● The Congregational Transition Initiative process exists to help our church realize its mission of offering community for connection, renewal and transformation.

● The process will focus on 3 developmental areas identified by the consultants:

○ Governance

○ Healthy Congregation

○ Ministerial Transition

● We will integrate our efforts in these 3 areas through an ongoing, intentional exchange of ideas and information with the congregation, staff and leadership.

● Through this process, we will establish the foundation necessary to launch a longer-term healing, transformational AI process.

What is Appreciative Inquiry (AI)?

The Principles of AI • People individually and collectively have unique gifts, skills and contributions to

bring to life • Organizations and communities are sources of unlimited relational capacity, created

and lived in language • The images we hold of the future are socially created and, once articulated, serve to

guide individual and collective actions • Through human communication (inquiry and dialogue), people can shift their

attention and action away from problem analysis to lift up worthy ideals and productive possibilities for the future

AI Process • Discovery – What gives life? (appreciating what we do well) • Dream – What might be? (envisioning what we are called to be) • Design – What should be? (co-constructing a shared vision of the future) • Destiny – What will be? (committing to specific actions to create that future)

Definition: Core team tasked with researching, designing and proposing a governance structure that meets our congregation’s needs.

Mission: Research and seek out governance models used by analogous congregations. Propose and build a structure for our church that will address both the immediate needs for clarification and modification of our existing governance model, as well as the longer-term needs for a recommended future model.

Definition: Search committee for selection of Interim/Developmental minister

Mission: Using UUA best practices and resources, and information gathered by core team and CTI team, determine the goals for the interim/developmental minister and seek out and select the best candidate for our congregations needs. Lead the process for engagement of strong ministerial leadership through a sequence of steps:

a. A temporary senior minister through mid-2019

b. An interim or developmental senior minister for the next 2 to 5 years

c. A called senior minister

Tasks:

○ Temporary minister liason ○ Interim vs Developmental ○ Vision of senior minister role ○ Ministerial searches
