Stewardship Reflection

The Lenten practices of prayer, repentance, and almsgiving, are also practices that lead us to Stewardship.

It is no surprise that water literally runs through all the readings on this First Sunday of Lent — from the flood waters experienced by Noah in Genesis, to St. Peter comparing Baptism to this flood, to Jesus venturing into the desert for 40 days immediately after His Baptism, as reported by St. Mark. There are more than 700 references to water in Holy Scripture, but as we begin our Lenten journeys, our concentration needs to be on our own Baptism and our personal Baptismal call.Stewardship has been defined as our response to that Baptismal call through discipleship and service. Just as Jesus entered the desert for 40 days, we are doing the same during Lent.Defining our Baptismal call is part of what we should be striving to do at this time. Baptism calls us to a sense of mission. Another key word in today’s scripture is “covenant .” The reading from Genesis speaks to God’s covenant with us, His people. A covenant, nevertheless, is a two-way street. God has blessed us with the Holy Spirit and the Lord has promised us everlasting life if we fulfill His desires. It is time for us to discover how we are going to live out our covenant with God .

First Sunday of LentMark 1:12-15

The announcement that Jesus makes as he begins his preaching in today’s Gospel is to “Repent and believe in the gospel.” The essence of Jesus’ message is an invitation to shift our allegiance. To live in the Kingdom of God is to pledge allegiance to God, to pledge loyalty and submission to the will of God and to everything that God stand for. Jesus knew that in our lives we’d find ourselves tempted to pledge allegiance to many other realities such as power, perfection, popularity, pleasure, possessions, and position, and that’s just one letter of the alphabet. When we pledge allegiance to any of these realities, our actions flow from them. To repent, then is to shift allegiance. When Jesus calls us to repent, he’s not asking us to be sorry for a laundry list of momentary lapses in judgment. He’s asking us to shift allegiance, to begin on a path to citizenship in the Kingdom of God. How is Jesus inviting you personally to shift your allegiance this Lent?

Eucharistic AdorationIf it is comfort you are seeking, come sit at the feet of Jesus, Who humbly makes His presence known in the Blessed Sacrament. Feel free to stop by Good Shepherd Chapel, Wednesday’s, from 1830-1930, to spend some time with Our Savior. You won’t regret it!

FROM USCCB COMPENDIUM OF CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

445. What does God prohibit by his command, “You shall not have other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2)? (2110-2128; 2138-2140) This commandment forbids:

Polytheism and idolatry, which divinizes creatures, power, money, or even demons.

Superstition which is a departure from the worship due to the true God and which also expresses itself in various forms of divination, magic, sorcery and Spiritism.

Irreligion which is evidenced: in tempting God by word or deed; in sacrilege, which profanes sacred persons or sacred things, above all the Eucharist; and in simony, which involves the buying or selling of spiritual things.

Atheism which rejects the existence of God, founded often on a false conception of human autonomy.

Agnosticism which affirms that nothing can be known about God and involves indifferentism and practical atheism.

Catholic Community QuestionThis week’s Question: “What are ‘The Sources of Prayer’?” The answer to last week’s Question: “What’s ‘The Serpent’s Fast’?” Everyone knows the story of the serpent in the garden from Genesis, and its universal symbolism of temptation and evil. But, it seems even the serpent has another, more inspiring side. Surprisingly, it has symbolized repentance, reconciliation, and readiness for the Eucharist because of the old fable of its forty-day fast before shedding its skin. There is also an old legend that the serpent quenched its thirst only after leaving its venom in its den lest it kill itself.

Nurturing Family RelationshipsA Change of Heart

QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR ADULTSWhen or how could you step away from your daily responsibilities to renew yourself, so that you can do a better job of following in the footsteps of Jesus?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR CHILDRENWhat good habit could you work on during Lent, so you could grow closer to God?

STRONG CATHOLIC FAMILIESSTRONG CATHOLIC YOUTH

“The Holy Family is the icon of the domestic Church, called to pray together. The family is the domestic Church and must be the first school of prayer. It is in the family that children, from the tenderest age, can learn to perceive the meaning of God, also thanks to the teaching and example of their parents: to live in an atmosphere marked by God’s presence.” - Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI 12/28/2011
