We want to help you improve your English skills over the next two terms

You will be given a Student Diary to record your weekly use of English

We will try to spend an hour each Monday morning on English skills

What to Bring to Class Each Day Your notebook: to write down information

that you can refer to later Two pens: to write with, one will fail so have

a backup Your Student Diary: to record your use of

English Your brain: so you can learn! Your voice: to ask questions. No questions,

poor learning Your headphones: to listen to music in the

labs

Roll Call: New Rules

Roll will be called at 9:15am and 1:15pm I DO NOT want a class disturbance at this

time or afterwards The door will be locked during roll call

I am not interested in why you arrived late I am only interested in recording the roll

and running the class with NO DISTURBANCE

If you touch my roll book, I will mark you absent

If You Arrive Late to Class

Do not talk to me; sit down Write your name, the date and your

arrival time on a piece of paper At the break, hand me the piece of

paper

Is this understood? Have you written this down in your

notebook?

Learning Your Name

Take a blank sheet of paper Fold it into quarters lengthwise Make it into a triangular prism

Write on it to make a sign: Your first name One word that will help me remember

you e.g. Warren Beard

I will take a photo of you with your sign

Communication

Communication is going to be very important You need to understand me, and I need to

understand you

“Can you say that again more slowly please?” “I didn’t understand that, can you explain it in

a different way please?” “What does that word mean?” “I am having trouble with your accent, can

you say that again thanks”

Communication

Are you going to talk to me?

No questions, no discussion => no learning

No learning => no diploma

No diploma => no university degree => Visa gets cancelled If you want to stay here, be an active

learner
