BOARD OF DIRECTORS by Donna Massey

The Board would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays. I think it is nice to see the lights and decorations on many of the homes. The social activities increase and people seem to be happier during this time.

The Officers for 2017-2018 are as follows:

President: Donna Massey - alteration requests, day-to-day operations of the Corporation, compli-ance with the rules.

1st Vice President: Tim Bara - sidewalks, roads, sewers, reclaimed water.

2nd Vice President: Kevin Pilsbury - Clubhouse, pool, shuffleboards courts, common grounds.

Secretary: Joanne Hannon - records, office sup-plies, rules committee, notices for Annual meetings, compliance with F.S. §718.

Treasurer: Becky Hoff - all financial matters, in-surance policies, investments, C.D.’s, bill paying.

Director 1: Esther Lehmkuhl - lawn complaints.

Director 2: Ralph Bornstad - paint.

The Annual meeting was really a disap-pointment as only 99 members of our com-munity attended. This is the lowest attend-ance in the twelve years I have been on the Board. I think it is in the best interest of the community to have input from the residents. On the Thursday immediately prior to the meeting, we still did not have enough votes to convene a quorum. PANCAKE BREAKFAST

by Larry Bassett

Another month, another successful Unit 5 Pancake Breakfast! There were many of our winter residents (snow birds) in attendance. We prepared a total of 199 meals and all volunteers worked at a busy and successful pace. Thank you to all who were able to help cook or serve. We even had a cook this morning who had never cooked at the pan-cake breakfast. He was put on the grill for pancakes and sausages and did a great job! December Schedule:

Set-up: Fri., Dec. 15 at 9:30AM

Breakfast: Sat., Dec. 16, 8:00-10:00AM.

Some of our regular volunteers are sched-uled to be away for both the December and January breakfasts. We need your help! If you are interested in helping us, please give me a call at 821-9299. Thanks!

BEAR CREATIONS

by Kathy Bortscheller

There will be no BEAR CREATIONS in

December as it would fall on Christmas

Day. A big thank you to all the volunteers

that make this project successful!

Any questions, call me at 217-9217.

MEN’S CLUB

by Mitchell Frommer, President

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family. The Men’s Club is still looking for a treas-urer; no experience necessary. This is not a difficult position; I did it for two years. If you are interested, contact Mitchell Frommer or Stu Medjuck. There not be a meeting on December 5th. We will regroup this month, and the next meeting will be Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Dues need to be paid at that meeting for those who have not done so. We're lining up guest speakers for 2018 to include Eldercare lawyer Sean Scott, and old friend of the Men’s Club Dick Crippen of the Tampa Bay Rays. Start making your list of questions for them. Have a happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you on January 2. As al-ways new members are welcome. Spread the word to your neighbors.

WOMEN'S CLUB by Judy Pustizzi, President We have so much to be grateful for -- I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. Our first meeting of the year was a big success. We welcomed back our current members, some new members, and a few new residents who I hope will join us in our fun-filled year. It was good to hear from Carol Zaborowski with her great health report.

Mary Brown, and her White Apron Ladies did their usual wonderful job of serving de-licious lunch of Grilled Chicken Caesar sal-ad and a bowl of yummy Cheese-Potato soup, and finished with a dessert of White Chocolate Mousse on beautifully decorated fall-themed table decorations. The Hospital-ity Committee is already planning our Holi-day Ham luncheon. Thank you again for all your hard work.

Barbara Hersh, 1st Vice President, intro-duced Dave Seobach from Sunstar EMS Ambulance Service. Dave gave us lots of information, and answered all our questions. We all came away with more appreciation of how lucky we are to live in a community that has all the life-saving facilities and equipment.

A big Thank You to all who contributed to our annual Food Drive. Kathy Kolb, with the help of Ellen Oskirko, delivered our goodies to St. Giles Food Pantry along with a $100 check.

