Dear friends,On October 7, 2018, Arizona Public Media’s (AZPM) fi rst radio station, KUAZ-AM 1550, celebrated 50 years of service to the University of Arizona and our community. As we approach 2019, Arizona’s fi rst public television station, KUAT Channel 6, today known simply as PBS 6, will celebrate 60 years of service. For the past six decades, AZPM has measured success by the value and the impact it creates. AZPM inspires the community not only through national PBS and NPR programming and its own original local productions, but also through extensive and growing community outreach. Last January, in partnership with the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, AZPM produced and hosted the latest in its Community Interactive series. This live, interactive community conversation focused on arts and culture in Southern Arizona and was moderated by PBS NewsHour Arts Correspondent Jeffrey Brown. To demonstrate AZPM’s commitment to continuing that conversation, AZPM created Spotlight on the Arts this past summer. Hosted by Mark McLemore, Spotlight on the Arts is a series of casual conversations with local artists and community arts leaders in advance of openings, exhibitions, and cultural events.PBS 6 continues to be Tucson’s most decorated television station. AZPM staff have been recognized with 45 individual Emmy® awards over the last four years. In April 2018, AZPM was honored with seven Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association. Drawing on the strengths of AZPM’s investment in news and public affairs programming, PBS 6 launched Arizona 360 in January. Hosted by veteran journalist Lorraine Rivera, the 30-minute weekly program is broadcast throughout Arizona. Each week, Arizona 360 features a variety of perspectives on a single issue that directly affects people in our state.Preceding the 2018 midterm elections, AZPM hosted three debates between candidates for the seats for Governor, Congressional District 2, and Congressional District 3. AZPM’s Your Vote 2018 initiative provided ongoing, unbiased, informational, and in-depth political coverage, while also strengthening our partnerships with other regional media outlets.Broadcasting from newly-renovated radio studios on the campus of the University of Arizona, NPR 89.1 continues to be the top news/talk format radio station in Southern Arizona and remains a trusted source of information. A partnership with Cochise County

to jointly fund the construction of a new transmission tower allowed AZPM to launch KUAS-FM 88.9/Sierra Vista, which now provides greatly-improved NPR service to audiences in Sierra Vista, and fi rst-time over-the-air NPR service to Douglas, Bisbee, and surrounding communities. Additionally, we soon expect to expand the coverage of our NPR operation to audiences in the Catalina/SaddleBrooke area on 93.3 FM. This fall, NPR 89.1 launched a new weekly public affairs show, The Buzz, hosted by Christopher Conover, which delves into local politics, the environment, arts, culture, and

innovation and discoveries made at the University of Arizona.AZPM’s original TV productions continue to garner national attention. OSIRIS-REx: Countdown to Launch, which premiered in 2016, is being distributed worldwide by American Public Television. Last October, the original AZPM documentary Not Broken, which introduced audiences to seven young people living with mental illness, debuted on PBS 6. Since its premiere, AZPM has continued to share its important messages, and in September, PBS distributed the documentary for broadcast to public television stations across the country.

Based on feedback received from viewers and listeners, AZPM introduced combined television and radio membership campaigns, allowing us to compress on-air fundraising time. AZPM’s membership, underwriting, and development efforts have all performed very well. Earlier this year, AZPM development staff received the 2018 PBS Philanthropy Award for “…major gifts fundraising efforts that strengthen a station’s fi nancial sustainability.”Your support is AZPM’s strength. Your investment enables AZPM to create meaningful original productions that reach far and touch many. As Arizona Public Media embarks on its 60th anniversary year, we remain committed to envisioning a community in which ideas abound, knowledge is sought, and learning never ends. Thank you for believing in what we do and for sharing in our commitment to build a better Southern Arizona.

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT AZPM is committed to attracting and growing audiences through the acquisition and production of distinctive content across all media platforms, providing lifelong learning opportunities for residents of Southern Arizona and audiences beyond.

