There are some who say that there is not much new or innovative in the way of fitness equipment these days. In many ways, this is correct. Certainly there are the occasional new products that are introduced although many are infomercial type products that may achieve short fame but are doomed in the long term to be forgotten except at the garage sales of the future. However in the core strength and cardio markets – many of us are selling the same basic product designs that were around de-cades ago. Just the colors, cosmetics and in some cases brand names have changed.

But the fitness industry rarely stands still and in the absence of product in-novation comes an increase in pro-gramming innovation creating the many exciting and interesting work-

out programs that have developed in recent years. Crossfit, P90X, MMA, and countless others have succeeded by developing new and creative work-out routines that in most cases utilize the same traditional equipment (or no equipment) in order to attract new fit-ness enthusiasts to their programs.

Every personal trainer has their own spin on these types of workouts and how they are structured, however for the most part they all stick to a small group of common principals including intensity, variation, rivalry, and en-gagement.

Intensity, created generally through short intense and difficult routines interspersed with short rest periods is not only a major trend, but is also a clinically proven method to develop better overall fitness. Crossfit utilizes

Page 2: Fitness and social trends are changing by the second. Body-Solid … · 2016-09-14 · get stronger but your muscles learn to adapt to the exercise and the same ad-vancement that

this extensively, however one of the more recent and interesting interpre-tations of this are a few new programs combining short cardio exercises (e.g. 10 minutes on a treadmill) with short strength or land based exercises in rotation. A local Chicago version of this (Shred415) has taken off and just opened their third studio in less than 18 months.

Variation has also been proven to combat the tendency for muscle mem-ory in repeated exercises. If you do the same bicep curl every day, you may get stronger but your muscles learn to adapt to the exercise and the same ad-vancement that you may have achieved in the beginning will eventually pla-

teau. However by changing up the rou-tine frequently, you get the maximum benefit both in strength and cardio – a concept the P90X has used to develop its programs.

Rivalry – whether with another per-son in the same room or your own pre-vious best – gives added motivation to most people. Lets face it, if you are not measuring your progress and compet-ing on some level, chances are you are not pushing yourself very hard. The in-terest in this is obvious as we see events like the Crossfit games getting major exposure in the media.

Engagement is the last major theme. Some of this comes from the creation of rivalry, but also it comes from varying

the workouts both in style and loca-tion. Trainers are taking their clients outdoors, getting in their faces, and do-ing whatever it takes to keep them en-gaged. Some of the obstacle races be-ing offered around the country like the Tough Mudder and Warrior Challenge are examples of taking a fairly mun-dane exercise routine or event ( in this case the 5K or 10K running race) and adding fire, mud, and a few other bib-lical disasters to make the event more exciting. For this people pay upwards of $100 for the pleasure of this torture!

Accompanying the above trends are increased opportunities to use online resources for support, workout ideas, and accountability for fitness. There

are countless fitness apps for just about any possible need. Your phone can re-mind you that it is time for your work-out, suggest what workout you should do today, and track how well you do on your workouts. Crossfit can trace much of its stellar growth from the origi-nal postings of its Workout of the Day (WOD) which over time translated into the expansion of the concept virally to its present format.

Similarly social media is playing more of a role every day. Individuals who work out love to talk about their work-outs. In the old days it was around the water cooler or at home or the bar. To-day, the posts and tweets are going out real time as the workout progresses. The active social media climate will tell you that your cousin hit Zumba 4 times last week, went with a bunch of her girlfriends each time and that she loves a couple of her trainers a lot – telling you more about Zumba and your cous-in than you probably want to know, but also encouraging you to think about trying Zumba – or unfriending your cousin.

Finally we see many adaptations of training in specific environments as we have in the past as well. Surf Zumba may never have quite gained traction, but Surfset is combining a surfboard with balance training ad is gaining pop-ularity. Swimming is still popular, but for those of you who want to do a tradi-tional land based workout still, then do it in the water through some of the new aqua based equipment and programs designed to be specifically used in the water. Apparently we also now have Piloga – Pilates mixed with Yoga.

While most of these new programs will not survive beyond a few months or years, they do still rely on good sol-id principles of fitness building and the survivors really will be the ones who do the best to package and expand knowl-edge of their programs through social media and other avenues.

BODY FOCUS

Body-Solid allows customers to take the guess work out of selecting the right equipment with Body Focus.

One of the more clever additions to the Body-Solid website recently is the Body Focus section, designed to help any user learn more about how to ex-ercise to achieve their personal goals. Basically, with just a few inputs and clicks of the mouse, any user will re-ceive a detailed list of exercises and

products suitable for their specific needs.