Mary Brown, Chairman of our Card Party, presented a total of three beneficiaries for

our vote. She presented Family Promise, K-Nine for Warriors, and Helen Donelson pre-sented My Hope Chest. After much discus-sion and knowing that all three charities are very worthwhile, we voted to accept all three! So now we must roll up our sleeves, and get to work. Mary will have donation letters ready for membership at our Decem-ber luncheon. Ladies, remember if you have a new gift that you will never use, please contribute it to our baskets. If you can't bring yourself to approach a business for a donation, remember you can always write a check to Unit 5 Women's Club, and those funds will immediately go to these three worthwhile, non-profit charities. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Looking forward to seeing our members and their spouse or guest at our Holiday Lunch-eon on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:45 AM. Good food, wonderful entertainment by Tracy Borgetti, a surprise guest, and a drawing for our raffle of ceramic plate, with a "31" bag filled with goodies -- Oh, what fun! Tickets are $10.00 and available at Koffee Klatch from Betty Harper, until the deadline of 12/4/17. You can also contact Betty at (727) 289-8165.

Mary Ellen Boudreau, Membership Chair-man, will be collecting our annual dues of $15.00 and can be reached at (727) 576-3015.

A BLESSED HOLIDAY SEASON TO

ALL!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!! HAPPY HANUKKAH!!

TUESDAY GOLF Cypress Links Par-3 by Stuart Hoff We have shifted to an early afternoon start time, and with the cooler mornings, appreci-ate the warmth of the afternoon. November marked the beginning of our “Trophy” sea-son, which runs from November through March. The trophies being pursued by our golfers are the Gold Ball trophy, given an-nually to the person with the most lowest net scores for the five months, and the somewhat less desirable “Oh, S**t trophy, which is given to person with the highest number of worst net rounds for the season. Stay tuned for standings updates. We welcomed two new Unit Five players to our group, as Laurie and Patrick Breen joined our ranks. Both of them have given every indication that they will contend for the Gold Ball trophy, since Patrick recently tied for the lowest gross round, and Laurie had the second lowest gross round of the women playing the previous week. Joe Sepic awoke early from his winter hiberna-tion to shoot a very fine round of 33 (six over par) that ended up with a net score of 19 (an astounding eight under par). Joanne Hannon showed that puttering around in her yard was beneficial for putting on the golf course, as she led her team to a victory in the Team Scramble, by sinking seven putts on the first attempt (out of nine tries). Doug Blackman won the first week’s Gold Ball trophy point with a very fine round, while Stuart Hoff and Roger Wojtarowicz narrow-ly avoided their first Oh, S**t trophy point. It’s never too late to get in on the action. Give me a call if you would like more infor-mation on our fun league.

THURSDAY GOLF Mainlands Golf Club 9- and 18-hole play Stuart Hoff The number of players continues to increase, as more seasonal residents make their appearance. Course conditions continue to improve, and the greens are starting to become much faster. So, if you find that you are feeling far too good about yourself, get off your duff and join us on Thursday late morning for a tutorial in humility, aka, golf. We have a good time, and you, too, may find – just when things look darkest – a confluence of unexpected muscle motions creates the perfect shot. You find yourself saying, “See you next week!”

lize and begin planting. We have not select-ed plants yet, but we will keep you in-formed as the process progresses. Multiple complaints have been received about backyard planting areas. Please be re-minded all flower gardens are the home-owners responsibility. They must be weeded and trimmed. If you are unable to do this, you can call one of the vendors and make arrangements to maintain these areas or you can have the areas removed. Thank you for your co-operation. The equipment in the office at the Club-house is a bonus for all residents. There are concerns about the care and use of the equipment. The copier is for a copy of a pa-per, not to make 50 copies. If you need mul-tiples, please go to a vendor that makes cop-ies. In that same vein, someone used the pa-per shredder and created a jam that broke the teeth in the shredder. All of this cost every resident, please be respectful of the equipment. To better maintain the lawn sprinklers, the vegetation around the sprinkler heads has been trimmed away. Please be careful when walking in the yard as some of these heads are deep in the ground and not seeing them could cause a fall. This hazard should be minimized after upgrades to the sprinklers are finished. Our pool is sparkling now after the treat-ment for staining. The geothermal heater was repaired and the temperature should be pleasing to all. Kevin is doing a great job at maintaining the pool. Contact him if you have problems or concerns about the pool. The Clubhouse and grounds will be closed December 13th and 14th while the pavers on

