The Little People in the Painting

There wasn’t much in Grandpapa’s office. An oak desk, musty red rug with pencils

scattered on it along with scrunched up paper and untidy piles of invention plans on the

desk. It was dull and boring, but, one thing that took pride of place in the dreary room

was a pastel painting. It hung above the desk in all its glory. It was a painting of a

mountain with a rushing river. A bridge went across it that little people, horses and horse

and carts went across.

Little did anyone know that when no one was in the office the picture came to life! The

river truly did rush! The people actually walked, the horse and carts trotted along the

bridge and you could hear it all if you put your ear close enough to the door! But, if you

ran into the office to see them moving they were frozen in their usual places. It was as if

it was just your imagination. I assumed it was one of Grandpapa’s inventions, I wished I

knew how he did it.

I had asked Grand papa many times about the pastel painting.

“Did you paint it? Is it a painting of a real place? Who is the boy pointing at the river?”

Grandpapa never answered me, he just put his finger to his lips. It was such a mystical

painting. I wished I could dive into it and meet the little people.

“Martin supper!” Shouted Mama.

“Supper!”

Five minutes flew by.

“Go tell your Grandpapa it’s supper time.” Sighed Mama.

I ran down the hallway to his office.

Page 5: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

“Grandpapa! Supper!” I yelled knocking at his office door.

“Supper!”

There was no reply.

“Supper!” I yelled again.

Still no reply. I slowly cracked open the door and peered in. Grandpapa had half of his

hand in the painting! The little people hopped on his hand. Then he slowly took his hand

out and tipped the little people on his desk.

“Sir, we want homes!” Complained the man who held the whip.

“And a change of scenery!” Added the man riding a horse.

“But your scenery is lovely!” Cried Grandpapa.

“One has seen it for thirty years!” Said the lady looking at the river.

“I understand” Sighed Grandpapa

“I have an idea! “I cried running into the room.

The little people did not freeze. They just looked at me.

“What?” Pleaded Grandpapa.

“What’s your plan?”

I explained and the next day it was in full swing! The little people could travel from

painting to painting if the canvases were close enough.

Page 6: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

Grandpapa painted a beach painting, a painting that had lovely little houses and a boat

painting. The little people had a fantastic time adventuring through the new paintings.

That was a long time ago and Grandpapa and I are gone, but, in an attic somewhere there

are five paintings and if you look closely you will see a little girl and her Grandpapa waving

at you.

The Big Battle

Once there was a man called Archie he was 22 years old and was very brave. Archie's job

was to protect the king. One day the king told Archie to get me some diamonds "NOW "

Cave of Diamonds

"Hello" I stretched, as I got out of bed. You are just in time for my story! Let's start!

"ZzZz" I was sleeping. I didn't remember I had work. I woke up an hour later at ten

o'clock! I got out my bed quickly got changed and ran out the door...When I arrived at my

work my helper Macy screamed "Tilly!!" Oh and my real name is Marget but everyone

calls me Tilly.

"There's NO Gold ,silver or even a PENNY in the agency!" I was shocked by what Macy

said because I was quite rich.

"It was ROBBED" she screamed "we need to find the most money we can get.

"Then what are we waiting for let's go" I jumped as I said that.

We jumped in our horse and carriage and looked at our map. It was too extreme and

huge to see! When night came we had nowhere to sleep .No cave found. No guest house

seen .We had to sleep in the carriage. Days past night by night day by day, we found

nothing only bread to eat and water to drink. Me and Macy felt homesick. We were on

the road too long. We went on, not even thinking about going home. We found a guest

house! “Horray!” We both screamed. We both had pink faces with delight! Also we spent

a night and day in the guest house. Worrying wasn’t a thing anymore we were just

excited to get back on the road. A week later we found a waterfall! Full and very busy

with poor, rich , old , poor! We rushed inside the cave...

The waterfall , cave and all the colours were beautiful....It went pick black! “AHH!” We

both set candles. It was fine now. We walked more and more into the cave and saw

DIAMONDS AND GOLD! We touched the diamonds and BOOM! It went black.

We were lost in the darkness. No light at all I and Macy were getting more nervous and

more nervous ..Until we felt water. The water was light blue as light as the sky. We also

felt gold and diamonds in our bags! I slowly swam out of the waterfall while Macy ran.

With delight. Gold , iron , money and even diamonds emeralds and silver were put on the

carriages. The waterfall was magical! We were nearly home by 5:00 as the carriage shifted

from side to side.

