About FLAS The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) Program provides grants to a select number of public and private institutions of higher education to enable them to offer competitive academic year and summer fellowships annually. About FLAS … Since its inception as part of the Title VI, National Defense Education Act of 1958 and presently as part of the Title VI, Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Program has produced and continues to produce a uniquely qualified cadre of modern foreign language experts whose knowledge significantly influences the business, government, and higher education communities.

Types of fellowships & amounts FLAS fellowships will provide a portion of institutional

tuition and fees, as well as a stipend •  UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE SUMMER AWARD –

$5,000 tuition, $2,500 stipend

intensive language programs. •  Overseas intermediate and advanced intensive

language programs.

Summer •  Intensive summer language study must be the

equivalent of one academic year of modern foreign language study.

•  Summer courses must be for a minimum duration of 6 weeks and include at least 140 contact hours of classroom instruction for beginner and intermediate levels, or 120 contact hours for advanced level instruction, to be eligible, subject to approval.

•  Students of Arabic should be aware of post study abroad requirements.

Eligibility A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he/she… … is a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States. … is accepted for enrollment or is enrolled in a program that combines modern foreign language training with area or international studies. … shows potential for high academic achievement based on grade point average, class ranking, or similar measures determined by the institution.

Eligibility And moreover… •  Undergraduates must be at the intermediate level of

proficiency or higher as determined by a language instructor in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Turkish.

•  Native speakers are not eligible for this fellowship. •  Priority is given to students who have strong

academic records in their major and their language area of study, when applicable.

Application process Submit a complete application packet by Friday, January 31, 2014; 5 p.m. including… 1.  Completed Application Form 2.  Official, up-to-date transcript. First year graduate

students should also include undergraduate transcripts.

3.  Any relevant graduate examination scores, e.g. GRE, GMAT, LSAT (Graduate students only).

Application process 4.  One page single-spaced Statement of Intent.

Applicants should describe how the FLAS Fellowship will contribute to their academic preparation and the relationship of Middle East language study to future study and career goals.

5.  Two Letters of Recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s work, preferably including one that specifically addresses language proficiency and one that addresses work in the student’s major area.

Regarding recommendations… •  The applicant is responsible for alerting

recommenders of the application deadline and ensuring timely delivery of recommendation letters. Letters may be delivered to the Middle East Studies Center or given to the applicant in a sealed and signed envelope to be submitted with other application materials.
