on your decision to apply to Hofstra University.

At Hofstra, every application receives individual attention and special care. We realize that each applicant is unique, and through our review of your application, we seek to discover your distinct and exceptional qualities.

Just as we are reviewing you, we know that you are reviewing us. Every university has its own qualities and advantages that students need to weigh carefully. We believe that the combination of renowned faculty who are devoted to excellence in teaching as well as scholarship, small classes, and a dynamic campus environment located near New York City makes Hofstra an excellent choice.

If you have not done so already, we strongly encourage you to plan a visit to our campus. A visit allows you to experience firsthand the wealth of opportunities we offer our undergraduate students. At the back of this publication you will find information about visiting.

Please feel free to call our Office of Admission at 1-800-HOFSTRA if you need further assistance.

A Distinct Experience

Imagine a college experience that combines outstanding faculty, small classes, a multitude of study abroad options, vibrant extracurricular life and a campus so beautiful it is recognized as an arboretum. Now, add to this New York City and all the amazing internship opportunities and cultural experiences that abound. Sound too good to be true?

Hardly. This is Hofstra University!

At Hofstra you will live and learn in a community of first-rate professors who place a priority on teaching. You will share your classrooms, residence halls, clubs and organizations with undergraduate students from nearly every U.S. state and 50 countries. You will have the chance to explore majors ranging from accounting to African studies, English to engineering, and finance to film. And you will do all this on a campus bursting with vitality, including 200 student clubs and organizations, 37 residence halls, 17 NCAA Division I sports, and hundreds of social, academic and cultural events planned each year.

Then there is New York City. The city is less than an hour from our campus and easily accessed by a free shuttle to the local train station. Whether exploring the museums, theaters, neighborhoods and parks that make New York City the world’s cultural nexus, or interning at top businesses and organizations in the world’s capital for finance, communications, entertainment, law and international trade, you will find the city a resource like no other.

Recipients of our nation’s top honors, including Emmy Award winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Humanities and New York Public Library Fellows, our faculty are world-renowned for their expertise.

More important, our faculty are devoted to teaching.Only faculty – not graduate assistants – teach our courses, and we keep classes small so that interaction between student and professor becomes an inherent part of the classroom experience. The bonds you build here naturally lead to future endeavors in which you might help a professor with a research project or seek a professor’s guidance with regard to graduate or professional school.

“ There’s no cookie-cutter mold here. We get to know students as individuals – their strengths and challenges. And we help them reach their potential.”

To Apply for Undergraduate Admission as a First-Year StudentUndergraduate first-year applicants to Hofstra University may apply by using our online application at hofstra.edu/apply. Please be advised that all materials and documents submitted as part of an application become the property of Hofstra University and cannot be returned to the applicant.

A first-year applicant is a current high school senior, a high school graduate with no postsecondary course work, or the recipient of a GED applying for matriculated/degree-seeking status at Hofstra University. First-year candidates may apply as Early Action or Regular Decision.

Early Action is a nonbinding early application and notification process for fall semester first-year students only. Students accepted via Early Action are not required to withdraw other college applications, but are required to notify Hofstra University of their intentions by May 1. There are two rounds of Early Action as indicated in the chart below.

Regular Decision candidates are considered on a “rolling basis.” While there is no deadline for regular decision applications, students are encouraged to apply early so as to receive the fullest consideration. Once an application and all supporting credentials are received, the application is reviewed by our Admission Committee.

CHECKLISTTo apply, please submit the following:

❑ A completed, signed and dated 2014 First-Year Student Application for Undergraduate Admission.

❑ A nonrefundable application fee. If the application fee presents a financial hardship, please ask your college advisor to contact Hofstra’s Office of Undergraduate Admission for a possible waiver.

❑ Official high school transcript(s).

❑ One teacher and one counselor letter of recommendation. Both are preferred; one (either) is required.

❑ Complete the Counselor Recommendation/High School Report Form and submit it to your College Guidance Office.

❑ Official SAT I or ACT test scores. If more than one set of scores is reported, Hofstra University will use the highest combined scores. Test scores should be sent directly from The College Board (SAT) or ACT. The Hofstra University codes to report scores are 2295 for the SAT and 2760 for the ACT.

❑ A completed essay/personal statement is strongly recommended and may be required upon review of your application.

❑Applicants who have completed AP, IB or college course work through a sponsoring university should send appropriate documentation, test scores or transcripts. Credit for such courses will be reviewed after an admission deposit is received.

Informational interviews with an admission counselor are available and may be scheduled by contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

All supplemental materials should be sent to the Hofstra University Office of Undergraduate Admission at 100 Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY 11549-1000, or [email protected].

Expand Your WorldStudents today need an education that prepares them for an interconnected world. The rapid expansion of world trade, the Internet and the global nature of news organizations continually remind us that, in order to be successful, students need an extensive awareness of other cultures and societies.

Your exposure to a deeper understanding of the world begins at Hofstra, where you will interact with undergraduate students from 46 U.S. states and territories and 50 countries who are choosing from about 140 undergraduate program options and 200 clubs and organizations. The student from Vermont who comes to Hofstra to study music and the student from Peru who is here to study computer science may meet through their shared interest in writing for the student-run weekly newspaper.

Next, you have New York City, which has always been one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Our students

constantly utilize the city as an interactive educational and professional resource. With the United Nations, multinational corporations, and ethnic neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Little Italy, a day in New York City is like a trip around the world.

Hofstra’s study abroad programs complement experiences on campus and in New York City. With programs in Africa, Belize, China, England, France, the Galápagos Islands, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and Spain, and a program that tours all of Europe, our students have an extraordinary array of opportunities to explore the world. All of our study abroad programs allow you to earn Hofstra credits and are taught by Hofstra faculty. Whether you are studying theater in London, art history in Venice, or geography of Western Europe in Europe, you will find yourself exposed to different cultures, political views and lifestyles.

The combination of experiences – from New York City to studying abroad – gives Hofstra students a substantial advantage after college. They are well-prepared to become leaders in their professional lives, fully cognizant of the interconnected world in which we live.

Please visit hofstra.edu/studyabroad for more information.

"The Hofstra in Venice 2013 Program gave me the experience of a lifetime. I made great friends, and learned inside and outside of the classroom. I became acquainted with a new culture through weekend travel to different parts of Italy such as Florence and Rome. Venice is a beautiful city and I would do the program again in a heartbeat!"

– Michael Papirmeister Public Relations Major, Class of 2014

“Before studying abroad, I never thought about the possibility that I could be an even happier person. Sevilla changed my life and perspective forever, and I came home a new, better person. Studying abroad taught me that the world has so much more to offer than I could have ever imagined. It is a challenging learning experience that I believe every student needs to have. It was the best time of my life, and I only wish that I could do it over and over again.” – Christine O’Dea, Mass Media Studies Major, Class of 2014
