FlashbackFlashbacks are when writers insert past events into a story to provide background information or context to the current events of a story.By using flashbacks, authors allow readers to better understand a characters motivation or the background to a current conflict.Dreams and memories are common ways authors present flashbacks within a story.

ForeshadowingForeshadowing is when a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story or chapter and helps the reader predict what will happen later in the text.Authors might use dialogue, conflicts, or even chapter titles as clues to suggest what is going to happen.