“Our boss is going to be so happy!” Macy squealed “it will be worth the wait!” we entered

our town and by the way our town is called Remisare. The whole town said “YAY HORRAY

Page 9: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

WELL DONE!” And we were so proud and Macy was over-reacting! Are bosses were

amazed! Everyone was open mouthed and never poor again!

And we lived happily ever after!

Wee Village in The Highlands

Introduction

Tom and Clair were rock climbers, Clair came from a sickeningly posh family (even worse

than a sugary jam-packed Curtis candy that you get in Florida) although, meanwhile, Tom

came from a more outdoorsie family. Even though different they both share a love for

rock climbing.

Chapter 1

The jump

Once they were doing there hobby in “The Highlands” when they came across a jaw

dropping site! A stunning waterfall, with water as pure as a maiden, as sparkly as the sun

fell on them, it felt bewitching! Soon they stopped staring at the miraculous site to get

their gear ready to jump down the cliff next to it……..

“Oh my!”

Slobbered an amazed Tom and a amazed Clair, although, they knew they wanted to jump

down so they got their rock climbing gear ready let go from the stunning edge. Nerves

were kicking in now, especially for Tom but the wind blew and both Clair and Tom fell.

Bouncing off the cliff wall soon they were half way when they stopped on an open ledge

for a water break as the poor things were exhausted. Later, their energy was reclaimed so

now a less scared Tom carried on down with Clair until they reached the bottom to find

an old wreaked bridge……

Chapter 2

Wee civilisation

The bridge was so old that a shame because it looked so beautiful next to the waterfall.

Soon helmets and harnesses were off and left beside the cliff face, only bags with supplies

were taken across the bridge. As soon as are heroes have crossed the bridge it was

completely destroyed. “Oh, how shall we return home now?”

Page 11: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

Complained Clair but then realised there was properly a town nearby! After walking

half about half a mile they came to a lovely wee town hidden away by trees and cliffs. It

was so mythical and majestic! The town was un-connected, no tellies, phones, nothing.

“Wow, a 16th century village!”

Said Clair.

Chapter 3

Rebuilding and recreation

Tom and Clair now know all the villagers after studying and learning about them for a few

months. New customs and houses were becoming popular, the town bell was finally

fixed too! Finally the bridge was fixed. Everything was going splendid until one night……..

Chapter 4

The loss

One night a Kayly was held in honour of Tom and Clair. Everybody was enjoying

themselves apart from Mr Macie. He was such an old grouch! After it was all over

everybody went into the town hall to find Mrs Twa was assassinated plus Mr Macie was

nowhere to be found! Did Mr Macie murder Mrs Twa?

Chapter 5

Leaving home

That night in secret all the villagers (apart from Mr Macie) left in handmade horse drawn

carriages. Soon they found a new home to build a new village there. With help From Tom

and Clair the new village was like the old one. Tom and Clair went back home but still visit

the village now and then to add more customs.

The Journey to the Waterfall

Once in 1891 lived a young 19 year old girl called Emily who had beautiful golden hair and

eyes as blue as the sky. Emily was a servant of queen Victoria who wears blue and white

checkered dress. One day the queen asked to see every single servant to tell them

something. Emily was nervous until she said “we are going to one of the island on the

north of Scotland to get gold and diamonds and if you do it you get a castle all to yourself

!”

They all said yes

“We will start travel the week long travel tomorrow “she said.Eventally everyone got into

The carriage and they started traveling.

When they arrived they went to the gigantic castle which was near to the lovely blue

waterfall that crashed down the mountainside and the tiny green cave where all the

diamonds and gold were growing. Emily and her friends went to the cave and found the

most hideous sight......a green monster roared at them “leave this place at once I don’t

want you !“

It gave them such a fright that they ran out. Then Emily said “somehow we must find a

way in ! I know how about going round the back and sneak in ?”

“Yes” they cried and snuck round the back and found a small hole that they could creap

through to the cave .They squeezed through the hole and slowly tiptoed through the cave

to the diamonds and quickly they grabbed them . Suddenly the monster shouted” what

are you doing here please leave!”

The girls ran quickly to the carriages and ran off with the monster righ behind them .

“We are back with the gold and diamond ” Emily said to the queen “good now we can

leave !”replied the queen “wait” Emily called “can we wait until the monster has gone?

We grabbed the diamonds and gold from its cave and it’s not happy.”

Page 13: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

“It will be unhappy, you stole from its cave, go and return them,” replied the queen.

“Okay I will,” called back Emily. When Emily arrived she saw the monster looking sad.

