He has 10 years of experience in web development & graphic design.

He primarily works with CMS applications like Wordpress, Magento, Drupal and Joomla...but is old school and can hand code some HTML like no one's business!

Richard Brown doesn't do websites – he does sales.

So, you did it!

You downloaded the best e-commerce plugin for Wordpress available today, and you have now purchased the definitive guide to installing and managing that plugin.

Great start!

This guide has been written in sections and we have colour coded some of the sections to further make it as clear as possible:

General sections will have a white background with black text.

Really important sections will have a green background and white text.

Critical sections will have a red background with black text.

Optional sections will have an grey background with white text.

We both run websites based on this plugin (Welsh Farm Organics and S -Tastic Designs are examples of just two), so we are writing this guide in relation to actually having been there and done it!

What this plugin will and wont do

Will do:1. turn your wordpress installation into a fully functioning online store

2. give you a powerful way to list your merchandise or services on the single most effective CMS that you can buy (well – install – it's free!) Wordpress

3. give you a consistent and effective presentation of your wares

4. frustrate you enormously if it doesn't quite do what you want it to do!

Wont do:1. make the sales for you

2. market your store for you

3. suddenly deliver a horde of people to your website

4. be perfect

We see lots of people becoming enormously frustrated because the

'plugin doesn't work' or

'I want it to do X and it only does Y'

Well, it is important here that we get a few things out in the open and clear for us all to agree on. So here goes:

All we want you to remember is that this is not a PERFECT solution. It is the absolute best solution that you can get for free (or a few bucks if you take some of the really useful Gold Cart extras – which we wholeheartedly recommend that you do).

There are a number of plugins that we recommend that you install alongside your WP-Ecommerce plugin.

These plugins are NOT required to allow WP-Ecommerce to function, but we do recommend them.

all in one seo pack (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/)

This is the pre-eminent SEO plugin for WordPress. It does nothing with regard to making or helping WP-Ecommerce to work, but we do think it is essential for a good quality SEO'd WordPress install!

Again - this is NOT an essential plugin, but it will help you to prevent the really annoying insecure/secure message in IE when you follow our instructions to SSL encrypt your checkout page.

akismet (http://akismet.com/)

Essential for keeping the spam at bay (there are others, but this is supported by Wordpress themselves and works really well!)

exclude pages plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exclude-pages/)

this just saves you having to exclude pages from your Wordpress navigation manually – much easier with this plugin!

Wordpress database backup (http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup)

There are plenty of ways to back up your database, but this is a 'set and forget' plugin that will just keep emailing you the most recent backup. Nothing to do with WP-Ecommerce, but we cannot imagine how you would feel if your thousands of products disappeared one night!
