First Sunday of Advent (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

At the beginning of the liturgical year, the Church reminds us that the Lord will come again in his glory “to judge the living and the dead”, as we proclaim in the Creed every Sunday. This is not meant to instill fear in us. It is rather an invitation to prepare to welcome him, to look forward to his coming, when the last of his enemies, death, will be destroyed (cf. 1 Cor 15: 26) and we will rise victorious with our King.

The season of Advent prepares us to celebrate the historical birth of Jesus, our Savior. In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah reflects the attitude that runs through the Old Testament, one of eager expectation that our liberation is at hand. Jesus in the gospel invites us to be vigilant and pray for “the strength to escape the coming tribulation and to stand before the Son of Man” (Lk 21:36).

Our task is to prepare the world for the Lord’s coming and to do so with joy. May our participation in the Eucharist help us this Advent to put Christ in the center of our Christmas celebration. God bless you!

Primer Domingo de Adviento (Ciclo C) Reflexión Dominical

Al comienzo del año litúrgico, la Iglesia nos recuerda que el Señor volverá glorioso “a juzgar a vivos y muertos”, como proclamamos en el Credo cada domingo. No es para infundirnos temor. Más bien es una invitación a prepararnos para recibirlo, a esperar su segunda venida, cuando destruirá el último enemigo, la muerte, (cf. 1 Cor 15:26) y nosotros resucitemos victoriosos con nuestro Rey.

El Adviento sirve como preparación para celebrar el nacimiento histórico de Jesús, nuestro Salvador. En la primera lectura, el profeta Jeremías refleja la actitud que llena todo el Antiguo Testamento, una actitud de gozosa expectativa porque nuestra liberación está cerca. En el evangelio Jesús nos invita a ser vigilantes y orar para “poder escapar de lo que va a suceder y puedan presentarse seguros ante el Hijo del Hombre” (Lc 21, 36).

Nuestra tarea es preparar al mundo para la venida del Señor y hacerlo con alegría. Que nuestra participación en la Eucaristía durante este Adviento nos ayude a colocar a Cristo en el centro de la celebración de la Navidad. Que Dios los bendiga.

The Liturgical Calendar THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH…speaks of the calendar as a long teaching moment. “The cycle of the liturgical year and its great feasts are… basic rhythms of the Christian’s life of prayer” (CCC, n. 2698). The great feasts “commemorate” and “communicate” the mystery of Christ (n. 1171).

The Church marked off not only the days of his life, but of our life today. For Jesus is the… “firstborn of many brethren” (Rom 8:29). Those terms imply that others, many others, are to follow; and so the Church proved this claim by celebrating the feasts of the saints, beginning with the Blessed Virgin Mary, but including the apostles, martyrs and many others.

The year, as it has developed, is, like a microscope or telescope, a finely tuned instrument for keeping its object always in focus, always near; and its object is Jesus Christ.

In the course of the liturgical year, Christians receive repeated exposure to the major events of salvation history. The cycle brings times of fasting and times of feasting, times of sorrow and times of joy, times of penance and times of reconciliation. All creation tells the story. All history tells the story. All our lives, yours and mine, tell the story.

It is a story of hope.

El calendario litúrgico EL CATECISMO DE LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA…habla del calendario como una larga ocasión de enseñanza. “El ciclo del año litúrgico y sus grandes fiestas son los ritmos fundamentales de la vida de oración de los cristianos”(CIC no. 2698). Las grandes fiestas “conmemoran” y “comunican” el misterio de Cristo (no. 1171).

La Iglesia conmemora no sólo los días de su vida, sino también de la nuestra hoy. Pues Jesús es el… “Primogénito entre muchos hermanos” (Rom 8, 29). Lo cual significa que otros, muchos otros, vendrán detrás. Y así la Iglesia demuestra esto al celebrar las fiestas de los santos, comenzando por la Santísima Virgen María, e incluyendo a los apóstoles, los mártires y muchos otros.

Tal como se ha desarrollado, el año es como un microscopio o un telescopio, un instrumento finamente calibrado para que su objetivo se mantenga siempre enfocado y cercano; y su objetivo es Jesucristo.

En el curso del año litúrgico los cristianos están expuestos repetidas veces a los eventos principales de la historia de la salvación. El ciclo trae consigo tiempos de ayuno y tiempos de fiesta, horas de dolor y horas de alegría, momentos de penitencia y de reconciliación. La creación entera narra la historia. Toda la historia la cuenta. Todas nuestras vidas, la tuya y la mía, narran la historia.

Es una historia de esperanza.