“I have come to give you back the gold and diamonds,” Emily said.

“Why? Well I don’t want them, I just want a horse so I can leave this place,” replied the

monster.

“Here, you can have my one,” said Emily.

“Thank you. You probably want to know how I am a monster?” said the monster.

“Yes.”

“Well, I was young and I was playing where the waterfall is when I fell in and because it’s

magical I turned into a monster,”said the monster.

“Thank you but I have to go but I will come and visit you every year.” When she got back

the queen was so delighted that she got a castle to herself when they got back.

Family Trip Goes Very Wrong

Last year on my holidays, I was in Switzerland with my family and my cute pony Lucy. I’d

never been to Switzerland before, I was really excited. The hotel was very small but

pretty, and was one of the top 5 locations in Switzerland. I saw a leaflet for a river in the

hotel. I got Lucy tacked up for the next day.

The next day I was very excited. I could not wait to get started. I packed my bag, apples for

Lucy, snacks for my family, my camera, a phone, a torch and a first aid kit. Our journey was

about a 25 kilometers. I took a photo of the beautiful view. All of a sudden I heard a bang;

Lucy got spooked and ran away.

Luckily I was still on her. Lucy ran for ages as fast as her legs could take her. I kept on taking

photos, it was hard and I was only brave enough when she calmed down. We stopped at a

beautiful waterfall but we were scared, homeless and where was my family? I started to

shout, unfortunately there was no reply. There were more bangs like a war was going on.

Lucy was spooked. I was frightened. We were lost.

I rode with Lucy until safe. I could tell she was terrified, her heart was racing. Lucy was tired,

so was I. My phone had no reception. I panicked, but all of a sudden I remembered the

photos. I brought out my camera. I started looking for the waterfall picture. I knew that was

the closest to me. So off I went looking for the waterfall. I looked everywhere until we found

it. We stopped for a sleep.

The next morning I looked at the fighting photo. So we walked in and out the dusty bluebells

until we heard people fighting and the bangs. Lucy struggled to stay calm so I got off and

led her. We were dodging the bangs, which were guns. I was making sure that Lucy didn’t

stand on my feet OUCH! We couldn’t sleep there, it was too dangerous. I got back on Lucy

and hid behind a tree. I took out my camera. Next was the forest picture. By this time it was

dark so I took out my torch. In the distance I could see hundreds of trees. We followed

them. We went into a cave and closed the rock and stayed for a night.

Morning came, we heard a growl. I moved the rock and we ran. The dreadful creature

chased us but we ran until we lost it. I recognized this beautiful view. I came to a building

Page 15: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

it looked like the hotel. Outside I heard my parents in the garden with my sister. Slowly I

said “hello”. They were so relieved that I was back. I ran to them. I had an experience that

I will never forget, but I’m back now.

I’m bored, bored, bored and even more bored, she shouted in her dark cold boring room.

I hate tidying my room she screamed. Her mum had told her if she doesn’t tidy her room

she’s grounded, so Taylor snuck out her window, and jumped onto the grass in her back

garden. She sprinted to the park with her Manchester united football.

Her long brown hair was in a daring high ponytail and was banging against her bright pink

sweaty face. After 10 minutes Taylor finally got to the park, and all her friend were there.

Taylor and Millie her best friend went into a tree and found loads of big point rocks under

a giant mountain…

Millie and Taylor started pulling rocks from under the mountain and after 5 minutes all

the rocks were out. Behind were the rocks were there was an entrance to a giant cave…

Millie and Taylor tiptoed into the cave.

Taylors jaw opened widely in astonishment of how beautiful the cave was, it had a giant

waterfall that made a loud gushing noise, there was a long brick bridge and a path from

the bridge to a spirally staircase. Taylor decided to go up the stairs, so Millie followed, the

staircase led to the top of the mountain. They could see everything, everyone looked like

tiny dots to them.

They heard a door creaking from in the cave. They thought it was the wind but they went

to check anyway. As they got further down the stairs they started to hear footsteps they

were terrified but they kept walking down, each step made them even more frightened.

They both had butterflies in their stomachs. They didn’t know who or what it was.

When they got down they were pulled away into a cold, dark, damp and creepy secret

room behind the waterfall. They were tied to chairs and were screaming for help, they felt

obnoxious and afraid. Suddenly the light turned on and they saw Millie’s dad no one had

seen him for 2 years and everyone thought he was dead. Millie screamed “dad, did you

lock us in here” her dad said softly “no I was locked in here I just got out”. A few minutes

later he let them out and they all sprinted up the spiral stairs onto the mountain. The guy

who took them followed. Taylor jumped on his back and Millie took off his mask. It was

their football coach.

