FITOCRACY INTRODUCTION

Introduction

What is Fitocracy?

Fitocracy is a website that turns fitness into a game to help you improve your health while having more fun at the same time. You earn points, levels, and achievements by tracking your fitness activities and can share your progress with your friends. Throughout the game, you can complete special challenges, unlock bonus features, and compete with your friends in order to get to the next level.

To learn more, visit http://www.fitocracy.com

Using this Manual

This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the Fitocracy fitness tracking website and get the most out of your fitness experience. Read through this guide and you’ll be making friends, tracking your exercise, and commenting like a pro in no time at all.

This manual consists of six sections, each detailing one area of the site. Each section begins with an overview of the page, and then guides you how to use the different actions that can be performed from that page.

These are followed by a glossary of terms, the Fitocracy Code of Conduct, Terms of Service, and an index.

Welcome to Fitocracy!

I’m FRED, Fitocracy’s robotic mascot. I calculate the points that you earn from each workout. Throughout this manual, I’ll appear to give you hints, tips and suggestions to help you get the most out of Fitocracy.

FITOCRACY SECTION II: THE FEEDUSING FILTERS

Using Filters

If you follow a large number of users, and are a member of many groups, your Feed may begin to look pretty cluttered. The feed filters allow you to choose what you want to view in your Feed.

There are five filters to choose from:

Everyone

Clicking on Everyone displays the general feed for every user on Fitoc-racy. You can scroll through and see other’s workouts and accomplish-ments. This is a great way to find new friends and exercise inspiration.

Your Friends

Clicking on Your Friends will filter the feed to only the people you follow. You’ll see their status updates, items they’ve re-shared from other people, posts to their friends, and posts to public groups. It’s a great way to learn about new groups and pick up tips you might have missed otherwise.

FITOCRACY SECTION III: YOUTHE YOU SCREEN

Section III: You

Everything a Fitocrat has accomplished on Fitocracy lives on their user profile page. This is where you can tell other Fitocrats as much, or as little, as you would like about yourself. This is also where you can see all of the Achievements and Quests you’ve completed.

The You Screen

Navigation on this screen is done by selecting the links on the left hand navigation frame just below your profile picture.

FITOCRACY SECTION III: YOUTHE YOU SCREEN

About Me

What’s your story? Second to your profile picture, your biography is the next most effective way to pick up followers. By default, your About Me section will say ‘Want to know something about me? Just ask’, but that’s boring. Tell other users about your interests, your fitness goals, or just a bit about who you are.

1. To write your biography in the About Me section, click on the text Want to know something about me? Just ask!.

2. When you finish writing, click the Ok button.

You can even include web links in your bio. Simply write, or copy and paste the web address, and we’ll change it into a link for you.

This is a great way to share up a fitness log from another site, your workout plan, or anything else you’d like to share.

Feed

Selecting the Feed link displays your Feed filtered to only display your post and activity history. This is identical to using the Just You filter on the Feed page as discussed earlier.

Friends

This displays a list of the friends you follow and those following you. It displays their user profile picture, username and Fitocracy level, their bio, and whether or not you are following them.

If you are following them, you will see a green check mark. If you are not following them, a grey Follow button is displayed. Pressing this button will mean that you will see this person’s posts and activities in your feed.

Achievements

Achievement badges are received as recognition for reaching a special milestone. They’re designed to be showed off so when you get one, they will be posted in the Feed, as well as permanently displayed on your user profile.

Your completed Achievement badges are displayed just below the About Me section.

To see all of the possible Achievement badges and their requirements, click the Achievements link on the left.

FITOCRACY SECTION III: YOUTHE YOU SCREEN

In Progress

This displays all of the Quests that you have not yet completed. To complete a Quest, meet all of its requirements by completing the activities and tracking them on Fitocracy.

Completed

Your completed Quests will be displayed by default. Completed quests will also display the date it was completed.

Performance

One of the most important motivators to keep with a fitness routine is a sense of progress. Your performance graphs will let you know how far you’ve come. Click on the Performance tab to track your development on different exercises and activities.

1. To track an exercise, choose an activity from the dropdown box.

The bar graph below the dropdown box will display the weight lifted, num-ber of repetitions, or distance traveled, depending on the exercise. It will also display the dates on which the activity was performed.

21

Page 25: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION III: YOUTHE YOU SCREEN

Only activities you’ve previously done and tracked on Fitoc-racy will appear here.

That’s a good thing since you won’t have to sort through the thousands of activities in Fitocracy’s database.

2. Drag the blue bars on the timeline below the bar graph to adjust the date range.

Mouse over the data display for more information.

