ABSTRACT

Nowadays, farmers are finding ways to increase crop production at the same time reduce

the cost of farming. The cost for plants fertilizer is expensive. Many farmers used the chemical

fertilizers but chemical fertilizers are not good. This is because the chemical fertilizers do not

build up the soil. Other than that, it also may decrease soil fertility. Chemical nitrogen stimulates

the growth of existing microorganisms, which then use up organic matter in the soil. Repeating

this cycle regularly leaves soil depleted. This may cause the quality of the plants to decrease.

Hence many countries have started to use integrated farming which is farming vegetables and

watering them with water from fish farms. This research was done to investigate the effect of

integrated farming on growth of palnts. We fed the fish in aquariums with two types of feed;

organic and chemical. We then water the plants with the water from the aquariums. To check the

effect of the plants on organic fertilizer, 5 pots were prepared, each of them containing 10 green

beans, 5 red beans and 5 black beans. Each of them gained different types of fertilizer which is

water from the both aquariums (with organic fish food & chemical fish food), water plus organic

fertilizer, water plus chemical fertilizer and the last one is only a tap water. The experiment was

conducted for two weeks and in the end of the experiment, the height of the seedlings was

recorded. As a result, the height of the seedlings watered with water from aquarium with organic

feed gave the highest reading. This research showed us that, the organic fertilizer is better than

the others fertilizer.

Introduction

Problem statement

Farmers in Malaysia are often faced with the problem of choosing a quality fertilizer. How to

solve this problem? Therefore, we have made experiments with fish manure as an alternative to

replace fertilizer. In fact, the farmers also face problems in terms of the cost to buy fertilizer,

especially medium farmers. How these costs can be reduced? Can it be reduced? This problem

can be solved simultaneously with the problem of choosing a quality fertilizer and by adopting

integrated farming. Farmers only need to use water from fish tank as natural fertilizer.

Aim of experiment

To study the effect of different types of fish feed on growth of plants.

Hypothesis

Green beans grow taller with water fed with organic fertilizer than chemical fertilizers.

Literature review

The agricultural sector is the most important course for developing countries like

Malaysia. In fact it is one of the most important features that differentiate status between

developing countries and developed countries. This sector was the one who had contributed to

the foundation of the Malaysian economy in the post-independence era at which time, the

majority of people focus on the economy was based on agriculture and mining .

In Malaysia, there are 3 types of farming systems that have been applied by the farmers

of shifting cultivation, plantation agriculture and smallholder farming. This system has resulted

in deforestation, extinction of forest and wildlife resources disrupt the forest ecosystem as a crop

reduces soil fertility and threaten aquatic life such as shrimp, fish, algae and seaweed. But in

countries such as Thailand and Indonesia, they have used the system in which meaning is

integration (also known as mixed farming) is a farming system with simultaneous Activities

involving crop and animal. The main purpose of integrated farming is so that's the farming

components support one another; hence, reducing external inputs. A very good example of a

Successful integrated farming system is the CIPAV system, developed by the Foundation Center

for the Investigation in Sustainable Systems of Agricultural Production (CIPAV). This system

typifies the success of Integrating and using local natural resources to produce tourism

commodities.

The advantages of integrated farming is minimize insects and disease problems, minimize

energy requirement, minimize the need for chemicals fertilizer and pesticides, maximize

vegetative cover to control soil erosion and protect the environment and minimize risks our cans

from climatic and economic fluctuations. '

METHODOLOGY

1. Two aquariums were set up and labelled 1 and 2. Aquarium 1 was for organic feed and

Aquarium 2 for chemical feed.

2. Each aquarium contained three fish. These fish were fed on the feeds specified above.

3. For the plants, five bottles were cut into half horizontally.

4. Each bottle was lined with cottons. Ten green beans seeds, five red beans seeds, and five

black beans seeds were placed in each bottle.

5. The bottles were labelled A, B, C, D, and E.

6. The labels are for:

A Watered with water from Aquarium 1 (organic)

B Watered with water from Aquarium 2

(Chemical)

C Watered with water mixed with organic feed

D Watered with water mixed with chemical feed

E Watered with tap water

7. Every day the seeds were watered twice with the respective types of water. The

experiment was done in two weeks’ time.

8. Growth of the seedlings was measured using ruler and recorded in a table.

DISCUSSION

From Graph 1, it can be seen that out of 10 green beans, the highest number germinated is 7

which are in B and D. In condition B there are 5 green bean shoots that grew higher than the

others and 2 green beans seed grow roots.

In pot B, the seedlings are healthier and they have more leaves. Other than that, in pot D, there is

no leaf but the stem is higher. So, we can say that, maybe the water from aquarium 2 which

contains chemical fish food have healthier seedlings and have more leaves because maybe the

chemical fish food has macronutrients that is zinc, nitrogen, magnesium and phosphorus. And

pot D which from water plus chemical fertilizer has no leaves because maybe it has lack of

macronutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium and etc. And it has a higher stems because it

contain potassium, sulfur, calcium and boron.

From the graph 2, it can be seen that the highest average height of green beans seedling is 7.8

which are in A. Condition A there are 3 grew higher than the others, 2 green beans seed grow

roots and one of the testa green beans seed burst. In pot A, the seedlings are tall but thin and

leaves are not so wide. So, we can say that, maybe the water from aquarium 1 which contains

organic food phosphorus, nitrogen, iron and the other macronutrients. And the height of the

green beans seedling in pot C which from water plus organic fertilizer is the lowest because

maybe its lack of calcium, magnesium sulfur.

From graph 3, it can be seen that out of 5 red beans, the highest number length of red beans

radical is 3.77 which are in pot A and the. In condition A there are 3 red beans growing roots. In

pot A, the seedlings are tall. So, we can say that, maybe it contain carbon, hydrogen to make it

tall. And from the graph, we also can see that in pot B, the length of red beans radical is lower

than A. So, we can say that maybe it lacks carbon, hydrogen, phosphorus because if the plants

lacks of this macronutrients, it growth will stunted and poor of roots development.

CONCLUSION

Based on experiments that have been made, green beans grow taller and faster when watered

with water that has fish poo fed with organic feed compared to water with fish fed with chemical

feed.
