Welcome to all our readers, advertisers and contributors. These past few weeks really have been the lazy, hazy days of summer followed by balmy evenings where we can sit out until late enjoying a glass or two of good wine. Heaven!

If you are about to go on holiday and in need of a really lovely swimsuit that fits in all the right places then look no further than our People Profile person this month, Catherine Farrell of Monaco Beach. Guar-anteed to make you feel good whatever your size and shape.

On a more serious note we also have an article by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) about what to do should you come across a poor unfortunate dog left in a car on a hot day (hard to be-lieve this still happens but it does) and we all need to be aware when we are out and about. Until next month………..Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Stroud Target 2050 Loan Your home is likely to be the most ex-pensive purchase you’ll ever make, and like all expensive purchases you want to make sure it stays looking nice.

Making costly home improvements is tough, especially in this day and age when money is tight. However, improvements to the energy efficiency of your home can save you money in the long term.

A new finance scheme has been launched by Severn Wye Energy Agency in partnership with Stroud District Council, to help householders in Stroud to make those sorts of im-provements to their home.

The Target 2050 Loan scheme allows eligible householders in the council area to spread the cost of installing energy efficiency improvements or renewable technologies over time.

One of the first steps is to have a home energy assessment, such as a Green Deal Assess-ment – which is a bit like an MOT for the home.

One of Severn Wye’s trained Green Deal Advisors will come out to the property to carry out a Green Deal Assessment, and the Assessor will consider both the property itself and the energy you use.

Following this, you’ll receive a Green Deal Advice Report, which will provide further information on the improvements that may be appropriate for your property and how much they could save you on your fuel bills.

Currently funding is available for free assessments for householders in certain circum-stances. If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, don’t worry – you may still be eligible for a discounted survey.

For more information on the Stroud Target 2050 Loan and free local advice on ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home and lower your fuel bills, contact Severn Wye’s Warm and Well advice line:

Call: 0800 500 3076 Email: [email protected]

Visit: www.warmandwell.co.uk

IMPORTANT: YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON A MORTGAGE OR ANY OTHER DEBT SECURED ON IT.

The Warm and Well advice line is managed by Severn Wye Energy Agency, a charity (no. 1083812) and not-for-profit company. Severn Wye is an approved Green Deal Advice Organisation. Severn Wye Energy Agency is a licenced Credit Broker working with a small number of Loan Providers. Loans may be secured against your property and registered on the Land Registry meaning that the property may not be sold or change ownership without the loan being repaid

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing

Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of

Join Meningitis Now for the Five Valleys Walk - Sunday 28 September 2014

This year’s Five Valleys Walk – Meningitis Now’s flagship sponsored walk to raise funds to fight the disease – is unique.

Not only is it the first under our new name since the merger of Meningitis UK and the Meningitis Trust last year, the walk also includes a one-off opportunity to walk through the Lynn Chadwick Sculpture Park in Stroud.

Normally for invited visitors only, the sculpture park is opening up to Five Valleys Walk participants to celebrate the centenary of the sculptor’s birth and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, as well as Chadwick’s grand sculptures.

Elsewhere on the 21-mile circular walk the charity is organising food and enter-tainment, including circus acts, face painters and music to make it a day not to be missed.

The walk passes through Stroud’s five valleys – Painswick, Slad, Toadsmoor, Chalford and Nailsworth – and is split into nine sections by checkpoints. Walkers can start at any of them, and catch a free bus back to their start point if they don’t want to walk the whole circuit.

Meningitis Now exists to save lives and rebuild futures by funding research, raising awareness and providing support to people whose lives have been affected by the disease. Help us help them this year.

Where were you born and bought up? I grew up with my family, including my Grandma and two brothers, in a nice little village in Cheshire. We were very happy until my Mum, only in her 40s, devel-oped terminal breast cancer, which she fought bravely for 5 years. Ever since, I have always supported cancer charities and the Macmillan nurses, who were so helpful to her.

