From the President of the FCS Board of Directors2

Dear Friends,

We have seen many changes in our community and in our country over the past twelve months. A new President was elected. The city of Aurora welcomed a new Mayor. And while some things have changed, others remain the same. In these troubled times, not only are Family Counseling Service’s doors still open, we are serving more clients than ever.

What do FCS’s clients look like? They are everyday people in our community; they’re your friends, your neighbors, and your family. We recently started a campaign to illustrate just that – the FCS Faces

campaign on Facebook. I recommend following Family Counseling Service and the FCS Faces pages to check them out. We want the community and especially our supporters to know who it is they are helping.

How has Family Counseling Service been able to keep our doors open through this tragic period of Illinois economic history? The answer is simple. We could not have done it without the support of our donors, our volunteer board members, and the tireless work performed by Dr. Eric Ward and his accomplished staff.

I encourage you to read the following pages in our annual report. Take note of the generosity of our wonderful donors as well as the skilled staff that help Family Counseling Service operate on a daily basis to meet its mission. I know that whatever the next year brings, Family Counseling Service will be here with doors open, serving people and helping build a stronger community.

Travis Andry,

President, FCS Board of DirectorsFirst Vice President Commercial Banking, Old Second National Bank

4Early in 2016, we took on an ambitious task.

The goal was simple: build a place where people come to learn.

We started with a 5,000 sq. ft. storage space that, for many years, served as the repair garage for various auto dealerships that were housed in our building in the early and mid-1900’s. We turned it into a space where children and adults can learn basic life skills and can learn how to cope with life’s challenges. We call it, simply, The Garage.

We Built...

The “Garage” before we began construction

Classroom space, a group room, training kitchen and computer lab all help kids learn life skills

A game area gives our kids a place to have fun while they’re here

...a Garage?

A training kitchen lets kids learn basic nutrition and cooking skills

A large classroom area is used for teaching life skills, and for continuing education for local professionals

“The last time I self-injured was August 12, 2012. That’s also the last time I was in a hospital. That’s a

really important day for me. That wasn’t what I wanted for my life. So I decided to get better.”
