Dear Friends,

When Tom Roberts announced last January he would

be moving on from his position as Executive Director

of Vital Communities, he had good reason to sit

back in satisfaction. Thanks to his stewardship, Vital

Communities’ core programs were flourishing, new projects and initiatives were making positive impacts

in the Upper Valley, and Tom had laid a strong fiscal foundation for the future.

However, as we know, COVID-19 had different plans, and Vital Communities stepped up. Rather than being

a nicely paced wrap-up of his five years at the helm, Tom’s final six months were intensely active. He and the staff pivoted to a full-scale response to our region’s far-reaching and ever-changing needs. They convened

municipal leaders and local businesses to organize

economic assistance; strengthened the ranks of

Upper Valley Strong, a key regional hub for relief; led

crowdfunding to help the Valley News and other local

institutions; and worked with farmers, food businesses,

and school lunch programs to support them as the

essential local lifeline they are. Tom also led the staff in considering how we could rebuild our region, post-

COVID, along more just, equitable, and sustainable lines.

Now, as we welcome new Executive Director Sarah

Jackson (introduced on the next page), we want

to take this opportunity to thank Tom for helping

make Vital Communities the strong, connected,

essential organization it is. In a region embracing 69

municipalities in two states, Vital Communities has been

and will continue to be a nerve center, bringing together

people and organizations from all corners to create

positive change.

We also want to thank you: the many individuals,

businesses, foundations, and municipalities that

support us financially and engage with us as partners and volunteers. We’re so grateful for your trust and

participation as we build for a better future for our

region and its people.

With thanks,

Ron Shaiko

Chair, Board of Directors2

Sarah Jackson has been a part of positive community change in places ranging from Oman to Senegal to small-town Vermont. Now she is focusing on the Upper Valley as Vital Communities’ new Executive Director, where she joined the team this October.

Sarah grew up in the New Hampshire communities of Laconia and Merrimack but

has lived abroad for most of the past 30 years, working on international development

issues in Africa and the Middle East, most recently in the Persian Gulf nation of Oman.

In 2017 she joined the staff of the Montpelier-based nonprofit Institute for Sustainable Communities, working on climate solutions in Asia and moving with her husband back

to northern New England.

The local community drew her in. She began volunteer work that immersed her in

issues ranging from business sustainability to housing shortages. First she served on

the downtown revitalization task force of Randolph Region Re-Energized (R3), and last

year she took part in Vital Communities’ 10-month Leadership Upper Valley program.

“ I’m still getting to know the Upper Valley, but one of the things I find most interesting about it is that it spans two states and includes so many distinct towns and cities, each filled with people who are coming up with creative solutions to local challenges that other communities can benefit from knowing about,” she said. “Facilitating that kind of sharing is one of the things Vital Communities does best.”

Having worked in such different places, Sarah finds common threads. “One thing that’s always true is the importance of listening. In Oman, where

I was working in a very different culture and where my learning was ongoing, I felt it was critical not to go into a situation assuming you have

the answers. And that has been true for my work here. I always want to hear from

people about what they see as the issues, what has been tried before, what has

worked and what hasn’t,” she said.

“I have always loved being able to connect people with the resources they need to act on their dreams. I also love linking people and organizations with each other so they

can share ideas and solutions. It’s a matter of people wanting to do things but being

stymied in some way—can you unlock that and help them move forward?”

Building on this background and these passions, Sarah is delighted to join the Vital

Communities team and looks forward to working with our partners and communities

in the months and years to come as we realize the dreams and potential that

characterize the Upper Valley.