Upon first entering the Body Focus section, the user is prompted to choose between “Muscle Groups” (e.g. Arms, Abs, Legs, etc.) or “Fitness Goals” (e.g. Weight Loss, Flexibility, Rehabilita-tion, Cardio, etc.) that they would like to target.

In the Muscle Group section, the pro-cess is very simple. First users select their gender which changes the inter-active model picture between a Male and Female, then click on the smaller model with the red arrow around it to rotate between front and rear muscle

groups. Then simply mouse over the desired muscle group on the interac-tive model when the muscle is high-lighted click on it and a window show-ing the user the name and importance of the muscle group as well as Body Solid’s recommended products and exercises to target this muscle group will appear. Then you can click on in-dividual products to get more informa-tion. There are also featured exercises listed below the description of the muscle group that will take you to a video and definition of the movement. Use the back button on your browser to go back to the start.

In the fitness goals section, users who may not be as knowledgeable about muscle groupings or have a broader goal in mind can be guided equally as well. Users begin by highlighting and clicking on one of the listed fit-ness goals they are looking to accom-plish. Like the ‘Muscle Group“ section each “Fitness Goal” gives a descrip-tion and the importance of the goal as well as Body Solid’s recommended products and exercises to accomplish these goals. It is a great tool for both beginner and advanced enthusiast to become familiar with the broad range of exercises and equipment available. Body Focus can be found at BodySolid.com/body_focus/

Leather attachments and acces-sories have been around since the early days of strength and fitness training. Then they just seemed to fade into obscurity with the evo-lution of nylon and plastic, which were cheaper. But leather is back and its flying off the shelves. Seems like what was old is new again. We have seen a high demand in some of our core leather products, such as the Body Solid Tools leather head harness (MA307V), leath-er triceps strap (MA325), leather ankle strap (MA308V), leather dip belt (MA330), leather dip strap (MA310). Maybe old school work outs and alternative think-ing like the cross fit movement have sparked the resurgence. Whatever it is, leather is red hot! Rugged leather products are rigid at first, but they come with a soft

comfortable neoprene lining to add comfort during the break in period. The more you use leath-er the more it becomes a part of you. It molds to your grip and adjusts to your fit. Nothing lasts like good leather. All our leath-er products are adjustable where needed and they are put togeth-er with oversized rivets and du-rable double stitching to insure years of fine quality workouts. It might cost just a little bit more, but in the long run you’ll get your money’s worth! Make sure you include Body-Solid Tools leather accessories as part of your fitness offering.

Old School Leather: Head of the Class

Body-Solid’s website and other online tools are key components in our relationship with both our customers and the end users of our product. In particular, we are always looking for ways to enhance the dealer side of the website that has ex-clusive tools and content available only to authorized Body-Solid dealers.

One of the more recent additions is our room planner that allows the user to define the size and shape of any room and then hypothetically place various pieces of equipment in the room. The software is simple to use with drag and drop technology combined with 2 di-mensional renderings of the various pieces making it easy to try out differ-ent designs for the room. Once the de-sign is complete, there is also the ability to forward the information to our sales department for a quote. Whether for a large scale commercial installation or a fitness room for a home, this is an excel-

lent selling tool. An ongoing need for our dealers is the

huge amounts of content that is used to populate websites, marketing mate-rials and similar. The old days where we could email one or two pictures to you are no longer sufficient as many of the images and particularly the videos are too large to be sent through many email systems. The solution is our new FTP site (which stands for File Trans-fer Protocol) that basically allows you to go right into our extensive library to download what you need. You will need an initial log in to access the site but once you are in, the site is organized by equipment name and you can quick-ly and efficiently choose what you need.

Please take the time to explore both of these new capabilities – they are yours to use, If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to contact your sales representative.

New On-Line Tools for Dealers

Page 9: Fitness and social trends are changing by the second. Body-Solid … · 2016-09-14 · get stronger but your muscles learn to adapt to the exercise and the same ad-vancement that

Drive through most indus-trial parks these days and in-stead of finding unoccupied spaces for rent you’ll witness the impact of the largest alter-native fitness trend. Crossfit, Speed and Agility Facilities, Kettlebell Training, MMA Studios and Sports Perfor-mance Centers occupy those

once vacant spaces. The craze has reached the highest levels of professional athletes, and has even created its own sporting competition, The Crossfit Games, which takes fitness competition to a whole new level. Crossfit on its own is approaching 5000 facilities worldwide in 2013, and has

captured the attention of the mainstream population. It’s not just advanced or function-al training for the military, police and firemen or mixed martial artists anymore. Ev-eryone from iron workers to stay at home moms, teachers, and executives participate in these quick hitting, intense programs, using items most mainstream health club mem-bers traditionally would walk past to get to an unoccupied treadmill or elliptical.

