Youth Back-to-School Prayer 6:00
Chancel Choir 7:00
Since Britt is still busy with 2nd Mile Mission Week, we
thought we would share some photos from this incredible
week at FUMC. During 2nd Mile Mission Week, our high
school students led our middle school students, who in turn
planned and led the Kids’ Mission
Camp! We talked about the persecuted church and
our middle schoolers did a GREAT job teaching our
younger ones.
God looks so
good on them!!!
Two of the mis-
sion projects
completed this
week include
the younger kids
assembling food bags for our Kanz for
Kids ministry, and the youth working at
Southern Souls Animal Shelter helping
them with some cleaning (and loving
on some animals).

Dear FUMC,
Perhaps you noticed that Cathie and I were not at church on Sunday, July 22. We decided to take a short adventure to celebrate our 40th anniversary which was in fact on July 22nd. We visited Bob and Charlotte Henderson for two nights in Wetumpka where we enjoyed a play by the Depot Players followed on the next night by a nighttime boat ride on Lake Jordan. Next we went to Atlanta for two nights. We stayed at a hotel close to Ray’s On the River which is a great restaurant and a good place to celebrate an anniversary. But while we were in Atlanta, we did other things. Two of these things were glory sightings for me: The Dekalb International Farmers Market and the Georgia
Aquarium.
At the Farmer’s Market, we were cast into a world of many cultures. They sold vegetables that I had never seen (or sometimes haven’t even heard of) before this trip. There were spices galore sold in larger quantity than just the little bottles in the local supermarkets. A huge variety of meats was plentiful, every kind of cheese that you may want was available, live seafood was also available. And the thing that struck me most was the many languages being spoken. All of these people from young children to older adults were here in one place to shop for life’s basic necessity, food. It gave
me hope for the future that perhaps one day the world with all its many peoples can come together as one.
At the Georgia Aquarium I was again reminded of the miracles provided by God. One doesn’t really think about what is going on under the oceans. It was a definite reminder that there is another world in which there are many different species living together. I had never really seen a Whale Shark up close and personal. Nor had I seen those giant Manta Rays that close either. We watched Beluga Whales frolicking (and I do mean frolicking like otters). It was amazing. It reminded me of a couple of things. One thing is a hymn which is not in the United Methodist Hymnal but some of you may know; “God of the Sparrow.” Please allow me to quote from this hymn. “God of the sparrow, God of the whale, God of the swirling stars, How does the creature say Awe?...How does the creature say Praise? God of the rainbow, God of the
cross, God of the empty grave, How does the creature say Grace?...How does the creature say thanks?”
The other thing it reminded me of was a Biblical text from Psalm 104 which talks about creating the leviathan to frolic in the sea. It is thought that a leviathan was a large sea creature like a shark or whale. This just reinforces my belief that God had to have gotten a kick out of all that He created. We remember that during creation God said that “it was good.” To me, that means He really liked it all. Visiting this aquarium simply reminded me that God creates wonderful and good
things. Anyway, if you haven’t been to the Georgia Aquarium, I recommend it highly.
I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday. God bless,
Billy