What did you do after you left school? I was only 17 when I met my future husband, and 22 when we married. I had no strong career plans and so followed my Dad into banking. I worked in high street branches, then became a financial advisor. I juggled work with having a baby, and became the first woman to lead a specialist business division of the bank with a turnover of £100 million. Both roles gave me a lot of ‘management’ experi-ence, and the ability to problem solve! I moved into Nailsworth over 11 years ago, volunteered at the Tourist Information Office, and renovated and ran my house as a B&B for a couple of years, which gave me more time with my son, Nick.

Then I joined the County Council to create their economic and energy strategies, reported on the future of the local airport, was on the local advisory board to the Bank of England, did a little work in Europe, and managed a multi-million pound broadband project. In the midst of those work challenges I got divorced and was a single parent for a few years. Suffice to say it was a tough but character building time for Nick and myself.

I then took up an offer to move into local politics, eventually won a seat on Stroud District Council, and was briefly a nominee for the recent European elections – I’m a glutton for punishment!

What led you into the business you have now? By then I had met my wonderful fiancé Neil and, with his encouragement, decid-ed to start my own business. I had struggled to buy attractive but ‘curve friendly’ swimwear for an out of season holiday, and realised that there was a niche in the market. I worked as the national marketing manager for a new healthcare business with-in Sainsbury’s while doing my market research. I learned that many women find a lack of age-appropriate yet attractive swimwear. What they want is glamorous but ‘figure-fixing’ swimwear (supportive cups, tummy taming panels, cleverly styled, more flatteringly cut etc.) in sizes 10 to 22, and so that’s what I provide. I named my business following a holiday in Monaco, where women of all ages still wear glamorous swimwear and look stunning. They don’t just give up be-cause they are not a size 8 or in their twenties. The sophisticated French and Italian women treat themselves to a self-esteem boost with cleverly flattering and chic swimwear, and confidently enjoy the beach or poolside. So I set up a website to offer that in the UK! The online Monaco Beach cruise and swimwear boutique offers top quality at lower than normal prices. Most pieces contain Xtra Life Lycra which lasts 5 times longer, and gives excellent value per wear. It actually works out cheaper than buying several chainstore items, and has the benefits of high-end designer styling and fabric quality. What are your interests and hobbies? My other interests include the various Cheltenham cultural festivals, gardening, cooking, and seeing live shows. I have travelled widely including the Far East, North Africa, most of Europe, and across Russia. My favourite memories include a romantic meal at the Buddha Bar in Monte Carlo, the wonderful spice market in Samarkand, and a roof top view at sunset over the red sands desert in Uz-bekistan.

What are you plans for the future? Looking forward, I’m expanding my swimwear range with more sizes and ‘mastectomy friendly’ styles, plus accessories and beach jewellery as they have proved so popular. The two biggest and happiest events on my personal horizon are to proudly at-tend my son’s graduation in London next year, and I’m planning my own wed-ding for 2016. The choice is probably between English vintage style, an exotic beach, or a Las Vegas wedding chapel…wait and see!

Anyone who considers themselves a “creative type” or works from home, knows all too well of the dangers of falling into procrastination. A little from time to time doesn’t real-ly hurt and has to be expected, even the greatest minds such as Einstein and Newton fell prey to its clutches every once in a while. Although too much can lead you to be frustrat-ed with the task at hand and give up altogether – now imagine if Da Vinci had done that?! Here are a few hints and tips for the next time you feel a overly procrastinating period coming on and wish to shake it off.

Break It All Down into Steps

Mainly, why people procrastinate is because the task they have to do is too big or seems that way. However you can avoid this sort of thinking, by breaking everything down into manageable chunks so you can be spirited on when you make actual progression. For example, if you’re learning guitar don’t go straight for the Jimi Hendrix tabs first to learn. Start off with simple 3 chord songs and when you have mastered those, just keep upping the level of difficulty each time. Before you know it you will be rocking out “voodoo child” with the best of them!

