Experience Level Intermediate*** Size Afghan: Approximately 48" x 60" Color block: 7!/2" x 7" Materials • Worsted weight acrylic yarn* (240

yds/100 grams per ball): 8 balls winter white #8941 (MC), 1 ball each pale orchid #8768 (A) and pale colonial #8863 (B), and 3 balls pale damson #8853 (C)

• Size 8 (29") circular needles (2 or 3) or size needed to obtain gauge

• Stitch holders • Stitch markers • Tapestry needle *Sample project was completed with Bernat Berella “4” yarn by Spinrite distributed by Cascade Yarns, Inc.

Gauge 18 sts and 28 rows = 4"/10cm in St st To save time, take time to check gauge. Pattern Notes Color blocks are worked separately. The body is worked, leaving openings for the blocks, then the borders are picked up and knitted. Color blocks are sewn into the openings.

Wind separate balls/bobbins of each color to work blocks. When changing col­ors, pick up new color from under old to prevent holes. Color Block Make 8

Rows 2–28: Work Rows 2–28 of Chart A in garter st.

Rows 29–56: Rep Rows 1–28. BO in patt with appropriate colors, fas­

Body On next row, CO 32 sts above opening.With MC, CO 188 sts. [Rep Parts 1 and 2] once, work from * toPart 1 * once, do not BO.*Work in St st for 3", ending with a WS Borderrow, pM.

Right side panel: Work over first 23 sts, place rem 165 sts on holder or spare ndl and continue in St st until panel meas 7" from marker, ending with a WS row.

Place sts on holder; do not cut yarn. Center panel: Join another ball of yarn at

base of side panel, BO 32 sts, work in St st over next 78 sts until panel meas 7" from marker, ending with a WS row.

Place sts on holder; cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew in color block.

Left side panel: Work on last 23 sts, fol­lowing instructions for center panel. Part 2 Pick up yarn at right side panel, pM and work in St st across all 3 panels: k23, CO 32 sts, k78, CO 32 sts, k23. (188 sts)

Work until panel meas 3" from marker, pM *.

Right side panel: Work over first 78 sts, place rem 110 sts on holder and continue in St st until panel meas 7" from marker, ending with a WS row.

Place sts on holder; do not cut yarn. Left side panel: Join yarn at base of side

panel, BO next 32 sts, pM, work in St st over last 78 sts until panel meas 7" from marker, ending with a WS row.

Place sts on holder; cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew in color block.

Note: Work each side separately. Top edge Continuing from body, change to C, inc 1 st at each edge of work every WS row throughout border.

Rows 1–4: Work in St st for 4 rows. Rows 5–8: Knit. Rows 9–12: With B, knit. Rows 13–16: With C, knit. Rows 17–20: With A, knit. Rows 21–23: With C, knit. With C, BO all sts.

Right side edge With C, beg at lower right corner, RS fac­ing, pick up and knit sts evenly along right side of body at a rate of 5 sts for every 6 rows. Work 3 rows in St st, inc 1 st at each edge of work every WS row. Complete as for top edge. Lower edge With C, beg at lower left corner, pick up and knit 188 sts across edge, complete as above. Left side edge With C, beg at top left corner, work as for right side edge. Finishing Sew in color blocks. Sew border corner seams.

Weave in ends; block lightly. ❖
