This is a general Android Tip/Fix for Corrupt Contacts or Contacts Not Syncing
Recently, some colleagues in the US received OS updates to their Android Phones, which in turn caused problems for
several of them where their Google Contacts stopped syncing to their phones.
This is typically a problem of “corrupt contacts” on the device, and provided all your contacts are in the Cloud, the fix is
fast and easy (and I’ve blogged about it back in November 2012…. so I am quite familiar with this)
If the contacts appear OK in Google – via the web-browser, we will simply go into the Android Contacts and “clear the
cache” and let it rebuild/resync from Google.
1. From the main screen, press MENU key–Settings
2. Select Application Manager (or Applications)
3. Using the tabs at the top for ALL (apps), find “Contacts Storage” (NOT “Contacts”), select it, then choose “Clear Data”and OK.
4. Go into your contacts and they should start to sync (or check the Account Properties for the Google Account and doa sync)
Happy Android Phone Use!

Hi there! Quick question that’s totally off topic. Do you know how to make
your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when viewing from my iphone.
I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to resolve this issue.
If you have any recommendations, please share. Appreciate it!

what if its the opposite? I mean what if it appears fine on the phone but I cant find it on my gmail contacts?

Justin Gale says: May 15, 2014 at 4:21 am
Sara,
It means one of two things…
1) Your contacts are not syncing to Google due to some kind of error
Check Menu->Settings->Accounts->Google and you should be able to see if the contacts are
syncing or not.
If your phone has not been restarted in a while…try a restart of your phone and check again as
a easy and safe thing to do.
2) You have been entering your contacts directly into the phone’s internal storage versus a
“syncing” Gmail contact list.
Depending on the phone and version of Android, this can kinda be checked by looking on your
phone at the various contacts, and looking for little G icons by them for Google, Facebook icons,
LinkedIn icons, etc. It may also be visible only when you open the contact. Note, this is not
about what is their address, rather which system they are syncing to/from. Most Android
phones will let you copy the contact to things like “Google”…though sometimes it is contact by
contact, and if you are really lucky, you can do it multiple contacts at a time.
Let us know!
-Justin

Sara,
If they have not synced by now to Google…they are likely on the phone only. You can
probably use this video as a guide on how to export them on the phone to a file, then
email them to yourself, and import them (via the PC) into Google.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem when I bought a Samsung J1. I previously owned a LG
phone, which had stopped syncing, or it synced some contacts leaving out others.
This means that I had many contacts on my LG phone that were not copied to my
gmail account.
I had to copy all my contacts to my new Samsung J1 phone. I tried reading many
forums on this issue, but I was unsuccessful in syncing my contacts. However, in this
process I learned how to maneuver through the export/import functions that come
with the android. Go to Contacts>> look for settings>> import/export

I am not sure if your phone system uses simcards, but we use simcards. Therefore,
the first thing I did was to export all contacts (from my old LG phone) to my simcard.
Go to import/export>> Export to Simcard.
I placed the simcard on the new samsung J1 phone and imported the contacts from
the simcard to the device. Go to import/export>> Import from Simcard>> Device
Note that a simcard only copies few contacts (around 200 contacts), thus, you may
have to delete the first set of contacts after copying them to your new phone and use
the import/export functions again.
Thus, I solved my first problem and I had all my contacts in my new phone.
I tried syncing all the contacts through the new phone and it did not work out again. I
concluded that this was not a problem created by a specific phone provider (I had
thought earlier that it was a LG problem), but it was a software problem. I decided to
continue trying out the import/export function.
At the same time, I discovered this forum. @You have been entering your contacts
directly into the phone’s internal storage instead of “syncing” Gmail contact list.@
This, I think, was the main problem I was facing, but I did not know how to solve it:
considering that I had a large list of contacts and I could not go deleting each on of
them and re-saving them while syncing to my gmail.
This time I exported all the contacts to device storage. Go to Import/export
contacts>> export to device storage.
I then solved the issue by now importing all the contacts to my gmail. Go to
Import/export contacts>> import from device storage >> choose gmail account.
Now, all my contacts synced with my gmail account.

Thank you for your great instructions. AT&T did a software push on Wednesday, June 18 that wiped out my
Hotmail contacts. Even the people at the AT&T store didn’t know how to get them back. With 350+ Hotmail
contacts I really needed to have access to them on my Galaxy 3. I followed your instructions and and they
are all back. You are a life saver.