TELEVISION PBS 6 continues to be one of the top PBS member stations in the country. During both the May and July 2018 national sweeps periods, PBS 6 was top-ranked in the country for whole week audience (gross rating points). PBS KIDS was ranked number fi ve. PBS 6 was consistently ranked among the top fi ve most-watched stations in the country for every national ratings period in the last year.

AZPM successfully developed and launched a new television channel, PBS 6 Plus, featuring titles from the PBS library in addition to titles acquired and scheduled to complement those offered on PBS 6. This new service continues to grow and is designed to present an additional viewing option for AZPM audiences.

AZPM launched Arizona 360, a weekly television program that offers revealing, informative, and challenging perspectives on issues that affect Arizonans, on PBS 6. Hosted by Lorraine Rivera, Arizona 360 has tackled and shed light on important issues such as Arizona/Mexico border relations, gun rights, education funding, the opioid crisis, and immigration.

ORIGINAL CONTENT PRODUCTION AZPM’s latest original documentary, Not Broken, examining teens living with mental health issues, was presented in a preview screening, panel discussion, and Q&A session to several hundred attendees at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. The overwhelming and positive audience response prompted AZPM to reconvene the panel for a radio discussion and Q&A based on dozens of questions submitted by the audience at the preview screening. From that recording, thirty and sixty-minute edited specials were broadcast on NPR 89.1 on the morning and evening of October 30. At 9:00 p.m. the same night, the sixty-minute documentary Not Broken premiered on PBS 6. In September 2018, Not Broken began airing on PBS stations across the country.

Arizona Illustrated Special: 100 Years in Space showcased excerpts from four University of Arizona-related space documentaries and included an update on the OSIRIS-REx mission.

DIGITAL & SOCIAL MEDIAArizona Public Media is building one of the top public broadcasting social media efforts in the country.

AZPM’s Facebook post ‘A’ Mountain RedforEd was the top local public media post in the nation on April 30th, leading to the highest number of total engagements (views, likes, shares) among all local public media pages in the entire U.S. and earning more than 200 new followers.

On September 7th, AZPM’s post on a proposed border wall was the top public media post in the nation.

The number of page views on azpm.org increased by 2.43% year-over-year and is just under 6 million for the year.

AZPM’s YouTube channel had just under 1.6 million page views and year-over-year growth of 61.85%.

More than 10,000 AZPM members use AZPM Passport, a membership benefi t that offers viewers ready-to-stream access to a library of their favorite PBS programming. This past year, PBS offered binge-able fan favorites, including Masterpiece programs like Poldark and Victoria. The Vietnam War and other Ken Burns documentaries were available on a rotating basis, while certain titles, such as Jamestown and Frankie Drake, were exclusive to Passport.

RADIO In 2018, KUAZ celebrated 50 years of radio service to Southern Arizona. NPR 89.1 was once again number one in the Tucson Metro for target audience 50+, full week and in morning drive, for fi rst quarter FY18.

During Summer 2017, shares, cumulative audience, quarter hour persons, and time spent listening all increased over summer 2016 for both NPR 89.1 and Classical 90.5.

With a focus on quality over quantity, AZPM successfully implemented a new timetable for reformatted radio newscasts based on changes made by NPR.

NPR 89.1 achieved a new record-high rank of #4 in the Tucson market in Summer 2018 among listeners 12 years old and older, besting its former #5 all-time-high. The driving force behind the high ranking was the amount of time spent listening (TSL), which was 6.9 % higher than the previous survey (Spring 2018) and 10.7% higher than the Summer of 2017. Programming changes on the weekend middays and afternoons resulted in a 28.6% increase in TSL.

Arizona Public Media traveled to Hermosillo, Sonora’s capital and largest city, for an in-depth report on its cross-border economic efforts and an analysis of the development of the region as a business power. While in the region, AZPM took in the sights, sounds, and economic data of the expatriate coastal village and port of nearby San Carlos, on the Sonoran side of the Arizona-Mexico economic “mega-region.”

