It’s called “LifeShare” and it’ll blow you away. Ada Lum is back!  This time she takes on the whole world, and the whole world is invited to be there. Barb Manni with Dana Apo kick off a new class that might become an FPC ministry — “Single and Parenting.” Julie Carter and the Copelands (Vic and Sissi) are getting all set to launch a fresh new start in respectively, “Facing Cancer with Hope”, “Divorce Care”, and “GriefShare”. “What does Nicky say?” Pastor Sim is going to lead a dialogue/discussion class for Alpha grads on how to answer that question from folks who can’t attend Alpha. Classes start September 16 (some are delayed, check brochure).

Lots of opportunity. Jump at it!

Ice Cream Sing-Along

What's better than sundaes on a Sunday? It's our annual Ice Cream Sing-Along with special guest, Ms. Lillie, who will grace us with her incredible repertoire.

Lillie Knauls was born in Arkansas and is one of seven children. Church was the first place she went to and cannot remember ever not loving the Lord. She considers herself a “musicianary” and goes wherever the doors are opened—rest homes, prisons, Christian women’s clubs, and major Christian TV programs.

The Ice Cream Sing-Along happens on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1-2 pm in the Fellowship Hall. You will have plenty of time to have a light lunch in our famous Ko‘olau Kitchen while having fellowship with family and friends. But save room for some cool Ice Cream Sundaes, with all the toppings for dessert. Best of all, the whole event is free!

Invite your friends and family to join in on the fun and fellowship. See you there!

WOMEN'S MINISTRY

WOMEN'S NEWS

Bev Heyberger’s StoryWhen asked to consider being a mentor

in the Woman-to-Woman Mentoring Program, I had a lot of reservations.  I thought, what could I offer a young girl that she hasn’t already heard before?  A close friend said to me, “Bev, you mentor people almost every day - at work, at play wherever you are.  You just don’t realize it.”  At the first meeting I met seven or eight fantastic young ladies who were seeking a mentor to help with their daily struggles of having a deployed husband and raising children alone, with their daily walk with God, or the daily difficulties of fighting off attacks by Satan.  The prayer team matched me with Ingrid Friedberg, a beautiful young lady who was finishing her master’s program at UH.  Ingrid taught me the struggles of “get that degree”, staying up all night writing papers, meeting deadlines, roommate difficulties, dealing with a close friend’s suicide, and daily prayers to God asking for guidance through it all.   I hope I inspired Ingrid as much as she inspired me during our talks and lunches together.  And YES, Ingrid graduated!

Ingrid Friedberg’s  StoryWhen I first heard about the women’s

mentoring program, I was half asleep during an 11:11 church service, sleep deprived because I was in the final semester of my master’s program. I didn’t have a lot of time, but I knew I had to seize this opportunity. Being new to First Prez, I wanted to continue to build friendships at church.  I hoped and prayed that I would be paired with a great role model -- a great Christian woman. I didn’t know what to

A Shared Mentoring Experience

Plants for the Bazaarby Donna Matichuk

The Ko‘olau Market once again will be a favorite feature of the upcoming Annual Bazaar on Nov. 3. It may be several months away, but now is not too soon to start herb plants, or divide plants to donate for the sale according to Sandi Chun, who has chaired the plant and produce boutique for several years.

All kinds of plants sell well, but lauae ferns and orchids are always popular. Sandi also urges people to keep in mind what produce they may have to donate at that time.

Chun predicts that tropical jams, jellies, and chutneys will be snapped up by eager shoppers this year, as well as small boxes of specialty sea salts and herbal teas. “These are perfect for small gifts at Christmas,” she said.

Mixed PlateSaturday, Sept. 29

Enjoy a day with other women of all ages in a fun assortment of workshops on cooking, crafts, exercise, interesting topics, and much more.  Watch for details in the Sunday bulletin coming soon!

