Dear St. Matthew Parishioners and Friends,

The beautiful task of Advent is to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope. This insight of Archbishop Cardinal Ratzinger, (Pope Benedict XVI), holds out a hope and purpose for our journey of prayer through Advent.

To me, Advent is an opportunity to explore our store of memories, especially those associated with Christmas. Part of the wonder of Christmas comes with the sights, sounds, and smells of the season. They carry a certain nostalgia, allowing us to relive the magical moments of our favorite Christmas memories: waking up to a blanket of freshly fallen snow...receiving the answer to a secret prayer whispered only to God the Father...baking homemade cookies with my Gran...driving through neighborhoods in search of the brightest Christmas lights...Midnight Mass...singing Christmas carols at the nursing home...a chilly walk home from church. My mother would always place the Advent wreath on a white tablecloth. She explained that the color represented Christ’s purity and His swaddling clothes.

One of my fondest childhood memories was helping my grandmother prepare the fire on Christmas Eve. The tradition in our house was to clear the fireplace of old ashes and prepare the fire to welcome the Baby Jesus. All the grandchildren would have a specific responsibility, mine was to roll sheets of newspaper and carefully place them in a neat pile – (Continued on page 2)

Bendiciones

Dear St. Matthew parishioners and friends, (cont’d) these were then added to the kindling – it was a long process – lovingly prepared for our Saviour’s birth. I remember watching with wonder as my father would light a candle and place it in a window, this was intended to guide a stranger to warmth and safety (an ancient Scottish tradition). Over the years my dad would remind us the candle also symbolized our welcoming of Mary and Joseph as they looked for shelter for Jesus’ birth. My sisters and I would help assemble the crib and hide the baby Jesus until Christmas. I always remember on Christmas morning, we would run downstairs and would look to find Jesus in the manger. I always felt really happy he was there. Christmas memories are never really gone. We may stow them away in a corner of our mind, but come Advent, they come out to gladden us once more and encourage us to work to make more new memories that our families and friends will cherish in years to come.

May God bless you all in this Advent journey of reflection and prayer.

May the Holy Spirit strengthen hope in your hearts and bring you to a joyful Christmas celebration.

Blessings. Ann Connelly Admissions Director St. Matthew Catholic School

BE PREPARED Be prepared. It’s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and

friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can’t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ESTAR PREPARADO Debes estar preparado. Estemos preparados. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
