upgrade to 285 tire s (Se e Off Road

101, Page 15). W e als o w ante d it to

be m ore aggre s s ive for off-roading.

But, at th e s am e tim e , our FJ is a

daily drive r s o w e didn’t w ant to

ch ange th e dynam ics of th e

s us pe ns ion or th e ride m ore th an

ne ce s s ary. W e de cide d to ge t in

touch w ith Toyte c Lifts , out of

North gle nn, Colorado to s e e w h at

th e y could do for us .

Doug re com m e nde d h is 3” FJ Lift K it, Part #FJ3-FRCC. Th is k it com e s w ith OM E front coil

s prings (providing appox. 2” of lift), Toyte c top plate s pace rs (adding about an e xtra 1” of lift),

and Toyte c “s tock ride ” re ar coil s prings (for approx 2” of lift). W e w e nt w ith th e s tandard 884

OM E front s prings s o th at our ride w ould s tay pre tty clos e to s tock . W e de cide d to k e e p th e

TRD Bils te in s h ock s , s ince th e y h ave e nough articulation to accom odate th e lift. W e initially

w e re not going to ins tall th e front s pace r, be caus e w e lik e th e ‘rak e ’ of th e FJ, but de cide d

th at w e w ould ne e d it w h e n w e put th e w inch & bum pe r on in th e future .

th e y did, as Angie & I h ad ne ve r ins talle d a lift be fore . W ith th e ir e xpe rtis e , w e w e re able to

ins tall th e k it in jus t ove r 3 h ours . It w ould’ve gone a little q uick e r, but I did m anage to s trip

th e th re ads on th e re ar control arm bolt. A q uick tap to re -th re ad, and w e w e re done ! I w ould

rate th is ins tallation as m ode rate . It’s not as e as y as an oil ch ange , but if you h ave th e righ t

tools and s om e m e ch anical ability, you s h ould be able to ge t th is done in a day.

h ub to float fre e ly so you can re m ove th e

coil-ove r w h e n it’s loos e . Be care ful not

to e xte nd th e h ub outw ard e nough to

pull th e inne r CV axle joint apart.

Coil Sw ap & Space r Install

Note th e alignm e nt of th e top plate studs in re lation

to th e low e r s h ock h ole be fore com pre s s ing th e

coils. Th e s e m ust be aligne d th e sam e prior to

uncom pre s s ing th e coils and re installing on th e

ve h icle .

10. Re m ove top s h ock nut by h olding th e top of th e bolt w ith a w re nch

and turning th e nut. Th is is a lock nut, so it w ill be fairly difficult to

re m ove . Note th e orde r of th e w as h e rs and bus h ings on th e s h ock s h aft,

both above and be low th e top plate .

Us e EXTREM E caution: Th e ne w coils are large r and w ill be m ore difficult to

com pre s s.

16. Tigh te n top s h ock bolt to prope r torq ue

spe cifications.

17. Be fore uncom pre s s ing th e coil, e nsure th at one of th e

top plate bolts line s up EXACTLY as note d in ste p 8

above . If th e alignm e nt is off, you’ll ne e d to re com pre s s

th e spring to re -align.

18. Install th e ne w coilove r in th e FJ, re ve rs ing th e Front Disas s e m bly instructions.

Ensure all bolts are torq ue d to prope r spe cifications. Follow th e sam e proce dure s for

th e oth e r s ide .

Re ar Coil Spring Install

19 . Re m ove four bolts to re le as e th e re ar sw ay

21. Rais e th e re ar axle w ith a floor jack to com pre s s th e

spring and loos e n th e s h ock .

stock spring to slide out.

24. Re m ove th e spring bum p stop

and place it in th e ne w spring

25. Slide th e ne w coil into place .

You m ay h ave to rais e th e

oppos ite s ide m ore and/or pry

th e spring onto th e bum pstop.

Once th e spring is in, rais e th e

axle and e nsure it s e ats prope rly

on th e top s ide of th e coil.

26. Rais e th e axle on th e s ide your w ork ing on to ge t th e s h ock back onto th e low e r

m ount.

27. Re place nut on th e low e r s h ock m ount & tigh te n to prope r torq ue spe cification.

28. Re pe at ste ps 5-9 for th e oth e r s ide .

29 . Re -attach sw ay bar.

30. Re install th e tire s/w h e e ls and torq ue dow n all bolts and lug nuts.

Re ch e ck all of your bolts and nuts afte r 15 m ile s and pe riodically th e re afte r.
