Size Child’s 4–8 (woman’s medium) Instructions are given for smaller size, with larger size in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to both sizes.

Materials • Worsted weight wool yarn (223

yds/100g per skein): 1 (2) balls dark grey mix #225

• Size 9 (5.5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle *Sample project was completed with Classic Merino Wool (100 percent wool) from Patons Yarns.

Gauge 16 sts and 20 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st with 2 strands held tog

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Stitch K3, P3 Rib (multiple of 6 sts + 3)

Row 1 (RS): K3, *p3, k3, rep from * across.

Row 2: P3, *k3, p3, rep from * across.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.

Hat With 2 strands held tog, cast on 45 (57) sts.

Row 1: Work in rib to last 6 sts; turn, leaving

remaining sts unworked.

Row 2 and all even rows: Sl 1, rib to end of row.

Row 3: Rib to last 12 sts; turn.

Row 5: Rib to last 13 sts; turn.

Row 7: Rib to last 14 sts; turn.

Row 9: Rib to last 15 sts; turn.

Row 10: Rep Row 2.

Woman’s only:

Row 11: Rib to last 16 sts; turn.

Row 13: Rib to last 17 sts; turn.

Row 15: Rib to last 18 sts; turn.

Row 16: Rep Row 2.

Child’s and woman’s hats

Rows 11 and 12 (17 and 18): Work across all sts in established rib.

Work Rows 1–12 (1–18) 6 times.

Bind off all sts in pat. Sew back seam, matching ribs. Block lightly. ❖