Taylor asked politely “why did you tie us to chairs and take Millie’s dad” but instead of

him answering her he ran and no one saw him again.

Here comes another day of misery and boredom thought Stella. Stella was so unhappy

that she had to go to an art gallery with her mum. Stella was going to be so board. She

hated art so bad she would do anything to stay at home. As she slowly trudged towards

the muddy and scratched car. She kept hoping her mum would change her mind and let

Stella stay at home. But her mum said go in the car and don’t moan, now she was making

me go to the most boring place in the world.as they made their way to the art gallery the

car rattled like a fierce thunder storm. Stellas mum told her she needed to look at some

pictures. Stella looked at a lot of pictures and had to look at one more.

So she had a look at the picture but as she did she could hear some water she leaned

closer to it and heard it more loudly. Stella touched the picture and there was a sudden

flash. She looked at herself and she looked normal with all the clothes she had and the

shoes she had. Stella slowly walked outside the door and it was all different her mum

wasn’t there and there was a big river. It took a while for Stella to figure out where she

was then she realized she had been dragged into the picture she touched. It must have

been cursed millions of years ago when the stone were around. Stella walked up to a boy

that looked lonely. It was strange because before she could say anything the boy jumped

up and said hi Stella I am arcty. Stella got a big fright as arcty shook her hand like he knew

her. Well he knew Stella’s name he knew Stella’s age what more did he know. Stella had a

thought maybe he was an alien from the moon feasting on moon cheese. Arcty asked me

why I was here and Stella told arcty how there was a cursed picture and she touched the

picture and then she was here. Arcty lowered his voice and looked around to make sure

nobody was listing or watching. Arcty whispered to Stella so did I one second I was

holding my mums hand then I just got pulled away from her. Stella was surprised that the

same thing happened to the both of them. They became best friends and decided to help

each other to get back to their home town.

Stella asked arcty do you know how to get back. Arcty said we have to find another art

gallery in that town so they walked to the gallery and found the picture they held hands

and touched the picture at the same time. There was a big flash and they looked outside

Page 18: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

and they were there in their home town safe and sound.so they went and saw Stella’s

mum and went home.

So here we go again. Another film is beginning to form. The atmosphere is so electric you

can practically feel it in the air! The film is set in a mysterious lost village in the most

remote and wild part of Japan. Right now however, we are in wonderful New York City,

inside our exquisite filming studio with our extremely hardworking crew. By the way I’m

one of the make-up artists in case you didn’t know. When I heard the director say “Good

news everyone, this is going to be our biggest film yet!” I felt a spine-tingling rush of

exhilaration rush through me.

Anyway, after a few months of getting our complicated film set ready it was finally

finished. The set was so beautiful that when everyone was having their lunch I decided to

have a wonder around the set. Everything seemed so peaceful and pretty until all of a

sudden I started to feel incredibly dizzy and the next thing I knew I was lying on the floor

after somehow being knocked out…

When I finally woke up I was lying on a cold stone floor with an awful head-ache from all

the confusion. As I carefully stood up I realised there was an enormous waterfall in front

of me. I walked right through it which gave me a bit of a shock. “Wow” I exclaimed as I

gazed at all the friendly people and the majestic old bridge. Just as I was away to walk

across the bridge I was stopped by a panicking lady just a few years older than me. “Help

“the poor lady cried. “What’s wrong” I asked. The lady’s name was Kylie and all her

precious pets had been stolen by Japans most wanted villain. The villain had a reputation

for torturing anything that stood in his path. “Look” I said. “The best way to find the villain

is to split up and keep each other informed okay”. So we made a plan, I would explore

the whole waterfall and she would explore under the bridge. So I ran to the nearest store

and bought a load of climbing gear, and before I knew it I was climbing and abseiling

down all the places the waterfall had hidden. After a few exhausting hours of searching

we felt like giving up. However just as I was exploring the final cave I saw every type of

pet imaginable tied up and away to be thrown in to water…

As quietly as I could I snuck behind him grabbed a stick and pushed him in to the

waterfall! I untied all the animals and returned them to Kylie. “Thank you so much” Kylie

cried “How can I ever repay you?” So I asked her how to get back to New York. “You won’t

ever be able to get back New York, once you enter this village you never come out” As I

heard this I thought to myself “How will I get back to New York

The Girl in the Painting

“That’s fascinating!” said Michelle as she stares at the painting. She was at the art

museum, which was right in the middle of town. “I’ll come back to that painting” she said.