As dealers in the fitness busi-ness, we understand this sec-tor; bumper plates, strength bands, weight vests and kettle bells, etc. traditionally yield a lower dollar invoice than mainframe cardio equipment and home gyms. However, it’s important to realize the big picture. The trend toward smaller tickets and more fre-quent purchases from com-mercial facilities, fitness stu-dios and ultimately consumer sales is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s creating more op-portunities, more repeat cus-tomers and growth in a cate-gory that had shown very little growth over the last decade. As the category continues to

grow and more unique exer-cises are developed to keep the workouts fresh and cut-ting edge, studios and fitness centers that are looking for an economical way to up-date their facilities and have purchased other items from your store in the past will be returning on a regular basis to re-supply themselves and ultimately their clients as they take workouts home. Using more economical equipment also makes it easier for the fitness entrepreneurs to open a new facility and offer lower dues to potential members, which promotes growth and awareness. Like many oth-er fitness trends in the past, Crossfit training in the home will have a big impact on fit-ness retailers. The “Crossfit” type equipment often requires less space than a traditional home gym or treadmill, bet-ter information and instruc-tion has become easily avail-able on the internet and with DVDs, which makes it less intimidating for consumers to bring equipment home to train. This style of training is so popular many big box stores are creating a special

section on their floors to in-troduce “Crossfit” style prod-ucts to their customers. It is also important to understand that this product takes some unnatural abuse due to the style of workout. It is our duty as retailers and manufactur-ers of fitness equipment that we educate our customers to understand the inherent risks involved with some of these unique workouts, and that they understand that a lot of traditional fitness products are not designed to withstand the rigorous abuse a product can receive from alternative workouts. Also the consum-ers need to understand that these workouts may not be appropriate for all levels of conditioning. As long as we take the time to educate and inform our customers on the proper equipment for the workout and how and where to get proper instruction on how to accomplish the work-out, we believe this will be a long lasting and profitable trend for our industry. Talk to your sales representative for more information how Body-Solid can help you take advantage of these trends.

The hottest two words as-sociated with any business online today are “Social Me-dia”. Webster’s defines Social Media as: “forms of electron-ic communication through which users create online communities to share infor-mation ideas personal mes-sages and other content”. We probably

all know what it is and we can find a “billion” articles, tuto-rials, forums and blogs about social media it’s benefits and the most effective ways to use it to grow our businesses. We think it would be great to search Body-Solid and find a “billion” articles, forums and blogs about Body-Solid and the people who use and en-joy our products. How better

to grow your business then from positive third party re-views and experiences from fitness enthusiasts around the world about the benefits of, and most effective ways to use Body-Solid equipment. Our goal is to get this infor-mation in front of as many people as possible by creat-ing an online PR machine using social media. We are starting by creating a social gathering place, the “Built for Life Club” where we can share and gather information that will help to enhance re-lationships between dealers, consumers and Body-Solid, beyond just equipment pur-chases. We want to provide a forum where people can share ideas, likes and dislikes, exer-cise and nutrition tips, as well as their personal experience with our products.

A social atmosphere, where our dealers can step out from behind the sales counter and share their experiences and fitness expertise to build greater consumer rapport. We want to fill the Club with pertinent information, expert opinions and ideas that will

attract past and potential fu-ture customers of Body-Solid to participate in the cre-ative exchange and the evo-lution of fitness products and workouts. In addition we will be reaching out to consumers through a multi-tude of already established social sites. We will be scan-ning the web searching health and fitness blogs and social groups, inviting them to par-ticipate in our exchange. We will be making a concert-ed effort to reach as many fitness minded consumers through Facebook and Twit-ter, with real time posts and current articles to let people know what’s new and what’s trending in fitness, includ-ing Body-Solid product re-leases and any other news-worthy information. We will continue posting new prod-ucts, equipment trends, ex-ercise and instructional vid-eos on sites like Pintrest and YouTube creating fresh new media from information gath-ered from participants in our club and blogs. We will be net-working and linking between as many sites as possible cre-ating a growing network of information exchanges be-tween consumers, dealers and Body-Solid. We have hired a

Social Media Manager to help create, drive and manage our campaigns. Our goal is to enhance the total Body-Sol-id experience and to make Body-Solid a destination not only for quality fitness equip-ment but a place where fitness enthusiasts go to get answers, exchange information to help shape the future of Body-Sol-id products and fitness rou-tines around the world.
