“Stay awake! Be prepared.” The advice is clear enough. And chances are, most of us are inclined to follow this fervent instruction from the Lord. We’d like to be vigilant. We’d like to be ready. When the ultimate Advent comes—when Jesus returns—we don’t want to be the one left standing alone in the field. But on its own, the desire to be alert isn’t necessarily enough to keep us from drifting off into a spiritual siesta. Consider the apostles in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus gave them a similar instruction to the one he gives today: “Keep watch” (Mt 26:38). And what happened? They fell asleep. “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (26:41). How about us? Can we really stay awake? Indeed, the season of Advent presents a challenge: Jesus asks us to be ready to greet him at any hour. Though our spirit may be willing, can our “flesh” pull it off? Especially in this month of holiday hustle and bustle, how can we stay constantly focused on welcoming Christ?

Saint Paul gives us a hint in today’s epistle: “Put on the armor of light...Put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom 13:12, 14). Just as light prevents physical sleep, so too the light of Christ prevents spiritual slumber. When we invite Jesus’ Spirit into our hearts, it’s like keeping a vigil light flickering in the window of our souls. We may go about our business, but that expectant flame never burns out. So when Jesus comes again—even like a thief in the night—he will find us ready and waiting.

Advent Prayer

F a t h e r , all-powerful God, your eternal Word took flesh on our earth when the

Virgin Mary placed her life at the service of your plan. Lift our minds in watchful hope to heart the voice which announces his glory and open our minds to receive the Spirit who prepares us for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. From catholic.org

Take the 2014 Synod Survey Pope Francis has energized our Church in so many ways. He is asking us to look at our own living of the Gospel as a witness of the Roman Catholic faith to others. One of the “basics” to which the Holy Father is urging us to return is the fundamental importance of the family as domestic church. To that end, Pope Francis will convene an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops next October to focus specifically on the Pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization.

It is the intention of the Synod to examine information on how parishes and areas throughout the Universal Church are living out various Church documents related to family life. In preparation for the 2014 Synod on the Family Pope Francis is seeking input from the Catholic faithful. Those interested in taking a Vatican survey of how Church teaching on family life issues is being lived local-ly are encouraged to visit the Diocesan website at www.sbdiocese.org and click on the corresponding link in the Resource Center. Responses must be submitted by December 10.

We want to express our deep thanks to the wonderful response by our Community of St. Patrick to the call for food. You were most generous— we were able to feed 69 families this year, without needing last minute purchases. Also, we were able to send over excess donations to support the Food Bank at St. Christopher parish! We also want to thank the volunteers who sorted food throughout the Sunday’s this past month— it made a great impact on organization! Finally, a big thank you to the Confirmation 3 Teens & Catechists who came during their week off of school to assist with putting the food baskets together and helped distribute them. Thank you one and all— this was a community effort that was beautifully supported and executed! We are truly blessed here at St. Patrick! God bless you and your families!

UPCOMING ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES IN THE HEMET VICARIATE

Through the sacrament of Penance, (also known as Confession/Reconciliation) God offers mercy and forgiveness. In response to this gift, we are called to become vehicles of Christ’s love, making amends and restoring justice and the bonds that have been broken. Healed and forgiven, we are sent to work for peace, justice and love in our communities and world.

Receiving this sacrament during Advent is extremely encouraged, as we are preparing ourselves for Christ’s coming. Many parishes in our area will be offering Penance Services. Feel free to attend any of these services so that you may “come home” healed for the holiday.