Michelle wanted to go to art school when she was older, she still had eight years till she

could go. The interesting museum closed in ten minutes. ”I want to go back to that

painting, it has so much interesting colours and beautiful texture’s”.

“Ok, don’t be long” said Michelle’s mother.

The painting was of a flowing river with a detailed bridge and a steep mountain. She

looked at the painting for a while until she got lost in the painting.

“Where am I?” said Michelle. She slowly got up. She looked around. She was next to a

cart with an elegant black horse beside it. “I recognise that horse…I’m in the painting!”

she screamed. Nobody heard her. ”Now I’m a ghost!” She decided to ignore it for now.

Michelle started to make her way to the bridge. It had a magnificent wooden pattern with

jewels and a stone floor. She looked over the bridge with the flowing blue river in front of

her. For once she wasn’t scared of the height. She touched the water and it tickled her. All

of a sudden she felt herself falling, falling, falling…

She was in the water going down into a large river with a painful stomach.

“Ouch!” Michelle hit a rock making her back sore. She saw the bottom of the river and

began to prepare herself for a hard landing.

“Hey, that didn’t hurt at all” she cried. She got out of the river just in case anyone saw

invisible splashes. Nobody could help her because nobody could see her. Around her were

tropical trees and a big steep mountain that looked like it went on forever. She thought

hard about which route to take. She could live in the jungle forever, or she could go up

the mountain that might take a week to climb. She decided to go up the mountain and be

prepared for the big climb. Luckily she had a chocolate bar her mum gave her for a treat,

and she had a bottle of water. Every hour she would have a nibble of her chocolate and a

sip of her water, so she could have plenty more. She sat on a rock and looked at the stars.

The next morning she only had about a mile to climb. When she finally made it she ran to

a house and looked in the mirror. “Hopefully this works and I could be normal again!”

Page 21: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

“I’m back!” she cried. There were police men, ambulance, all her neighbours!

“Were you in the museum?” a police man asked her.

“Yeah… what’s wrong?” she asked.

“Michelle Jones went missing!” he shouted.

“What I’m Michelle!” she cried

“Get into the car” he said.

The Magic Unicorn

There was once a princess named Emerald. She was a beautiful princess with long unicorn

coloured hair, she had blue eyes and she loved unicorns. Every Christmas she asked her

dad if she could have a pet unicorn and every Christmas her dad said no. But one day on

Emeralds birthday her dad said he had a surprise for her, Emerald was so excited. She ran

outside and her surprise was a toy unicorn.

The next day Emerald didn’t even come out of her room. Her dad was walking up the

stairs knowing that Emerald was feeling terrible because she got a toy unicorn instead of

a real unicorn. When he got to her room which was the biggest room in the grand palace,

he walked in thinking she would be on her princess bed but when he had looked around

the whole room he noticed that she was running across the bridge, but it was the bridge

that lead to the unicorn kingdom.

That day there was a search party in the unicorn kingdom and everyone was looking for

the missing princess. Emerald was terrified, suddenly in the distance she saw a unicorn.

She dazed at the beautiful creature but as soon as she knew it the unicorn was galloping

towards her, when the unicorn was right beside her she sat beside Emerald. Emerald

climbed on the unicorn and decided to call her Diamond.

That day the search party was still on and everyone was tired but when the king/Emeralds

dad made an announcement that whoever found Emerald would be rewarded with

£100.000. Soon it came dark Emerald and Diamond were still walking. Then Emerald

started to tell Diamond that she was a princess and that she lived in a castle and as soon

as Emerald knew it they were now rushing towards the gate of the palace. All the guards

had their mouths hanging open because they had never seen a unicorn before. When

they were at the doors Emerald looked behind her and saw that everyone was saying that

they were the ones who found the princess. When she got into the palace she was so

thrilled that Diamond took her home because she saw how sad her dad was but when he

saw her he turned his smile upside down

On the 1st of November it was Emeralds coronation she had a pet unicorn and a husband

named Eldon but that wasn’t good enough all she wanted on her coronation day was her

dad but he died on the 5th of October. When it was the day of the coronation she was so

glum she didn’t smile the whole day. When the crown got put on her head Eldon had to

make her smile. After the coronation there was a war and Emerald was told to stay inside

so she went outside and an arrow shot right though her. So now she could join her dad in

the great, powerful and tremendous heaven.

