“ Good quality hair extensions can be hard to find.
Before you take the expensive plunge it is really important to do your
research so that you are confident you are getting the perfect product.
Unfortunately there is no standard for hair extensions and the market is
swamped with pretenders, so here is a checklist to follow so that you
don’t become a victim and get it right from the start.
Kind Regards,

UNDERSTAND THE COSTS INVOLVED
Hair extension prices vary from salon to salon so it is really hard to understand
what costs you are up for. Unfortunately the higher the price doesn’t mean the
better the extensions so keep that in mind. You will need to make sure you can
afford the luxury of having extensions, so ensure your budget can afford:
Initial installation costs: This service will be your most expensive. The service
should include: installation costs, cut and styling, and your new set of hair.
Reinstallation/ Servicing Costs: Hair extensions need maintenance at least every
6-8 weeks. Ensure you can afford the up keep of maintaining them.
Hair Products/Brushes: Using the right hair products for your hair extensions is
imperative. Using the right products will ensure your hair extensions perform to
their maximum potential.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
Before you start calling around make sure you know what you are looking for.
Establish what you want your hair extensions for: thickness, length or both. This
way when you call around you know exactly what you are inquiring about.
Before you start researching specialists have a list of questions ready to ask:
1. What method of hair extensions do you offer?
2. Explain your own hair type (fine, medium, thick) and ask whether their
method of attachment is suitable for your hair
3. What hair type do they offer?
4. What is the life span of the hair and how often would you need to replace
it?
5. How often using their method would you need to come in servicing?
If they can’t answer these questions for you, cross them off the list.

UNDERSTAND METHODS
WARNINGTraction alopecia is hair loss that is caused by long term hair
pulling and breakage due to very tight hair braiding, weaves,
hair bonds or cornrows continually pulling at the hair root. If
wrongly applied hair extensions are continually worn and
the tension on your hair is not regularly alleviated, scarring
can occur as well as permanent hair loss, leaving the wearer
with a less then desirable appearance they'll be forced to
deal with for their rest of their lives.
Scary isn’t it? Unfortunately it is way too common to see poorly applied hair extensions with
these results.
It is essential that your hair extension specialist is cautious of this. Choosing the right method for
your hair type is imperative to ensure you don’t permanently lose your hair.
There different methods available and everyone has conflicting
opinions about which one is best, so it really comes down to research.
Make sure the method of attachment is explained in depth to you and
that you are assured you getting the right one for your hair type.
Stay tuned for more articles about hair extension methods. We will be
going through all methods in depth and please feel free to write in to

UNDERSTAND HAIR TYPES
There are so many names for hair extensions these days. European, Russian, Virgin
Russian, Remy and the list goes on.
Let’s break this down
VIRGIN RUSSIAN HAIR/CAUCASIANA rare and delicate hair type that is so rare it’s quite
expensive. Authentic Russian hair does NOT come in a
packet and is usually provided as a custom order and in
hand made wefts. Prices are in the thousands so if they say
it’s Authentic Russian and doesn’t cost you a bomb then it’s
not Russian. This hair will last 12+ months and is silky and
tangle free.
Beautiful hair but extremely expensive.
VIRGIN SOUTH AMERICAN AND VIRGIN CUTICLEVirgin South American hair is more
reasonably priced than Russian, is
natural medium-dark brown in colour
and sold in its natural form with its
cuticle intact – provided it is authentic.
It can be bleached and coloured, is
silky, tangle free and has a life span of 12+ months.

Virgin Cuticle South American hair is Virgin South American hair that has been lifted or
coloured for clients with lighter hair. It still has its cuticle intact, is silky and tangle free
and has a life span of 10-18 months – provided it’s authentic.
Beautiful to wear, and a perfect match to mimic your natural hair enabling your
extensions to look as natural as possible.
REMY AND EUROPEANSo we are looking at the absolute bottom end of the scale. Probably 80% of what is
available in today’s market is European and Remy hair extensions. In some cases it is
called Russian, Indian as well so it is really hard to know what you’re getting.
This hair is usually Asian. As you can imagine Asian hair is thick,
course and straight. It is then acid washed to remove colour,
texture and the cuticle, then coloured and silicone coated. When
it is new it feels beautiful and silky, then after a few washes the
silicone coated washes away and you are left with a matted, dry
mess.

HOW TO AVOID BUYING LOW QUALITY HAIR
The best way is to ask questions and see examples. You need to see examples of
what the hair looks like after it has been worn for several months, not what it
looks like when it is brand new. Feel the worn hair and ensure you ask your hair
extension specialist to clarify that the hair is the highest quality.
We have attached a picture of what low grade hair looks like. We have removed
this type of hair from numerous clients that have told us that this hair was less
than 3 months old.

CHOOSE A REPUTABLE SALON
When doing your research, make sure the salon has a good reputation. Look for
reviews, social media posts (examples of their work) anything you can find that
shows how committed they are at offering good quality work. When calling them
ensure they have time to take your call and answer any questions you have
directly and honestly. This might sound silly but go with your gut, a women’s
intuition is usually right.
