FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018

La mayoría de las veces, cuando la gen-

te habla o discute sobre el apocalipsis, se ve

como muerte y destrucción; y el evangelio del

primer domingo de Adviento parece apoyar tal

concepto. "La gente morirá de miedo ante lo

que vendrá sobre el mundo". Cuando leemos

pasajes como este, es fácil comprender por qué

el fin de los tiempos asusta a los fieles.

Sin embargo, los fieles no tienen nada

que temer del poder y la gloria de Dios al en-

trar al mundo. Debemos mirar profundamente en el Evange-

lio para entender la verdad; para que podamos tener la con-

fianza de "permanecer parados y levantar [nuestras] cabe-

zas" porque estamos en el momento de la tribulación que

comenzó en la cruz y continúa hoy. "Todos los que viven en

la faz de la tierra" necesitan la fuerza para "estar vigilantes

en todo momento" para enfrentar "las tribulaciones que son

inminentes y estar ante el Hijo del Hombre".

La temporada de Adviento es un tiempo de prepara-

ción para que el poder y la gloria de Dios entren en el mun-

do celebrado en la encarnación, la Natividad. Esto ya ha

ocurrido y ocurre todos los domingos en la Eucaristía. Pe-

ro... ¡los católicos son de cabeza dura! Sabemos cuáles son

las enseñanzas de la Eucaristía, pero nos resulta difícil creer

la verdad en nuestros corazones. Justificamos con una multi-

tud de razones por nuestros pecados y una preocupación

general de no estar preparados; Y por esta razón, nos inquie-

ta la idea de enfrentarnos a nuestro creador. La parte triste es

que tenemos tan poco respeto por la misericordia y el poder

del Señor. Todos los domingos, no solo estamos ante el Hijo

del Hombre, sino que lo recibimos y nos convertimos en la

encarnación de Cristo en el mundo. Como encarnación del

cuerpo de Cristo, no tenemos nada que temer al apocalipsis.

Sufriremos la tribulación, pero la eternidad es segura para

los fieles que están "vigilantes en todo momento".

Most often when people speak of, or

discuss, the apocalypse it is seen as doom and

destruction; and the gospel on the first Sunday

of Advent seems to support such a concept.

“People will die of fright in anticipation of

what is coming upon the world.” When we

read such passages as this, it is easy to under-

stand why the end of time frightens the faith-

ful.

However, the faithful have nothing to

fear from the power and glory of God entering the world.

We are to look deeply into the Gospel so as to understand

the truth; so that, we may have the confidence to “stand erect

and raise [our] heads” because we are in the time of tribula-

tion which began at the cross and continues today.

“Everyone who lives on the face of the earth” needs the

strength to “to be vigilant at all times” so as to face “the trib-

ulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of

Man.”

The Advent season is intended as a time of prepara-

tion for the power and glory of God to enter the world cele-

brated in the incarnation, the Nativity. This has already oc-

curred and occurs every Sunday in the Eucharist.

But...Catholics are thick skulled! We know what the teach-

ings of the Eucharist are, but find it difficult to believe the

truth in our hearts. We justify with a multitude of reasons for

our sins and a general ill concern to be prepared; and for this

reason we are uneasy in the idea of facing our maker. The

sad part is that we have such little regard for the Lord’s mer-

cy and power. Every Sunday, we not only stand before the

Son of Man but we receive him and become the incarnation

of Christ in the world. As the incarnation of Christ’s body

we have nothing to fear of the apocalypse. We will suffer

the tribulation but eternity is secure for the faithful who are

“vigilant at all times.”