The hidden Kindgom

The long expedition to find the rare Flutter butterfly was not going well and the four tired

explorers had sat down unaware of the peculiar striped insect sat in an exotic tree above

their very heads. One explorer who went by the name of Toby picked a strange small juicy

yellow berry he knew was safe to eat from a bright green bush and popped it greedily into

his mouth. It tasted absolutely delicious.

The group of five soon fell asleep, the golden sand coloured sun beaming down onto their

tired faces. Though the young explorer called Toby who had eaten the red berry felt

unable to sleep in such hot conditions.

Then so suddenly a delicate small tingling noise could be heard softly echoing through the

silent rainforest. Not daring to wake his sleeping colleagues Toby stood up gently and

tiptoed softly to where the noise was coming from. He could see a small human like figure

stood in the path somewhat in the distance. Then it disappeared just as quick as it had

appeared. He started to run towards where it had been stood, picking up his pace. Then it

happened. A tree root caught his foot so quickly. He was flung into the warm air. Then

seconds before he even scraped the bottom of the jungle ground everything went

completely black.

Toby came around and found himself in mid air falling . All he could hear was a loud

gushing sound forging past him and the largest waterfall with navy blue water that

glistened like a sea of diamonds. He was seconds from plunging into the murky depths at

the bottom of the waterfall. But instead of hurtling straight into the water he floated

down gracefully like a feather.

He clambered up the side of the steep bank and stumbled onto the wooden bridge that

stood wobbling nearby. A long procession of people were walking past him, horses and

carts trundling behind. Toby followed mystified and bewildered then gasped as the scene

opened onto a vast landscape of mountains and thick tangled forests. But to Tobys

astonishment right in the middle of this wild land of greenery sat a small wooden village.

Toby shivered as a cold bony hand suddenly sat itself tightly upon his shoulder. “ Lord

Tobias!” the voice hissed. “Where have you been”. But before Toby could spin around to

Page 25: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

see, drowsiness started to overcome him again and he felt himself fall limply to the

ground as voices of the people who had started to crowd around to see what was

happening became mumbles, then whispers as they faded away. He felt the sudden

falling sensation again. Just as quickly as he had been asleep he was awake again as he hit

the bottom of the cold jungle floor with a thud. Toby stood, head aching, looking around

at his surroundings. “Just my imagination” he muttered. “Or what about that strange

berry? I might just try another one just to be sure”...

The Treasure Across the Bridge

Prologue:

There is a bridge. A shadowy bridge that anyone has ever came back. There is a story of a

man that went across a bridge to find the concealed treasure.

The Story:

Alex was an explorer but all his quests had no treasure. All it was were giant boulders,

bottomless pits and lava. Wondering, Alex was thinking about the story about the great

treasure in the cave across the bridge and the traps that hid inside. “I’m going on a

quest,” Alex told his wife. “Be careful then” the wife replied. “I Will.” Alex left the house

and started the journey towards the bridge. The Bridge was only a mile away but it was

the cavern that would be the adventure.

A mile later:

Panting like a dog, Alex was at the bridge “I should take a break,” Alex thought. He got out

a sandwich and ate it. Then Alex set out across the bridge. Very tired, Alex pulled out his

sleeping bag and slept.

The Next Day:

CRASH!!! Alex woke up “What was that!?”Alex saw a boat running down a waterfall and

he saw something on it. Alex realised when they got closer, it was a wolf pack! The wolf

pack was not attacking him, they were scared. The wolf pack had scratches and cuts. They

cuddled into Alex. They realised he was not a threat and they became friends. Alex healed

them up. Alex was waving good bye until the alpha of the pack followed him. “Awoo!” the

wolf howled. Alex was bewildered. A wolf wanted to join him in Alex’s journey. The wolf

let another wolf be the alpha so he could join his journey. Alex was now entering the

cavern with his new friend “I’m going to call you David.” The wolf howled happily when

Alex called him that. Suddenly they were above a pit of lava! Alex struggled to balance so

David helped him. “That was close!” Alex gasped. The wolf nodded. “We need to be

careful.”

After taking a break:

“Let’s get going.” Alex grunted as he stood up. Alex had a sore back but still kept going.

Alex was wondering what the next trap was and how hard it would be. The second trap

suddenly sprung out of nowhere. It was a maze! Alex and David were running through a

Page 27: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

maze when a sword and some monsters. Alex took the sword and was trying to slice the

monsters but the monsters ran out the exit so the monsters helped them. There was a

chest at the end of the maze and alive people! David saved the people and Alex took the

chest and then a giant boulder appeared! Everyone ran as fast as they could and they

escaped the cave but fell off the bridge. “NO!!!” Alex cried but the people took him back

to the village. Alex never opened the chest and there was a funeral for David.