Parenting ClassEvery other Sunday, 9:30 am, Honey’s Backroom

The parenting group is at it again with new curriculum that is sure to make you think, and equip you as a parent. You owe it to yourself to make the time—put

your kid(s) in childcare and join a sort-of-support group of parents and potential friends. Email [email protected] for more info. Please come!

expect and I was afraid that maybe I just wasn’t a good enough Christian to be allowed to participate in the program. Despite my feelings of uncertainty, I took a leap of faith.

Beverly was just the mentor (and so much more) that I had hoped and prayed for! She leads by example in all that she does, through her volunteering in and outside of church, and through the kindness she always shows others. There isn’t a place Beverly goes without making those around her smile and feel good!

She inspired me to want to be a better person and to know Jesus Christ more than ever. She shared a number of ways God has been her beacon of light, seeing her through all kinds of situations. Her faith is clearly about being courageous enough to walk with Jesus through life’s trials and joyful moments. Beverly’s wisdom helped me to keep my head above water as the deadlines kept rolling. She has been nothing but supportive and encouraging of me in my journey not only with my master’s degree but also in my journey with the Master Himself. I am truly blessed that I got paired with Beverly.

There were so many prayer warriors praying for our time together. Talk about a way to feel included in a church community! I highly recommend the Woman-To-Woman Mentoring Program because whether you know it or not, there is another woman at First Prez who is longing to walk with you and pray for you in your faith journey. So why not take a leap of faith and see what God has to offer you?

Welcome to Fall and the start of September. Our kick-off for the start of Sunday school and new classes for learning God’s word is underway. Sign up and tune in!

Rebecca Rinehart-Caneda has a new job. She is now working for Catholic Charities Hawaii located in our old church sanctuary in Makiki. She is the Program Director for Intensive Clinical Services, providing mental health services to children/adolescents in home, school, and community. Rebecca’s office is located upstairs in the old sanctuary and she says “kinda in the same spot where I used to sit." She also continues to help out in Children’s Ministries with our kids with special needs.

Kyle Van Houtan was in Washington DC this summer to accept an award from President Obama. The recognition is the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE), which he received for his work on how climate influences sea turtle populations. Kyle says, “This is not only a very humbling honor, but also a time to repurpose and rededicate myself to work even harder and tackle bigger and bolder topics than before.” Kyle is a NOAA Fisheries research ecologist and has taken sea turtle science into new territory with research showing that changes in the ocean environment and climate have profound effects on sea turtle populations.

Nina, 15-year old daughter of Andy and Laurie Oishi, recently returned from an all-expense-paid one-week educational tour to Berlin as an EF (Education First) 2012 Global Citizen Scholar, along with 19 other high schoolers from around the U.S. The scholarship’s goal is to promote global awareness and to unite students around the world. Nina, an 11th-grader at Punahou, was the only student chosen from Hawaii. As part of the EF 2012 Global Citizen Scholarship, the recipients do a

research project about Berlin that relates to their identity and global citizenship. Since she plays the piano and cello, Nina chose a research project about the music of Berlin. Yeah, Nina!

Erika Engle, who writes THEBUZZ for the Honolulu Star Advertiser, wrote that “HASR Wine Co. will be expanding and opening a Bistro which will feature Mama’Nita Scones LLC made by our own Anita Rhee along with her upscale baked goods.” Yum!

The First Prez Choir will be joining the Oahu Civic Orchestra this November for a musical extravaganza. This free concert will be in our own sanctuary. Stay tuned for more information.

Here’s an update on Joe and Barbara Grimes' work on "Da Befo Jesus Book" (The Old Testament): "We have just finished translating Joshua into Hawaii Pidgin'. Psalms, Judges, 2 Samuel will be finished soon, and we have just begun Zechariah." Please check out the translations at: www.pidginbible.org. In September Joe hopes to go to Mexico again to help the seven Huichol mother-tongue translators work on the translation of the Old Testament into their language. Please continue to pray for these wonderful people and the job God has given them to share His word with the world. Take the opportunity to talk to them after a Sunday service. They are so very interesting.