the pool deck, and the walkways into the Clubhouse are cleaned, re-sanded, and sealed. Refrain from using the walkways during this time. The refrigerator in the Clubhouse has again had issues. It is repaired now and seems to be working properly. We are addressing these issues with the manufacturer and will keep you posted on our results. The Board has several other projects in the wings and we will keep you informed as we get closer to starting. Please get involved as it is in the best interest of the community to have input from the residents. Our work-shops are open to everyone. We always lis-ten to the concerns of the residents and try to resolve the issues. Please attend the meet-ings, send e-mails, or call the business of-fice with ideas, complaints, or suggestions. Input from the Residents makes Unit 5 a great place to live.

PLATINUM BABES by Mary Brown What a great turn out in November for Plati-num Babes. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal at Speggtacular. Some of us had breakfast, and some ordered lunch. In December, we will go to The Crafted Plate. A sign up sheet is in the hallway of the club house. Also posted is our January 2018 sign up sheet. We will be returning to one of our favorite past restaurants, The Lucky Dill in Palm Harbor. It has been suggested to me that we return to some of favorite places for 2018. We will

GOLF FUN DAY by Stuart Hoff Save this date: Sunday, January 28, 2018. The week previous to the Super Bowl is the perfect time for our annual 4-person Scram-ble at Cypress Links, the par-3 golf course located at 875 62nd Avenue NE, right in front of Mangrove Bay Golf Course. There will be a putting contest, team competition for nine holes, closest to the pin and long putt contests, followed by food and drink at the Unit Five Clubhouse. You may enter as an individual and be placed on a team, as a couple, or create your own 4-person group. In years past, we have had 72 golfers partic-ipate, and the shrieks of joy almost drowned out the groans of agony. If you want to be a part of this wonderful event, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected], or call me at 579-4060. SHUFFLEBOARD by Mary Allmeyer Our first shuffleboard league game of the 2017-2018 season was held at Eldorado on Nov. 9th. Happy to report we won 17-15. Welcome to Charlie Wolynski. He is not new to shuffleboard but is a new member of our Mainlands Unit 5 team. Charlie also won his first games and we are fortunate to have him. There have been changes in the Friendly League with new rules and regulations. It took some adjusting to accommodate the

new schedule for our eight teams. Thanks to Kevin Pillsbury and his crew for washing our courts. It was a much needed job and well done.

have four new restaurants and eight old-ies. We’ll be going to places such as: Lucky Lobster, Bon Appetite, Naughty Nancy’s, Olive Garden, to name of few of our oldies and new places such as The Friendly Fisherman and Harvey’s. More to come in January’s Forum.

$$$$ Financial Information $$$$ by Becky Hoff, Treasurer Please read this article completely and don’t panic. Unit Five has approximately $8,000,000 (based on the CPI index) in assets that can-not be insured. We have our agents looking again for an insurance company or compa-nies that will insure any or all of these as-sets. Those assets are as follows: Streets $1,107,000 Sanitary Sewers $1,190,800\Potable Water Mains $975,500 Storm Drains $975,300 Sidewalks $858,000 Irrigation System $713,000 Sod $703,000 Reclaimed Water System $34000. If we suffered a storm surge from a hurri-cane, which was predicted with Irma, we would lose some or all of these assets de-pending on the depth of the water. Without sanitary sewers, and potable (drinking) wa-ter our homes are considered not inhabitable and will be condemned. Without streets we cannot reach our homes. If we cannot find a way to insure some of these assets, we need to start saving more money toward their replacement. $$
