Forward Looking Statements During our meeting today, we may make forward-looking statements. Any statement that refers to expectations, projections or other characterizations of future events or circumstances is a forward-looking statement, including those relating to market position, market growth, industry trends, new products and their anticipated availability, capacities, pricing, capabilities, performance and compatibility. Actual results may differ materially from those expressed in these forward-looking statements due to factors detailed under the caption “Risk Factors” and elsewhere in the documents we file from time to time with the SEC, including our annual and quarterly reports. We undertake no obligation to update these forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date hereof.

A means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation

This is not a solution, it is a pile of bricks…

This is not a solution, it is a brick…

This is not a solution in and of itself either…

Fundamental shift in thinking must and is occurring

§  Flash used for applications that require high performance but…

§  Flash for capacity in moderate performance scenarios

§  Designing a solution that can be built with mechanical drives with Flash and still having a lower TCO and TCA

§  Streamline the solution for what can be done and not what was done before

Having the Individual Hardware Pieces… Not Enough for Flash to Transform the Datacenter

Solution cost and specifications are the focus, as opposed to any single device specifications

All correct for HDDs but NOT for Flash!

Simple commodity building blocks

Assumptions have been…(to name a few)

§  Unreliable

§  Slow ‒  Ex. 300 IOPS vs 100,000+ for SSDs

§  Power hungry ‒  Ex. 30 IOPS/watt HDD vs 7,700 IOPS/watt for SSD

§  Devices are a commodity with 3 flavors that don’t vary much from vendor to vendor ‒  15K RPM, 10K RPM, 7200RPM

Traditional Datacenters are Built on the Foundation of Storage

Flash allows the removal of costly constructs needed for slow HDDs!

*Data measured by SanDisk internal team and can be supplied by Adam Roberts

§  Inefficient short-stroked solutions §  DRAM used to hide slowness of HDDs §  Small capacity points are used to reach usable performance density (IOPs/GB) §  Algorithms designed for no reason then to hide the slowness of the media ‒  These algorithms can be bottlenecks in flash-based solutions and can be streamlined (i.e., SanDisk’s

“Atomic Write” feature with Fusion IO •  Remove double buffer writes, and speed up solution by 2.4x!*

§  In Summary…

Previous Assumptions Led to Costly, Complicated Software and Additional Hardware

Short Stroking and small capacity point HDDs can make an HDD (barely) acceptable for performance-sensitive

applications but have a huge drawback…

§  Lots of small capacity drives require lots of enclosures and infrastructure to use such as enclosures/controllers and cables

§  They also need lots of power

§  Let’s not forget additional complexity in software to try and cache as much as possible as well as force random block data into streams ‒  The caching needs DRAM or some other really speedy media of course

NAND based devices have reached a cost per GB that, coupled with new larger capacity points,

allows for infrastructure consolidation. The results are…

Simpler solutions that cost less by simply requiring less hardware infrastructure (24) 24 drive enclosures with 300 GB

15k SAS drives

§  More capacity on the SSD solution ‒  110.6 TB versus 103.6 TB HDD

§  Lower cost for solution to build even when SSDs cost more per GB

§  90% HW footprint reduction §  90% Power usage reduction

§  It’s just simpler to build with less things to break!

(2) 24 drive enclosures with 4 TB Optimus Max SSDs

§  Solid State Devices aren’t just for performance now

§  Capacity/performance/cost characteristics of SSDs have improved to the point of allowing cost-effective HDD replacement at a solutions level

§  Cost per GB of individual devices is still more expensive than HDDs ‒  Capacity density of Optimus Max 4 TB drive allows for consolidating

a substantial number of HDDs ‒  This reduces infrastructure burden of housing and powering the media

‒  Overall solution cost to acquire and operate can now be lower for SSDs based on this infrastructure burden

‒  The following examples are based on a number of SSD cost per GB targets to illustrate the trending as SSD cost per GB changes •  i.e., Where is equilibrium point and how much does solution cost increase/decrease

if cost per GB changes?

§  SSD and 15k HDD cost per GB per device falling at same rate but solution cost/GB of SS solution falling faster due to:

§  15k HDD solution weighted by stagnant array enclosure and infrastructure costs §  SanDisk SSD capacity per device growing faster than HDD capacity allowing for increased

footprint compression