Arizona’s ties to Sonora, Mexico are strongly backed by the economic growth experienced by both. What is clear is that the two states have the opportunity to make a global impact with the continued growth of their friendship. TO WATCH THE FULL STORY GO TO azpm.org/awards

Southern Arizona is a hotbed for astronomy, which is good for the economy, for education, and for scientists, among others. Some of the best-known photographers in this fi eld are drawn to Southern Arizona because of the local effort to keep skies darker than many other metropolitan areas. Retired astrophysicist Mike Weasner is the chair of the Oracle Dark Skies Committee. He is also involved in educational programs, and remains an active member of the astronomy community. AZPM is working to increase its visibility and extend its reach in the community through collaborations with business, educational, cultural, public service, and governmental partners.

In partnership with the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, AZPM produced and hosted Community Interactive: The Arts, a live, interactive community conversation moderated by PBS NewsHour Arts Correspondent Jeffrey Brown at the Temple of Music and Art. Topics for the panel discussion included the economic impact of arts and culture in Southern Arizona, what other communities are doing to improve their arts and culture environments, and the ability of Southern Arizona to support its arts and culture organizations. The live performance component of Community Interactive: The Arts, hosted by AZPM’s Mark McLemore, featured a wide variety of artists, including poets and musicians.

In 2019, Arizona Public Media is planning to present the latest in its meaningful conversations about challenging topics. Community Interactive: Journalism in the Age of Fake News, a 90-minute live and live-streamed conversation, will explore the present state of journalism and the role of the journalist and of each citizen in preserving a reliable and trusted watchdog of democracy: the press.

AZPM hosted four screenings and panel discussions in support of the AZPM original production Arizona & The Vietnam War and Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War. Twenty-three user-generated video stories and 16 written stories relating to Arizona & The Vietnam War were posted on a dedicated web page.

Other community events included screenings and panel discussions for NOVA: Black Hole Apocalypse, Victoria on Masterpiece, Civilizations, and The Great American Read. In each, AZPM brought together PBS or NPR content with intellectual resources from distinguished University of Arizona faculty.

Arizona Public Media increased its presence at Tucson Festival of Books, Arizona’s largest literary event and one of the top three book festivals in the country. During the two-day festival, AZPM provided guided and self-guided tours of the facility and studios, hosted student interviews with visiting authors, and connected visitors with costumed characters from several PBS Kids series.

AZPM staff also volunteered as a group at Tucson’s Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, and the Pima Animal Care Center.

STUDENTSAZPM provides real-world experience to 20 to 30 University of Arizona student employees each semester. Many of these students remain with AZPM for the duration of their college years. Through various technical, production, administrative, marketing, and community outreach roles, students receive on-the-job training to help launch them into successful post-graduate careers.

Therese Berg was the fi rst recipient of AZPM’s Marconi Award, named for the Nobel Prize-winning Italian inventor and engineer who is credited with developing the modern radio, radio-based communications, and radar.

As a counselor and teacher, Therese enhanced the lives of high school students throughout a career of selfl ess service spanning more than 40 years. Her continued commitment to education is evident in her support of the University of Arizona and Arizona Public Media.

It is because of the generous contributions of Therese and others like her that AZPM is able to offer hands-on training opportunities, apprenticeships, and internships to UA students.

VOLUNTEERSApproximately 200 volunteers give their time in support of AZPM’s mission each year, serving as community ambassadors, assisting with pledge drives, and providing administrative support. This past year, volunteers represented AZPM at special events, live productions, children’s activities, and member screenings, appeared in on-air pledge campaigns, and assisted behind the scenes.

AZPM’s 30-member volunteer Community Advisory Board (CAB) is composed of citizens who represent the diverse interests of the communities AZPM serves. The board advises AZPM management on a wide variety of issues related to providing unparalleled program and community services to audiences throughout Southern Arizona.

In the past fi scal year, volunteers donated 4,107 hours to Arizona Public Media. Community support through membership, underwriting, and volunteering is what allows AZPM to continue to provide the Southern Arizona community with the highest quality local programming.