Make a Schedule –And Stick To It! This is a great way for you to keep focused and on track. Every day target yourself to a list of do-able tasks, allot a certain amount of time for each one and at the end of the day you’ll be amazed at how productive you have been. If it’s a hobby you want to progressive with, make sure you practice or devote one to two hours every day to it. As the famous author Karen Lamb once said “A year from now you may wish you had started today.” Avoid Distractions Identify the things that make you procrasti-nate and get rid of them. If it’s spending too much time on Facebook, don’t log in until you have finished what you need to do. If it’s cleaning the house, then make sure you tidy everything away before you start the thing you actually want to be doing. Don’t give your mind the excuse to wander and start with the Hardest Thing First When you have your mind set and have a list of tasks to do, always start with the hardest first. Always remember to treat yourself for a job well done as well, as the more you associate achievement with positivity the more it will come easier to you and more naturally.

Unlike humans, dogs cool them-selves only by panting and sweating through their paw pads, and they can die if their body tem-perature exceeds 41 degrees. They can develop a loss of muscle control, and the kidneys can cease to func-

tion. The brain can also become irreversibly damaged, and the heart can stop. On a 26-degree day, the inside of a vehicle parked in the sun can reach 70 degrees in just minutes. PETA warns that if you see a dog in a car and in distress, take down the car's colour, model, make and registration number, try to locate the owner if possible and call local animal authorities or po-lice. Have someone keep an eye on the dog. If police are unre-sponsive or too slow and the dog's life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal and then wait for authori-ties to arrive. A dog showing any symptoms of heatstroke – such as restlessness, heavy panting, vomiting, lethargy or lack of coordina-tion – should be taken into the shade immediately. Stabilise the dog's temperature by providing water, applying a cold towel to the animal's head and chest or immersing the dog in tepid (not ice-cold) water. Then the animal should be transported to a veterinari-an.

After becoming a tree surgeon with a local Stroud firm, I moved to London and became self - em-ployed. Spending 5 years in London was a wonder-ful experience, meeting such a variety of people and enjoying the benefits of living in the capital - art galleries, museums , theatre etc. When working in London, I led a team up to 5 people with full responsibility for managing the logistics of chal-lenging sites. This involved dealing with traffic flow, crane hire, listed trees, overhead cables and restricted access etc.

On moving back to Stroud I have established my own tree surgery business - “Andrews Tree Care” making an investment in some of the latest equip-ment. I enjoy taking a pride in my work and building my business . High standards and customer satisfaction are my top priorities.

I am happy to respond to any enquiry of work and will always give a free quotation if needed. I have over 10 years experience as a tree surgeon and a wealth of knowledge to offer. I am fully insured and no job is too large or too small.

blueboxandtail is the new home for Play Therapy, offered by Petro-Nelise Sollé in a beautiful studio a few miles outside Stroud.

Since moving to the area from London a couple of years ago, Petro has been looking for a space to do Play Therapy. As a play therapy session might involve paint, sand, water, xylophones and role play, it had to be just right. When she heard that an old chair factory was being converted into studios for artists and makers, she approached the new owners (Anna Simson and Chris Roe) and was convinced that it ticked enough boxes… but that is not how the name blue-boxandtail came about, she explains: “Although the word ‘play’ is in my title (as Play Therapist), the work is serious and calls for dedication, dependability and confidentiality: trust is all-important. It had to appeal to both adults and children; to parents and to professionals who refer clients for therapy. The title ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ (Dr Seuss) came up and I liked the ring of that. The image of boxes, where I keep my play material, came to mind, so I coined ‘blue box’ … and then I thought of my dog Taylor who might ‘help’ me in sessions (canine-assisted therapy is a discipline in its own right) and so I got the tail - and that is the tale!”

Petro invites you to come and look at the space, ask questions and book an ap-pointment or a workshop. When you meet her you will realise that therapy can be very accessible and – as children communicate through their play – a play-room in a safe space could be just what a child needs to express and explore life’s happenings; to make sense of transitions, changes, loss and relation-ships…. blueboxandtail Open Days August 28, Sept 4 &11 from 10am - 5pm. Work-shop on Friday August 29: “What Colour is Your Day: bluebox explores feel-ings”; Sept 5 & 12: “Two Animals And A Piece of String: bluebox explores creative play”. Workshops run 9:30 - 11. Lovely refreshments and walks nearby.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.
