First Sunday of Advent December 2, 2018

Additional Masses during Advent Beginning this week, we will have an additional daily Mass at 12:10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays the first three weeks of Advent (December 3-5, 10-12, and 17-19). We hope this additional Mass time will provide an opportunity for you to come closer to the Lord this Advent season. Advent Penance Service Our parish will have an Advent Penance Service from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18th. Please plan to come as a way of spiritually preparing for Christmas.

Musical Notes The First Sunday of Advent anticipates the coming of Christ … both at Christmas and at the end of time. The opening hymn #414 “The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns” looks forward to Jesus crowned in glory at the end of time. The cantor and the congregation turn to Jesus in Psalm #993 “To You, O Lord, I Lift My Soul” and joyfully announce the coming of the King in preparation hymn “Soon and Very Soon” (#865). The Liturgy of the Eucharist will be found in the Mass of Light, starting with #361 Holy, Holy, Holy. Through the Communion hymn we ask God to be with us in “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” (#395), while at the end of today’s service, we share the joy of the coming of our Lord with hymn #409 “People, Look East.” What is the Cantor’s role in the Liturgy? “The cantor (Latin for “singer”) proclaims the Psalm and may also sing the Gospel Acclamation and verse, key roles dependent on musical training and good diction. The cantor also acts as a song leader for the congregation when the choir is not present” (Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship (Washington, DC: USCCB, 2007)).

Angel Tree in Gathering Area Would you like to give a gift to someone in need this Christmas? We have a tree with angel ornaments in the gathering area of the church. Simply take an ornament off the tree, list your contact and gift information on the sign-up sheet next to the tree, purchase the item listed on the ornament, wrap the gift, and take it with the ornament to One22 by December 19th. One22 is located at 170 N Glenwood, on the St. John’s Church campus, in the basement of the Bright Beginnings Preschool. By giving a gift from our Angel Tree, you could be someone’s angel this Christmas!

The Colors of Christmas Concert The Jackson Hole Chorale presents “The Colors of Christmas,” a free concert on Sunday, December 2nd at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church. Refreshments will be served. Teton County’s Community Nativity Sets and Crèches will be on display, courtesy of Our Common Ground. If you have a nativity scene to share (big, small, old, unique, etc.), please either bring it to the Parish Hall in the church by 3 p.m. on December 2nd, or call (307) 690-0851 for pick up, display, and return. Messiah Sing-Along The Jackson Hole Chorale and Jackson Hole Symphony Orchestra invite you to the 2nd annual Messiah Sing-Along on Sunday, December 9th at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church.
