Paul recognises the boundless mercy of God who appeared to the one who had persecuted his own followers. Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) in an interview early in his papacy was asked the question: ‘Who are you?’ After a short pause, Pope Francis responded: ‘I am a sinner but I trust in the infinite mercy and patience of Our Lord Jesus Christ and in that mercy He has chosen me.’ The answers to the questionnaires may have exposed weaknesses and areas of need for each one of us, but we can have complete confidence in the God of surprises presented to us last week, who will reward our efforts and our mission with responses and changes in our own lives together with new disciples as we all become fishers of men. What have you volunteered for? At home? At work? In society? In the Church/Parish? What should you be ‘volunteering’ for? 3. FISHERS OF MEN

Two weekends ago we distributed a questionnaire in preparation for our Parish Mission in May/June 2019. We were grateful for your commitment and the excellent return and for your honesty and humility. A couple of parishioners commented to me that it was a little daunting as it reminded them of an examination of conscience or going to confession! But all of us need to be reminded from time to time of our humanity and sinfulness in order that God can do amazing things. Simon Peter in today’s Gospel is overwhelmed by the abundant supply of fish which filled their nets to breaking and the boat to sinking. Simon’s humble reply mirrors that of Isaiah in our first reading who was also aware of his sinfulness. Paul’s testimony in the second reading is the statement of faith that he had received; the statement that we proclaim every Sunday, that Christ died, was buried and rose from the dead in order that our sins might be forgiven. “I thank you for your faithfulness and love which excel all we ever knew of you” Psalm 137:2 Tina Quinn

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK: 1. ‘……. they left everything and followed him’ (Gospel).

What have you had to ‘leave behind’ to follow Jesus? Bad habits, selfishness, sin ……..? What do you still need to ‘leave behind’?

2. ‘Here I am, send me’ Isaiah says in the first reading. What have you volunteered for? At home? At work? In society? In the Church/Parish? What should you be ‘volunteering’ for?

3. When have you been aware of the ‘grace of God’ working in you as it did in St Paul (2nd reading)? Do you ask God to ‘grace you’? Do you seek God’s grace? Vincent Harvey

PARISH PILGRIMAGE 2019

St Paul brought Christianity to Malta around 60AD when he was being transported to Rome for trial. The ship

carrying him was caught in a violent storm and wrecked on the coast of Malta (described in Chapter 28 of the

Acts of the Apostles). We will ‘follow’ St Paul around the Island and visit some interesting historical places

associated with him. The Pilgrimage is planned for 8 - 15 October 2019, led by Father Vincent and Godfrey. For information please

contact Godfrey Doyle via the Parish Office, or see the brochures in the porch.

DON BOSCO CAMP: Portsmouth Diocesan “Don Bosco” Boys Camp 2019 – Fr Mark Hogan will again be leading a

camp for boys of secondary school age at St Cassian’s, Kintbury, from Sunday 28 July to Saturday 3 August. There will be plenty of sport, outings, competitions, fun and games to ensure that boys will have a fantastic few days. This will continue to take place within the context of the celebration of the Catholic Faith, including daily Mass and morning

prayer. The cost of the camp is £210 (part bursaries may be available on application). To find out more or to reserve a place, please contact Angela Mulkerns on 07764 761 006 or email [email protected] On Sunday 24 February, from 2pm—4pm at St Peter’s Church, Winchester, we will be hosting our “Bosco Experience” for

any boys of secondary school age – a chance for boys who have been on camp to meet with old friends and for those who want to find out more to have a ‘taste’ of the Bosco Experience. Fun activities for the boys and a chance for parents to find out more and sign up for camp.

CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME: ‘I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds and all

the wild animals’ Genesis 1:28-29 God has given us many gifts. Possibly one of the most amazing is the earth we stand on! But a little more each day, we are damaging this amazing gift, however, it’s not too late! Once a month, I will share a tip that can help save God’s creation. They are very simple and don’t take much

time. Here is this month’s tip: Did you know that an average bath uses 80 litres of water? That’s the same as 18 buckets of water! When you can, try taking a shower instead of a bath. They use a significant amount less than baths, saving you water and money!

Together, we CAN make a change! Bethany, aged 12.

FATHER VINCENT celebrates his 40th Year of Ordination on the Feast of St Joseph on Tuesday 19th

March. He will preside at 7pm Mass in St Joseph Church followed by a bring and share gathering in the St Joseph Hall. Please make a note …. do come along … A special collection will take place weekend of 9/10 March …..