This is how I resolved my problem.
Problem.
– started noticing that some apps were getting confused with contacts/numbers, like displaying only
number when the contact was on the contact list.
– So I decided to remove all local contacts on the phone, because after all they were all already in the
google account.
Since then sync stopped working.
Some research
– Despite having deleted all the local contacts, Phone was saying that it had 4 contacts stored on the
phone, but I could not see them (all displayed contacts were from google or sim).
After some further checking I found the contacts that were stored locally but displayed as on google
account and removed them. Sync issue persisted.

http://justingale.com/2014/01/fixcontactsyncproblemsamsungupdate/ 5/14
Final solution.
– Backed up local contacts + google contacts on phone to files
– Backed up google contacts from web page
– Disconnected phone from internet
– Went to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All > Contacts storage > Clear data
– Restart phone
– Verify phone displays only sim contacts.
– Then went to gmail, and imported the 2 files with contacts from phone and then merged duplicates.
Now sync works and I didn’t lose any contact.
Note that the files from phone contained contacts that were added but not sync since the problem started,
so they were never on google.
I hope it helps to others.

You are officialy my hero.
I use exchange for work. Since a few months syncing didn’t work between the server and my android
phone.
Only if I deleted my account on the phone, and reentered the exchange account, it performed an initial
sync. Every contact wnet on the phone. But if I entered or changed a contact, this would’nt sync at all.
I had no problems with pc, webmail, iPad, iPhone …
But this simple trick just did the job.
Thank you very very much.
Kind regards, Theo.

My contacts are always behind all the other google services in terms of sync date. I tried this fix and it
didn’t automatically resync. So I went to the google account setttings menu and unchecked and rechecked
the contacts line to force resync. Oddly, it resyncs and gives the old date for the sync date and the same
contacts are missing. Any suggestions for what might still be wrong and other things to try? I’ve already
done a factory reset but it still syncs to an old date. Running 4.4.2. Oddly, it seems to be the contacts that I
use the most that seem to be missing. At least, those are the ones I notice.
Thanks in advance.

I have a wierd issue – I got my Samsung G3 end of around July 2014 and when I just got it, it synced up
with my Google everything and basically pushed all contacts from my gmail into the phone. Which is great,
exactly what I would like. Everything worked fine until I noticed that I added an outlook email account to
the phone email app. Google contact stopped syncing (even though everything else did) and when I look
into Google account sync, there is something called Google People, but Google Contact is no longer there.
When I look into Contact app to “add account” there is only Facebook, something called LDAP and
Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync which wasn’t there before I added the outlook email account to Email app.
I did what one of your earlier posts suggested, “clear data” for Contacts Storage, and it did clear out, but
did not sync. so now I have no contacts. thoughts?

only way to stop Google pushing all random email addresses into the phone and then Samsung displayed

I have a brand new Galaxy S5. I’ve tried all of the options I see on this forum…Nothing has worked. I’ve
cleared data and cache within Contacts storage (tried this one several times). I’ve removed all my locally
stored contacts, removing my gmail account several times ( and always powering off the phone in between
fix attempts). Taking the phone backing off and pulling the battery. Still negative results… ALl of my google
elements are syncing except for contacts…Sync app data, calendar, drive gmail fit data, play books, etc…
Everything has an up to the minute sync date and time except contacts. Of course at the bottom of my
screen is the infamous “Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly” The maddening
thing is, I have a company issued iphone and I’ve added my google account to that phone so I can get my
personal email while on the road…and my iphone is syncing perfectly. I can add a new contact tp my web-
based google contacts and within 60 seconds I can pull it up on my iphone…My S5 hasn’t synced correctly
since I turned it on a week ago… Without any formal tech support avail from Google ( and there is from
apple) Starting to feel like the only solution is to go to Apple…Hate to give up but it’s not exactly like there’s
a game that’s not working.. IT’S THE FREAKING CONTACTS…One of the most important functions for a
phone… Any last thoughts before we declare the patient deceased??????

What kind of phone/os? Make sure you go to ALL after you get to Application Manager list,
instead of Downloaded, Running, etc.

Hello!
Every time I restart my phone, or turn the phone off at all the Facebook sync turns off and unlinks all of my
contacts. I was having issues with my phone since I got it. They did a hard reset twice, took it to Samsung
store and they Flashed the software. It was still doing it..even with out restarting phone or turning it off..it
would just delete the account. They then ordered a replacement phone and it now does it every time the
phone turns off or restarts. This is so very annoying as I have to link my contacts EVERY time..it’s a PITA!!!
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

This solution resolved the issue perfectly for me – I am now able to sync my contacts again :-))
I was previously unable to sync any contacts to my phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy S5. First I attempted
to sync contacts from my Microsoft Outlook desktop application (via a USB cable using Sansung Kies then
Smart Switch) and when this didn’t work from my Google contacts (via wi-fi).
None of these methods would sync the contacts to my phone, and I feel a contributing factor could have
been that I (intentionally) deleted all the contacts from my phone prior to syncing in order to avoid
duplicates. Maybe this caused confusion within the phone’s contacts storage.
Anyway it all works fine now, so thank you very much indeed!

Update my Note 4 from android 5.01 to 5.1 and faced the vexing issue. Applied your suggestion and
contacts fixed right away. Lovely. Thanks a ton.
