The intervention was wel- comed by the Opposition, which has been under pres- sure to provide full details of its election costings. Treasury head Martin Par- kinson and Finance chief David Tune, in a joint state- ment, forced the Govern- ment on the defensive just hours after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had publicly ac- cused the Coalition of a $10 billion ‘‘fraud’’. Mr Rudd had launched a fierce attack on the Coalit- ion’s economic credibility in what appeared a last-ditch at- tempt to turn around Labor’s faltering campaign. Desperate to turn around public support, the PM and his senior ministers released a number of policy costings which they claimed exposed a $10 billion ‘‘error’’ in the Coalition’s savings. Last night, shadow treas- urer Joe Hockey said the in- tervention by Treasury and Finance had ‘‘destroyed . . . the last sliver of credibility Kevin Rudd had left’’. ‘‘Kevin Rudd has been shown to be a liar and his words cannot be trusted,’’ Mr Hockey said. But the Canberra manda- rins said the Treasury calcu- lations used by Labor were based on a different method of budgetary accounting and could not be relied upon.