Two precious relics of St. Anthony of Padua will visit our church on Tuesday, December 4, directly from his basilica in Padua, Italy. Veneration begins at 2 pm, with Mass at 7 pm. Dos preciosas reliquias de San Antonio de Padua, traídas directamente desde su basílica en Italia, serán expuestas en nuestra iglesia el martes 4 de diciembre. The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Saturday, December 8, is a holy day of obligation. Please note the following: that weekend we are obligated to attend two different Masses in order to fulfill two distinct obligations, one for the Immaculate Conception, one for the 2nd Sunday of Advent. One cannot fulfill both obligations by attending only one Mass. The vigil Mass on Friday at 7 pm as well as the morning Mass on Saturday fulfill the obligation for the Immaculate Conception. The Saturday evening Mass does not, as it is the Sunday Mass. La solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, sábado 8 de diciembre, es fiesta de obligación. Les hacemos notar que ese fin de semana estamos obligados a asistir a dos misas diferentes para cumplir con dos obligaciones diferentes, la de la Inmaculada Concepción y la del segundo domingo de Adviento. No pueden cumplirse las dos con una sola misa. La misa de la vigilia el viernes a las 7 pm así como la de la mañana del sábado cumplen con la obligación de la Inmaculada Concepción. No así la del sábado en la tarde, ya que esta es la misa del domingo.

Holy Lives /Vidas Santas SERVANT OF GOD MARTÍN LAWERS GONZÁLEZ (1881-

1933) — A diocesan priest from Irapuato, Mexico. An eager evangelizer at the time of the conflict between Church and State, his life ended tragically.

He served the diocese in various posts, and in 1927, while he was pastor of Our Lady of Soledad, Fr. Lawers was exiled during the persecution of Calles. He established himself in Sonora at first, later moving to Los Angeles, California and eventually settling in San Bernardino.

Once the situation in Mexico returned to normal and churches re-opened in 1932, Fr. Lawers returned to Irapuato and to his parish. But he started receiving threats against his person, to which he paid no heed.

On February 19, 1933, while he was celebrating Mass, a man brutally attacked him, stabbing him several times. Fr. Lawers died of his wounds. His cause has been introduced.

SIERVO DE DIOS MARTÍN LAWERS GONZÁLEZ (1881-1933) — Sacerdote diocesano, de Irapuato, Guanajuato, México. Siempre preocupado por evangelizar a los fieles, “luchando contra corriente” en una época en la cual se suscitó el conflicto entre la Iglesia y el gobierno, nadie esperó que su vida terminara de una manera trágica.

Luego de servir a su diócesis en diversos cargos, en 1927, siendo párroco de Nuestra

Señora de la Soledad, el P. Lawers fue desterrado durante la persecución de Calles. Se

radicó primero en Sonora, trasladándose después a Los Ángeles, California, y finalmente se

estableció en San Bernardino, California.

Una vez que la situación en el país se normalizó, se abrieron las iglesias para el culto en

el año de 1932, el padre Lawers volvió a Irapuato, ejerciendo nuevamente en la parroquia

del centro. Una vez allí recibió amenazas escritas a las que no prestó importancia. El 19 de

febrero de 1933, mientras el padre Lawers celebraba la misa de la mañana, un criminal le

atacó brutalmente dándole dos puñaladas en el pecho y otras más por la espalda, a

consecuencia de las cuales falleció. Su causa ha sido introducida.

Today, on the First Sunday of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year; that is, a new journey of the People of God with Jesus Christ, our

Shepherd, who guides us through history toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Therefore, this day has a special charm, it makes us

experience deeply the meaning of history. We rediscover the beauty of all being on a journey: the Church, with her vocation and mission, and

all humanity, peoples, civilizations, cultures, all on a journey across the paths of time.

The model of this spiritual disposition, of this way of being and journeying in life, is the Virgin Mary. A simple girl from the country who carries within her heart the fullness of hope in God! In her womb, God’s hope took flesh, it became man, it

became history: Jesus Christ…. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her, she who is mother, a mamma and knows how to guide us. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her

during this season of active waiting and watchfulness.

Comenzamos hoy, primer domingo de Adviento, un nuevo año litúrgico, es decir un nuevo camino del Pueblo de Dios con Jesucristo, nuestro Pastor, que nos guía en la historia hacia la realización del Reino de Dios. Por ello este día tiene un atractivo especial, nos hace experimentar un sentimiento profundo del sentido de la historia. Redescubrimos la belleza de estar todos en camino: la Iglesia, con su vocación y misión, y toda la humanidad, los pueblos, las civilizaciones, las culturas, todos en camino a través de los senderos del tiempo.

El modelo de esta actitud espiritual, de este modo de ser y de caminar en la vida, es la Virgen María. Una sencilla muchacha de pueblo, que lleva en el corazón toda la

esperanza de Dios. En su seno, la esperanza de Dios se hizo carne, se hizo hombre, se

hizo historia: Jesucristo. (…) Dejémonos guiar por Ella, que es madre, es mamá, y sabe cómo guiarnos. Dejémonos guiar por Ella en este tiempo de espera y de vigilancia activa.

When receiving Holy Communion, remember to bow your head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence, and receive the Body and the Blood of the Lord from the priest or minister. Consume It immediately and move on

reverently.

Thanksgiving Day Mass and we recognized the Student

of the Month recipients. Thank you Mrs. Spitale, Mrs.

Pérez, Ms. Villar, Ms. Zapiain and the 2nd graders for a

lovely celebration!
