Looking Forward to 2014
The end of the year is fast approaching and this means that the beginning of the new year is nearly upon us. There are many things to be done to finish the year well and to be pre-pared to effectively join God in mission to John-son, Kansas, and the world in 2014. I invite you to participate as fully as possible in this prepara-tion time. Some of you may think that you are too old to help lead the church into a new year and that it is time for the younger people to take on these tasks. The younger people may be thinking that they cannot lead, because the older mem-bers have too tight a control on the power struc-tures in the church. And there are others who may just feel as though they are never listened too anyway, so why try to help lead the church. There is no such thing as too old or too young to be involved in leading the church. We need eve-ryone’s voice to be heard as we discern God’s will for us in the coming year.
Many of our plans will need to be estab-lished before Church Conference. Our District Superintendent Don Hasty will preside at our an-nual Church Conference on Thursday, November 14, at 5:00pm. Please make plans to attend and participate in this time of celebration of what God has done through us over the past year and will do through us in the coming year.
To help us prepare I am calling an all church Visioning Gathering on Sunday, October 27, at 6:00pm. At this gathering we will review our existing mission and consider whether it needs revision. We will ask for God to give us a vision for the coming year and set a few large goals to help us reach God’s vision for our faith
community in 2014. We will also work in small groups to help each committee, board, and coun-cil set several goals that serve the general goals and vision we will receive from God.
This may well be the most important meet-ing of the year in the life of our church. We will live out of the results of this meeting for the next entire year! This means that every person who can should join us. We need the wisdom of those who have been with us for the better part of a century. We need the new ideas of those who are newer to the church. We need to hear from those who have not been involved in church to know what is missing from our ministry in the community. We need the exuberance of our youth. And, since Psalm 8 tells us that the words of even the youngest among us can bring us to victory, we need the youngest members of our faith community to participate.
This is what Methodists have called Chris-tian Conference for nearly 300 years. We will gather as the body of church (all ages and gifts) and will jointly seek to know God’s mind. No de-cisions will be made; we will only discern God’s will (which is the way every church board, com-mittee, and council should operate through the year). As part of my doctoral work, I will be lead-ing you through an early version of a model for Christian Conference that I am developing. So, attending this meeting will not only benefit John-son United Methodist Church, but the things we learn about jointly hearing God’s voice may well affect resources that will guide churches around the world as they seek to know God’s voice also!
When you come on October 27, bring drinks and snacks to share with everyone. I ea-gerly await to discover what God will do through us. Pastor Richard

PRESCHOOL NEWS!!!
September was a great month for preschool! We have been learning about fire
safety for letter ‘F’ to prepare for our trip to the Fire Station on October 8th! We also had a
feet painting party followed by a foot bath, followed by a flying flip flop contest! We prac-
ticed peeling eggs for ‘E’ and practiced ways to be Helpers for letter ‘H’!
We enjoy our weekly Wednesday sessions with Pastor Richard. We have been learn-
ing about the world that God made by activities, singing, and reading!
The afternoon class has been attending and enjoying story hour on Mondays at 2:00.
Both classes are getting great at our routine, keeping up with my business, and treating
each other like great friends!
October will bring the study of Fall, Trick-or-Treating, trains, tents, and fun Hallow-
een Stories! We will also try to plant our own pumpkin plant after reading It’s Pumpkin Time!

PUMPKIN CHEESE BALL
INGREDIENTS: 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1 carton (8 oz) spreadable chive and onion cream cheese
2 cups (8 oz) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
2 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 celery rib or broccoli stalk
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a small bowl, beat cream cheeses until smooth. Stir in the cheddar cheese,
paprika and cayenne. Shape into a ball; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 4
hours or until firm.
2. With a knife, add vertical lines to the cheese ball to resemble a pumpkin; insert
a celery rib or broccoli stalk for the stem. Serve with apples and crackers.
Yield: 2-1/2 cups.