By moving your mouse over any bar on the chart, you can see all of the information that you inputted when tracking your activity. For example, a running session on a treadmill may display the time spent running, the distance traveled, your average pace, the incline of the treadmill, and how many points you received.

You can also change the data display by making changes under the Options heading, below the timeline.

Below the heading are three radio buttons that allow you to choose what data is displayed.

All Entries

This option displays all entries of an activity. It includes every set, on every date, and provides the most detailed picture.

Max for the Workout

This option displays only the maximum value for each workout that the exercise was performed. For example, if you were tracking your pushups, it would display only the highest number of pushups you performed in a single set for each day that you went to the gym.

Personal Record

This option displays only the single greatest value you have achieved in a given exercise. It would display the furthest distance you have ever run, the longest you ever spent swimming, or the greatest weight you ever lifted when squatting.

22

Page 26: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION III: YOUTHE YOU SCREEN

Alternate Display

If the exercise has multiple display options, a dropdown box will appear under the heading Options, labelled See. Here you can choose alternate displays, such as displaying a running session by the distance traveled rather than time spent running.

Output

You can print out or save these records in different formats for use in different applications. On the right side of the Options frame, are two links: PNG and CSV.

Clicking the PNG link will display the current data display as an image using the PNG file format in a new window. This will allow users to save or share their progress with friends or family.

Why not share your progress and personal records with your friends on Fitocracy?

Read about how to post an image in your Fitocracy status under Posting Media, in Section II: The Feed.

Clicking the CSV link will display the current data display as text in the CSV, or comma separated value file format. The comma-separated values file format is a very simple data file format that is supported by almost all spreadsheet software such as Excel, or Google Drive. This way you can come up with even more ways to display and share your fitness activities.

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKTHE YOU SCREEN

Section IV: Track

The Track page is where you enter all the data for your fitness activities. Tracking your workouts is a proven way to improve your fitness so make sure to Track each activity on Fitocracy. On Fitocracy, tracking your activity gets you points. Get enough points and you may even level up.

We have thousands of activities in the database and are adding more all the time. With everything from aikido to zumba, you’re sure to find your favorite fitness activities.

24

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKTRACKING A WORKOUT

Tracking a Workout

Tracking your workouts is how you earn points and gain levels. Tracking your workouts on Fitocracy also allows you to look back over the progress you’ve made. We discussed tracking your performance in various activities previously in Section III: You, under the heading Performance.

1. Choose the date you want to track your workout for.

You can click on the current date to open the calendar view, or click on the left and right arrows to navigate by day.

Did you miss a day?

That’s not a problem. With Fitocracy, you can track a workout that happened up to seven days ago. Unfortunately, we can’t track exercises any further back than that.

25

Page 29: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKTRACKING A WORKOUT

2. Select an exercise activity.

You can enter an activity by using the search box or the exercise filters on the left side. Learn more in Finding Activities later in this section.

3. Enter the details for your exercise in the pop-up frame.

Such details might include the distance traveled, the number of sets and reps, or the weight used. Each activity also allows you to enter a note about it. This can be used to keep track of how you were feeling, any issues you encountered, or reminders for yourself

In this frame, you can click on the Detail tab to get the exercise descrip-tion, or the History tab to see previous times you’ve performed this exer-cise.

26

Page 30: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKTRACKING A WORKOUT

.

When entering dumbbell, cable, or kettlebell exercises, just enter the weight of a single dumbbell, cable, or kettlebell. For example, if you are doing benchpresses with a 25 pound dumbbell in each hand, you would log the weight as 25 pounds, not 50.

Some exercises have additional options for tracking informa-tion. Click the Advanced Workout Options for the activity to reveal the additional fields. For example, with chin-ups, you can record any extra weight. With running or cycling, you can add your pace, and heart rate. Providing this additional infor-mation generally results in more points.

4. Repeat Step 3 for each activity in your workout.

5. Click the Save Workout button once you're finished filling out each activity’s details.

This completes tracking your workout.

The Advanced Save Options link allows you to also save a workout as a Routine.

Routines allow you to pre-build a workout plan that can be loaded for future workouts. You can also edit your bodyweight from here.

27

Page 31: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKFINDING ACTIVITIES

Finding Activities

Finding activities to track on Fitocracy is straightforward.

The simplest way is to start typing the name of the activity into the search box and we'll suggest different activities that match what you’ve typed.

Alternatively, you can use the navigation panel on the left to see your saved Routines or filter activities by Frequent Activities, By Body Part, By Equipment, or Cardio.

28

Page 32: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKPOINTS

Having trouble finding what you are looking for? Here are some suggestions to finding the activity you’re looking for:

Try only part of the name like “press” and then scroll through the results.

Try a more specific term. For example, vinyasa and hatha, two of the most common forms of yoga, don’t appear in the results for “yoga” because it’s not included in the exercise name. You have to search for “hatha” or “vinyasa” to find them.