Under the Bridge:

David stood up and howled…

The Monster

One clear day a climber called Bob discovered a giant cave with lost people living there.

The people had been living there for many years and had to try to get water from a huge

long waterfall. They had to eat grass and berries in the forests. Bob decided to explore the

cave…

He found a massive Hairy, Scary, Mary Monster that’s what it was called, then he ran back

to the village at the bottom of the mountain. Bob went to the village to tell everyone

about the Hairy, Scary Mary Monster with big, red, blood shot eyes that were glowing.

The Monster had huge, green, stinky feet and red matted, fur with bugs in it. He

accumulated a lot of people who wanted to come to the spooky cave with the Monster in

it.

Chapter 2

Once they all got there, they searched for the Monster in the cave. The lost people got

worried and wondered why they were there. One man looked down to see a big Hairy

Monster. He screamed and told everyone else what he had seen. Everyone got worried

except Bob!

“Don’t worry everyone,” said Bob very proudly.

They all got ready to hunt the big Hairy, Scary Mary Monster but when they got there the

Monster was no longer there.

“Where is that Monster?” said Billy, Bob’s big brother.

Then they decided to go back to their village and get some rest but when they got there,

they heard a big roar.

“What was that?” said Bob.

“I think that’s the Monster,” said Billy worried.

Page 31: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

“OH NO!” screamed Bob in a sarcastic, terrified voice.

“Come on people lets go,” shouted Bob, excitedly.

Chapter 3

Then they looked up and saw the Hairy, Scary, Mary Monster looking down at them with

a huge grin on her face.

“There is the big beast!” screamed Billy.

“It’s the Hairy, Scary, Mary, Monster” said Bob proudly.

The monster grabbed Bob and he screamed like a little girl with her hands waving in the

air.

“Aaaaaaaahhhh” screamed Bob like a little girl

“Put my brother down!” shouted Billy

Then the Monster put Bob down and said in a deep voice “I am the Hairy, Nice, Mary,

Monster not the Hairy, Scary, Mary, Monster and I just want some friends to have fun

with.”

“We are so sorry Hairy Nice Mary Monster we did not know you were friendly how about

we all play hide and seek now” said Bob

“Ok that sounds like a good idea,” said the Hairy Nice Mary Monster.

So they all played hide and seek and had a wonderful time.

British Bombers

British Airbase, 10:36pm 1942 WWII

“We bomb the dam tonight, 12:00 exactly. We have a Lancaster at the ready,” said the

General

“Ok, but don’t you think they’ll be expecting it?” commented a lieutenant.

“No, it’s a small village, we will be swift and as quiet as possible.”

It was mid world war two and the British were planning on bombing a heavily fortified

village dam. It was time to get into the Bombers.

Lights were beaming onto the runway; guiding the famous Lancaster Bomber off the

runway was a risky job. One Bomber was going, it was a Lancaster, it had three

machinegun pods, one on the front, one on the back and one on the roof in the middle. It

was the biggest warplane in the history of the world. Six Spitfires were sent with it in case

they were caught by enemy planes. This would be a great challenge for the British, if they

got caught.

German Village, 11:49pm 1942 WWII

The Germans scarcely spoke English but when they did you could tell they had a strong

German accent.

“The bridge looks great in front of the waterfall, the only thing is, if the dam doesn’t hold

up, the water will crash through it and the village.”

The Germans had just built a bridge beside a waterfall behind the village. The bridge was

connected to the cliff edges at either side and underneath a dam that sat in the river in

front of the waterfall high above. There were machineguns at either end of the bridge.

One at a cave entrance and one on the path at the other end.

Shortly after, the whole village went dark, everyone had gone to sleep. BOOM!! CRASH!!

The water crashed down the rocky cliff and wrecked the bridge, the rubble swept with the

water towards the small, dark village. The Lancaster flew overhead and one of the

spitfires crashed into the dock. It had been shot down by the German machinegun turrets,

this was unexpected and now the British were in danger, Messerschmitt’s began to chase

Page 33: Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 Image 2 (8-13… · Flash Fiction Competition Category 8-13 . Image 2 . Title Author Page The Little People in the Painting Orla Rogalski 3-5

down the spitfires, the Germans had a hidden runway. It was a fair match, Spitfires were

agile and strong, but so were the Messerschmitt’s. Planes fell above the now ruined

village and crashed into either the sea or the cliffs, first a spitfire, then a Messerschmitt, in

the end the only planes that made it back to the British airbase were the Lancaster and

two Spitfires, the British had won the fight, but at what cost?

