Just a few quick thoughts. I

really appreciate everyone’s

enthusiastic participation in

the start-up of this new five years of the

AIDPC. Speaking of “start-up” times,

did I mention how much I just love

bureaucracy? Yet, we all keep going

regardless! Also, I am very pleased to

see that we are engaging in the process

of becoming more of a “family of

professionals” rather than only co-

professionals. Let’s keep following

Howard Stein as he leads us to a

valuing of the human and social

qualities that are the foundation of

effective technical work groups.

As we go forward, let’s be ever mindful

of the main, overarching purpose of our

work: the improvement in quality of life

for American Indian people by reducing

health disparities. Health sciences

research is at its best when length of

life, quality of life, and human dignity

merge as outcomes. We are all a part

of this worthy effort.

walk with a prayer

listen with your heart

not only with your ears

heal wounds

do good whenever you can

the mesa is holy

the mountain is holy

the petroglyphs are holy

the grasslands are holy

the trail is holy

the unbroken line of sight

between where you are

and each holy place is holy

you shall be holy

for I your Creator am holy

and all that I have created is holy

walk with a prayer

every footstep of your days

as long as the grass shall grow

as long as the river shall run.

I’ve been chasing our dog, Ted, when he decides to zoom around the various levels of the house. You know that Ted’s “zooming” is about to be launched when he suddenly stops, plants his chest low to the ground, stares at you for a second, and then

blasts-off throughout the house. For some reason, it triggers a chase response in me, and so there we go until I wear out. I took a trip in the summer to Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton. I enjoy traveling the state and seeing it’s many sights.

My husband and I have been remodeling our house. We are finishing up the kitchen now, so of course we are planning for our next project. I think we will be adding more closet space in the master, to accommodate my shoes.

I’ve been busy working weekends on the other side of the Chickasaw Medical Center (ER, Urgent Care, Acute Care, ICU).

Three Sisters Soup

“Three sisters" refers to the wonderful combination

of beans, corn and squash—foods traditionally

grown and consumed together by many American

Indian tribes.

Ingredients

5 cups prepared white corn

3 cups prepared kidney beans

1 cup cooked pumpkin/squash

1 smoked turkey thigh

3 quarts water

several fresh sage leaves

1 tbsp/ 15 ml salt add tsp at a time to taste

1 small onion

Preparation

Boil gently a smoked turkey thigh in 3 quarts/litres

water for about 1 hour until the meat comes away

to cool. Add 5 cups prepared white corn, 3 cups

prepared kidney beans rinsed and small onion

minced. Boil gently for 15 minutes and then add

chopped sage leaves, salt and squash for another

15 minutes. Add more water and or vegetable

stock if it is too stew like rather than soup.

Three Sisters Soup is hearty and healthy.

although, I doubt be shocked, that diabetes is a

parasite that has invaded my family tree and even

the young are finding themselves at increased

risk. Perhaps it could be classified as a phobia,

possibly a sense of consistent looming; however I

do try to see it as a challenge. I will not become

diabetic. Not just for my own wellbeing, but for

those youth, my children, the nieces, nephews and

cousins alike. And yes, even those of not direct

relation but of Native descent, because we’re all

kind of in this battle together anyway. I want to tell

the youth, I want to show the youth that it is

possible to avoid the disease. To not let their

surroundings dictate their lives and that they have a

choice, a personal choice to decide how to live their

lives; either as an example, or as a statistic. With

continued effort and the good Lord willing, I hope to

be an example, at the very least, for my children.

Caddo Turkey Dance: Núh Ka?áwshanCaddo Turkey Dance: Núh Ka?áwshanCaddo Turkey Dance: Núh Ka?áwshan

The Turkey Dance is regarded as one of the most

important traditions of the Caddo people because it

celebrates survival. It is considered a victory dance

as the words to each song tell of events in which the

Caddo triumphed over adversity. This dance is

performed in the afternoon by Caddo women and it

must be completed by sunset (when turkeys come

home to roost).