Try an alternate name for the activity; “cycling” instead of “biking”, for example

Points

You earn points for every activity you log on Fitocracy. Some actions are worth more than others depending on how difficult they are and their return on your fitness. For example, you will earn more points for running a mile in 8 minutes as opposed to running a mile in 20 minutes.

As soon as you save a workout, you’ll see a pop-up window that tells me how many points you earned for that workout. This is also posted on your feed with a detailed breakdown on exactly how many points you earned for each set of each exercise.

29

Page 33: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKPOINTS

As you earn points, you’ll see the progress bar in the Your Stats frame in the bottom left corner of the screen fill up. Once your progress bar is full, you will gain a new level. The status bar also displays you how many points you need before you reach the next level.

30

Page 34: FITOCRACY A BEGINNER S GUIDE - WordPress.com · This Beginner’s Guide to Fitocracy is designed to help you learn the ropes of the ... tips and suggestions to help you get the most

FITOCRACY SECTION IV: TRACKLEVELS

Levels

Levels are a way to see how far you’ve come with your personal fitness. Getting to the next level means that you’ve made progress towards your fitness goals and serves as a reminder of how far you’ve come.

When you Level Up, a badge will be posted to the Feed for everyone to see. Each successive level will require more points so don’t rest on your laurels.

Leaderboard Filters

By default, the leaderboard displays the scores of every user over the past 30 days and shows the top 20 users. However, there are several filter options that can help you make better use of the leaderboard.

There are two drop-down menus on the right side of the screen that allow you to filter the leaderboard.

Your personal placement will be highlighted with a pale blue background to make it easier to find.

Clicking on the second drop-down menu allows you to select from the following options:

Gender

This displays users of both genders.

Male

This displays only male users.

Female

This displays only female users.

You can use both sets of filters at the same time.

For example, you may want to compare yourself to only the women you follow on Fitocracy.

In that case, you would select Following from the first drop-down menu, and Female from the second.

FITOCRACY SECTION VI: CONNECTTHE CONNECT SCREEN

Section VI: Connect

One of the best ways to keep motivated is to talk about your fitness with others. The Connect page helps you find groups of like-minded individuals to join. Groups are a quick way to interact with Fitocrats that share your specific interests and to engage in discussions that matter to you. There are thousands of groups on Fitocracy that cover anything you can think of: running, lifting, weight loss, even groups about your favorite TV shows and surviving hypothetical zombie apocalypse scenarios.

The Connect Screen

Groups are hangouts where you can talk about your sport or hobby with other people that share your interest and have their own challenges that members can compete against each other. There are groups for just about everything so the first step is to find one you think you might be interested in.

These are groups that primarily focus on specific types of exercise, fitness goals, workout programs, or methodologies.

FITOCRACY APPENDIX A: CODE OF CONDUCTCREATING A GROUP

Appendix A: Code Of Conduct

Fitocracy’s goal is to bring a fun experience to all of its users and the quality of our community is a crucial part of ensuring this. Since Fitocrats come from many different backgrounds, it is important to have a set of community rules in place to ensure that everyone enjoys the Fitocracy experience.

The Code

In order to create an environment that inspires users to increase their fitness, there are some limitations of how one may or may not use Fitocracy:

• Impersonation: You may not impersonate others through Fitocracy in a manner that does or is intended to mislead, confuse, or deceive others

FITOCRACY APPENDIX A: CODE OF CONDUCTCREATING A GROUP

• Discouraging other users: You may not interact with another user with the explicit intent of discouraging the user from participating in the Fitocracy community. This includes any negativity towards weight, gender, sexual orientation, race, etc.

Breaking the Code of Conduct

By not following the code of conduct above, users are subject to the following actions: a warning, account suspension, or account termination. Multiple offenses will always result in a more severe form of punishment than the previous.

What should I be doing as a Fitocrat?

First and foremost, realize that for some, fitness is a sensitive subject. There are a lot of varying opinions and some people are sensitive about their body image. Treat people with respect, even if they have different opinions than you.

Keep Fitocracy’s atmosphere positive, friendly, and encouraging.

If you are the victim of someone who is violating the code of conduct, the first thing you can do is use Fitocracy’s privacy features to block a user. If the violation is a fake workout or a status, you may “flag” the post for us to review. You may e-mail [email protected] if you feel that the violation warrants additional consid-eration.

Use common sense when choosing your community. There are many different groups on Fitocracy, ranging from very family-friendly to those that are not appropriate for everyone. Make sure that you only join groups or follow people whose updates you want to be consuming.

Use caution when sharing your personal information. This includes your name, e-mail, address, etc.