British Airbase, 4:27am 1942 WWII “Four pilots lost to the Germans on one bombing run, I wouldn’t call that successful at all.

The Lancaster barely made it back, it’s going to take weeks to fix and the Spitfires! The

Spitfires are probably not going to fly again!” raged the General, although it was his idea.

Once the war ended people realised there was great loss, but the British and their allies

won against Germany and theirs.

The Day the Bridge Crashed Down

Once there was a bridge. A long brown wooden bridge. The bridge was put over a little

city called Aberdeen. The city was always crowded but there was one day when it was not

crowded. And that was the day the bridge crashed down. And I will explain everything

from morning to night.

It was a windy October morning when the trees was knocking on our windows. Everyone

was inside with a mug of coffee tea or hot chocolate. With a blanket around them with

the television on. When all of a sudden BANG BANG BANG. A thunderstorm began. The

bridge was shaking fires started in the woods. Trees started to break. Everyone was

scared and frightened. This was the biggest storm Aberdeen has ever had in history. Then

the bridge snapped and then CRASHED on top of people’s houses fires start because of

the thunder. People crushed to death. Finally the fire engines came followed by

paramedics. Who quickly ran to people who were injured but it was too late. People were

already dead they managed to rescue 36 people but 24 people had died. The fire fighters

had quickly put out the fire the police then arrived and investigated people’s homes. They

then took away all the broken wood from the bridge then soon that became a restricted

area.

Three years later. Aberdeen is now opened again and there are a lot of people in need for

homes. And that’s where I am right now I am in my brand new house where there are

joyful and happy neighbours. I met them a few hours ago and I gave them fruit baskets.

And one of my new neighbours have a 11 year old daughter and that’s perfect because I

am 11 years old. On Saturday we have scheduled to play at the park that is a mile away

from our house. And then after that we are going to get ice cream and then on Sunday

our parents are taking us to the cinema to see Miss Peregrins home for peculiar children.

And know what the most exciting part is. Is that we are going to be in the same school.

And I heard there was a new teacher and my mom told me that she was the new teacher.

But the sad thing is. Is where the bridge snapped it happened right next to my home. But

the good thing is. Is that Aberdeen is crowded again and that makes me happy. And my

dad has already got a new job as a mechanic. And I think this is the place where I am

meant to be. And I hope I can stay here for the rest of my life.

500 years ago on one of the hottest day of the year. There was a boy called Bobby and he

was only 15. One day he suddenly fell in to a beautiful, flowing river! Bobby suddenly

found himself going back in time! He found myself to be in what seemed like the Victorian

Era!

Although he was extremely confused Bobby was enjoying the heat on this sunny day. He

was standing right beside the same water fall. He was still in shock! Beyond the waterfall

Bobby saw a shop and the guy in it was saying fresh fish for sale. Yummy thought Bobby.

Next a kid ran past saying any old iron for a young boy. Bobby felt scared but somehow

was kind of enjoying himself. He continued walking into the town and found an old pub.

Perfect thought Bobby, I could do with a drink.

After he finished his drink he left the pub. Bobby had suddenly forgotten all about his

home and was enjoying being a Victorian boy. Bobby decided it was now time for lunch

and so headed to the café for some bread and dripping. Bobby couldn’t believe how

cheap it was. Although dripping is animal fat, Bobby really liked it. Next Bobby had to

suddenly jump out of the way as a horse and carriage raced past. Bobby tried to ask for a

ride but the rider said no and kicked Bobby in the face. Ouch, thought Bobby that really

hurt. Bobby opened his eyes and saw a great big castle. On the front of the castle it said

Queen Victoria. Bobby thought that must be the queen and it turned out he was right.

Bobby then saw a dark alley and decided to take a walk down it. Down the alley Bobby

saw lots of poor children. Bobby felt terrified, he thought he might become one of these

poor children. Bobby turned and ran as quickly as he could out of the alley.

When he made it of the alley he saw a man saying fresh bread for sale. Bobby decided to

buy some, it was only 50p. It was the most delicious bread ever. He decided to buy five

more loaves of bread.

Suddenly Bobby realised he had a big exam to head back to school for, the exam starts in

exactly an hour. He ran and ran and ran till he made it back to the waterfall. Bobby

jumped into the waterfall but nothing happened. What is Bobby going to do?
