Results and Statistics New Archery Results Statistics System FITA is delighted to launch some features for results statistics of each archer on time for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As of now, media and fans will be able to access:

the history of head-to-head matches of two archers or two teams

the history of all the matches of one archer or one team

an interactive way to look at results brackets

Please refer to the RESULTS/Statistics section of the FITA website to access these new features.

For now, these features only apply to the recurve category and for major FITA events that took place since the Athens 2004 Olympic Games—this means World Championships, World Cup, Beijing 2007 Test Event, Continental Games and Championships. These features were developed by FITA’s service provider Meteksan Events. The database of results will be extended to other events and category in due time.

We believe that history of head-to-head matches between two athletes or two teams is an important feature in order to analyse the next match between these competitors. Please kindly note that the PDF results published on the FITA website (RESULTS section) are still the ones to refer to in case of discrepancies or incomplete data.

FITA hopes that these new statistics tool will enhance the experience of fans and media covering archery during the Olympic Games and other events.

Events Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Korea won two team gold medals and three individual medals (two silver and one bronze). Along the way, the Korean athletes broke Olympic and world records at the Beijing 2008 archery competition at the Olympic Green Archery Field. However, in the individual events, the Korean domination was clobbered by the rise of other nations with China and Ukraine claiming the women’s and men’s Olympic title. Men’s Individual On Friday 15 August, on the very last arrow of the gold medal match, Viktor RUBAN (UKR) photo prevented PARK Kyung-Mo (KOR) from winning Korea’s first men’s individual Olympic gold medal. RUBAN adds his individual gold medal to his team bronze medal won at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. PARK adds his individual silver medal won in Beijing to his two team gold medals from the Athens Games and Beijing Games. In the bronze medal match, the No. 31 seed Bair BADENOV (RUS) defeated the No. 1 seed Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX), 110-105. Juan Carlos STEVENS (CUB) was fifth, Ryuichi MORIYA (JPN) sixth, Victor WUNDERLE (USA) seventh and CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) eighth. The 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) finished 22nd. Women’s Individual ZHANG Juan Juan (CHN) photo broke Korea’s 24-year stranglehold on the women’s individual event, claiming the gold medal with the last arrow in a riveting final, shot in the rain, against the defending Olympic champion, PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR), 110-109 on Thursday 14 August. The No. 27 seed ZHANG had to beat all three top seeded Korean women to win the Olympic title. In the quarterfinal, ZHANG beat JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR) 106-101. In the semi-finals, ZHANG took out the NO.1 ranked archer in the world, YUN Ok-Hee (KOR), 115-109. ZHANG’s score of 115 equalled the Olympic record PARK set earlier in the day. YUN went on to defeat KWON Un Sil (PRK), 109-106, to take the bronze medal. Khatuna LORIG (USA) was fifth, Nami HAYAKAWA (JPN) sixth, JOO seventh and the youngest archer in the competition, 14-year-old Mariana AVITIA (MEX) was eighth. The reigning world champion Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) finished 19th. Men’s Team The Korean men won their third consecutive and fourth overall Olympic team gold medal on Monday 11 August. The Korean trio PARK Kyung-Mo, IM Dong-Hyun and LEE Chang-Hwan photo met pre-Olympic expectations in the ranking round by shooting the highest combined team score of 2,015 points. PARK led the Korean men with 676 points. The men’s team medal round was defined by nail-biting matches that came down to the very last arrow. In the gold medal match, Korea and Italy were tied going into the last three arrows when Mauro NESPOLI (ITA) shot a seven, handing the gold medal and the 24-arrow Olympic record to Korea, 227-225.

In the bronze medal match, Ukraine was unable to defend the team bronze they won at Athens 2004. Against the crowd favourite China, Ukraine climbed back from a six-point deficit at the halfway point, only to lose to China on the last arrow, 222-219. The Chinese men’s bronze was remarkable in that they entered the elimination rounds in last place (12th). Women’s Team The Korean women photo won their sixth consecutive Olympic team gold medal on Sunday 10 August. PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR) led the way in the ranking round, tying the 72-arrow Olympic record with a score of 673. PARK’s teammates, YUN Ok-Hee shot 667 and JOO Hyun-Jung shot 664. The Koreans combined score of 2,004 broke the 216-arrow Olympic record by 10 points. In the team 1/4 elimination round, the Korean women broke the 24-arrow Olympic and world record, shooting a score of 231 out of a possible 240 points in their match against Italy. The Koreans easily defeated France in the semi-finals, 213-184. Korea went on to beat China handily in the gold medal final, 224-215. In the bronze medal match, the French team needed seven points to win with one arrow remaining. Sophie DODEMONT (FRA) withstood the pressure to score an eight and led France to victory with a final score of 203-201. The Olympic Medallists
