Value of fish production €286.4 million in 2004

The value of total fish production showed a very slight decrease in 2004. The valueof sea fish landings in 2004 was €180.9m, aquaculture was €100.5m and inlandcatches were estimated at €5.0m. See graph and Tables 1, 6 and 7.

The live weight of sea landings increased by 44,951 tonnes (17.0%) to 309,332tonnes in 2004, due mainly to increases in landings of low value pelagic species.See Table 1.

The weight and value of aquaculture production decreased in 2004 by 6.7% and1.3% respectively. See graph and Table 6.

There were 264,581 tonnes of fish and fish products exported in 2004 at a value of€391.2m. The corresponding import figures were 60,924 tonnes and €116.9m. SeeTables 10 and 11.

Finally, between 2003 and 2004:

� Sales of commercial and rod angling licences decreased by 3.3% to

32,279. See Table 8.

� The number of fishing vessels decreased by 4.9% to 1,436. See Table 9.

Background Notes

General This release has been compiled from existing administrative and statistical sources. It brings

together into one release the various fishery statistics that are already available.

Comparisons between sea landings and external trade statistics should allow for the differences

between both systems mentioned below. Allowance should also be made for aquaculture and

inland fish production as well as for any stock changes of frozen fish etc. and for trade outside the

scope of the External Trade statistics thresholds.

Sea landings Fishery statistics are collected by the Sea Fishery Officers of the Department of Communications,

Marine and Natural Resources. They are processed by the Sea Fisheries Control Division of the

Department. The Sea Fisheries Division are responsible for the transmission of the figures to the

EU statistical office, Eurostat, under the terms of Council Regulation No 2104/93.

Landings of clams, oysters and salmon have been excluded by the CSO from the figures supplied

by the Department. Landings of blue mussels into ports where blue mussel aquaculture farming is

located have also been excluded from 1990 onwards. In 1990 the amount of excluded farmed

mussels was 13,600 tonnes valued at €3.3 million.

Landings by foreign boats into Irish ports are not included in the figures.

Demersal fish are found on or near the bottom of the sea. They are often referred to as white fish.

Pelagic fish live in the surface waters or middle depths of the sea. Shellfish are of two kinds,

crustaceans - prawns, lobsters, crabs etc. and molluscs - mussels, oysters etc. Deepwater or deep

sea species for the purpose of catch statistics, are those referred to in Council Regulation (EC) No.

2347/2002.

Aquacultureproduction

Bord Iascaigh Mhara conducts an annual survey of finfish and shellfish farms. Figures on

production and employment are collected.

Inland catches The inland catch estimates are compiled by using declared or reported quantity data and value

estimates supplied by the Central Fisheries Board. The methodology was amended in 1994 to

supplement reports from registered dealers with indications from inspectors of what was caught but

not sold through the dealers.

External tradestatistics

The estimates for exports and imports are taken from the CSO external trade statistics.

The basic external trade data are collected and edited by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners

and passed to the External Trade Statistics Division of the CSO. The CSO checks the data for

consistency and then disseminates the final results. Since the completion of the EU Single Market

at the end of 1992, trade statistics with EU member states and trade statistics with non-EU countries

are compiled from two separate sources.

The EU-wide system, Intrastat, involves a direct survey of the larger traders and an analysis of the

regular VAT returns submitted by all traders. Traders not registered for VAT have no obligations

under the Intrastat system and their trade is therefore not included in the statistics. The Intrastat

figures include estimates for traders who did not make Intrastat returns and for traders below the

thresholds who did not provide aggregate inter-EU trade data. Non-EU trade data is still compiled

from the normal Customs clearance documentation.

Landings of fish by European Union registered vessels are not included in import statistics. If these

fish are sold and subsequently exported, they are included in export statistics.

Licences The Central Fisheries Board collate the sales figures from returns made to them by the Regional

Fishery Boards.

Fishing fleet The Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources compile these figures and are

also responsible for maintaining the fishing vessel register. These data are in turn transmitted to the

EU statistical office, Eurostat. The figures include vessels used for aquaculture.

Census of IndustrialProduction

The figures are taken from the CSO Census of Industrial Local Units. The results cover all

industrial local units with three or more persons engaged and relate to the NACE code 1520 -

Processing and preserving of fish and fish products.

Consumer PriceIndex

The Consumer Price Index is compiled by the CSO. It is designed to measure the average change in

the level of the prices paid for consumer goods and services by all private households in the

country.

In addition to the price indices, national average prices are also published for selected items.

Technical Notes Tables 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5: Sea fish landings data presented in Tables 1-5 are based on unit level

landings data transmitted by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources in

an annual report to the CSO. From 2003 onwards the Department revised their species and class

coding structure, to include a deepwater species class. In accordance with this revised structure,

some of the data previously published for 2002 under the heading demersal has been re-classified

as deepwater for comparative purposes.

Table 9: The revisions in Table 9 regarding fishing fleet statistics are due to changes in EU Fleet

Policy. As a result of this policy change Ireland has re-measured its fishing fleet and now uses GT

(gross tonnage) instead of GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage). In recent years Ireland has also

carried out two schemes for the registration of Inshore vessels. These were traditional Inshore

vessels which were previously operating outside the fleet. They were registered retrospectively

dating back to 1990 in most cases.

Compositionof EU 15

EU 15 includes the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg,

Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.