After watching the Olympics this summer and seeing the dedication the athletes devote to their sport, I understand what Paul means in “1 Corinthians 9:25: Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” Let us continue to strive for the eternal prize and for our Love of the Eternal God! Amen. PRAYERLINES

Made to PraisePart 4, by Patti Marshall

We continue with Day 24 of adoration praying, which places all else we pray in proper perspective. This form of prayer is foundational to all other kinds of prayer, for it brings us into immediate and direct contact with our Lord, Master, and Creator.

24. A Faithful God: “I praise You because Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies (Ps. 36:5), and great is Your faithfulness” Lam. 3:23.

25. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords: “All honor and praise be to the You, my God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light” 1 Tim. 6:15.

26. God, My Liberator: “I will praise You because You are my help and my deliverer” Ps. 70:5.

27. The Lifter of My Head: “Father, God, I praise You because You are a shield around me, O Lord. You bestow glory on me and lift up my head when I am weary or despised” Ps. 3:3.

28. God of Light: “I praise You, Lord, because You are my light and my salvation (Ps. 27:1), and because You know what lies in darkness and light dwells with You” Dan. 2:22.

29. God of Joy: “I give You praise, O Lord, because You have granted me eternal blessings and made me glad with the joy of Your presence” Ps. 21:6.

30. The God Who Answers Prayer: “I praise and honor You, Father, because You are a God who loves to answer prayer and who begins to answer even as I pray” Is. 65:24.

31. The God of All the Earth: “I praise and adore You, Lord, as the Holy One of Israel, my Redeemer, the God of all the earth” Is. 54:5.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

The summer is over and Ko‘olau Kids is gearing up for its school year program. Please join me in praying for the upcoming Ko‘olau Kids Team as they plant seeds and pray for the keiki within our care. These caregivers, storytellers, small group leaders, coordinators, special needs providers, and registrars know the value of being intentional in showing our keiki God’s BIG Story and how each of us are part of it.

We also see the value of extending what we do at FPC into our homes because we recognize that the home is the greatest influence in raising our children to be spiritual champions. Every week our parents are given tools that can help them to reinforce what we do on Sunday’s into their home. The last thing that we want is to add one more thing to a crazy family schedule. But Ko‘olau Kids is committed to helping families to see the importance of making God a priority in our homes. Each Sunday our keiki go home with a tool to help them to connect to God during the week during the normal routines of their life such as dinner talks, bed time stories, and car ride discussions. Here are the AMAZING people who are devoted to serving the keiki and families of FPC during this school year:

4TH, 5TH & 6TH GRADE OVERNIGHTER

Overnighter Recapby Lauren McCartha

Ko‘olau Kids Overnighter was a blast! We played outrageous contests like “Balloon Cup Blowout”, “Toilet Paper Mummy Wrapping”, and the ultimate “Food Challenge Relay.” It induced belly-aching laughter throughout the night!

Elementary Students were split into two competitive teams “The Poko-Pirates” and the “Sky Warriors” to challenge each other in an intense competition of “Glow-stick Darkness Hunt” and an epic “Cool Whip Noodle-Jousting” battle! Then the Jr. High leaders Matt Selvey and Peter Selvey lead them in a Volleyball game in the youth area.

Not only were the fun and games abounding, but the students also were invited into the Jr. High area where Nick Love and Peter Selvey introduced them to the Jr. High program that our 6th graders will be promoting to this September. Uncle Peter talked about the journey of Joshua and the Israelites who stepped out in faith to cross the River Jordan and enter the Promise Land and how they placed memorial stones to remember their journey.

As we all know, change can be tough. Moving to Jr. High takes courage and bravery. It is important for us to remember where God has brought us, and to trust where He is taking us. Our 6th graders were encouraged to have faith that God is with them in their move to Jr. High! It was a special moment for everyone involved.

Special thanks to Carolyn Thibault who headed up this special event as the Upper Elementary Coordinator. Ko‘olau Kids is so thankful to all of our special leaders and volunteers to who make amazing events like this one possible! If interested in joining our team and learning more about our program, please contact [email protected]. We have the most fun and would love to add to our team!
