In 2012 the Bishop of Aberdeen Hugh
Gilbert OSB pointed to the connection
between Advent and silence. He called on Catholics in his diocese to “create silence”
in churches and parishes as “there can be
no real relationship with God and there
can be no real meeting with God” without
silence. Churches had become too noisy
and needed to become places of silence.
The Benedictine bishop writes: “And here
comes a difficult question: What has happened to silence in our churches?
Many people ask this question today. In many churches, there is talking
and noise at the very beginning of Mass, and when the Mass has ended
noise starts again immediately. In order to prepare for Mass, we need a
quiet mind and to “focus ourselves and put aside distractions”. It is better for people to speak to one another after Mass in the church’s foyer or front
of the church. “In the church itself so far as possible, silence should
prevail. Silence should be the norm before and after Mass, and at other
times as well”. In a few weeks, we are going to sing “Silent Night” a well-
known carol that with its beautiful melody carries a profound message of
silence in which God’s Word became flesh.
This Word is very delicate and gentle, so the challenge of Advent is to be
quieter, more attentive, less full of my own words (or anyone else’s) so that
the Word of God, the newborn baby may find a welcome in my heart and mind. The Season of Advent should be characterised by a profound
silence. Our Lord commands us to “be watchful,” and we know that the
best watchmen are those who observe in silence, which is why you won’t
find much chatter on a combat listening post or a guard tower. To
understand the creative power in silence, we must understand something
about God’s own silence. God the Father loves and pours himself completely out into his one Word, and this one Word receives the fullness
of the Father, not in two words, but in the silence of one Word. God not
only speaks his Word in silence from all eternity without any interruption,
but he also hears this Word in perfect silence as an echo of his own
reflected beauty and love. Fr Jan

Our deepest Condolences

Plenary Council 2020…Give us the courage to tell our stories and speak boldly of your truth… (from the Plenary Council Prayer 2020.)
This line from the Plenary prayer, we have been praying for almost four months, calls on us to voice
our hopes and visions for the Catholic Church and its mission in the present culture. "Go, therefore, make
disciples of all nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And look, I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.' (Mt 28:19)
“What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at
this time?” in the light of these words Jesus spoke to his disciples before his ascension (Mt 28:19) Please pray and think about this question in the coming days because next Sunday, Dec 9, during Mass you will be given a card to give your answer to this question in writing.
LISTENING, LEARNING, PRAYING; An
Advent Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Mark Coleridge. At a time when the average age of Catholics in Australia is 59, it has been good to celebrate the Year of Youth which is now coming
to an end. Perhaps it would’ve been better to have a decade of youth, but the year was a promising start…. By the influence of the Holy Spirit, the Year of Youth in Australia has coincided with preparations for the Plenary Council in 2020. The Plenary Council is about the future of the Catholic Church in Australia – the whole Church, which is what the unusual word “plenary” means. Pope Francis often speaks of the need for us to become a “synodal” Church. That’s another unusual word, but it
means a Church where God speaks not just to some of the bishops some of the time but to all the baptised all the time. In that sense, the Plenary Council has already begun, because it’s more a process than an event. The process has three phases – preparation, celebration and implementation; and the first phase of preparation is well and truly underway.
The full text of the Letter can be found at the entrance of the church at the information table, printed on green A4
paper or visit our website https://scp.org.au under the Bulletin.
Gold Coast Lay Carmelites monthly meeting will

Our next meeting will be on the 17th February, 2019. We wish you all a very blessed and holy
Christmas and a joyful New Year. For any enquiries please
