November 10, 1986 (Issue#15) that we bannered theheadline "POLY POURS ITON" across our front cover.At that time, the artists wereBon Jovi, Cinderella.Cameo and Kool & TheGang.

While the artists may havechanged (with the exceptionof Bon Jovi, who remainfirmly ensconsed in the Top50), PolyGram continues topour it on. Their hit singlessell albums, which is a creditto every department in thePolyGram organization. Hitacts are being developed andmarketed for long-term suc-cess. Simply put, these folksare on fire.

The embattled NationalAssociation of Employeesand Technicians, currently inthe midst of a bitter, 13 -weekstrike against NBC, has urgedthe Federal Trade Commis-sion to investigate WestwoodOne for the "anti-trust im-plications" in its recent pur-chase of NBC's three radionetworks.

NABET attorney StephenSturm, who drafted the letter,told Hits (your #1 source foranti-trust strike -busting) thatWestwood's acquisition ofthose networks "is not con-ducive to competition as it

concentrates almost 30% ofthe network radio market-place in a single entity,weakening our union's bar-gaining position." WestwoodOne, which already ownsWestwood Radio Networksand the Mutual BroadcastingSystem, is second only toABC in market share.

"I am hoping the FTC hasaccess to further informationwhich would block the sale,"Sturm said. "It is our opinionthis merger will eliminatemost, if not all, non -ABCcompetition."

A Day In The Life Of 11111111aAt the very heart of West Hollywood's

gaudy Sunset Strip sits Tower Records, thefourth location in a worldwide chain of fifty.This is the store, though, which first putTower on the map in the eyes of the musicindustry.

In the early days, it was the destinationpoint for British rockers who first came tothis country. Today, rockers frequent thestore to see their records displayed. As com-pany founder, President and self -described"benevolent owner" Russ Solomon says,"The record companies make damn suretheir records are here." The labels take anactive role in marketing their product there,with in-store promotions, autograph sig-nings and publicity events. It is at Tower'sSunset store that new formats are tested foruse nationwide.

Before 1970, Tower Records was thehome of "Madman Muntz," a pioneer in thecar stereo business, who installed a four -track predecessor of the eight -track and cur-rent cassette system. Muntz employed pretty

girls, who worked the floor with shorts andtank tops. Today, Tower employees wear adifferent costume, sporting rock 'n' roll t -

shirts. "We're still raucous, loud andbrassy," says Solomon. "Not exactly the BelAge, but people seem to love it anyway."

Hits takes a look at all the people that dolove Tower: the customers who come fromall over the world, the personnel whosehearts and souls lie with the music, the ar-tists whose recordings are in the store, andthe industry pros who visit to keep theirfingers on the pulse of what's happenin'.

Saturday 9:00 A. M.: A dozen customersare already lined up, waiting. "Pee Wee's

Playhouse" is playing on the mounted videomonitors throughout the store. Talon VonTigrin is working in the cassette department.Talon, a committed rocker, is dressed inCheap Trick t -shirt, Marine Corps jacketwith silver metallic epaulets, baggy grey andblack camouflage pants, black sash andhardware -laden boots. His long, straightblonde hair hangs down one side of his headand a black ribbon secures a ponytail in theback, topped by a policeman's hat completewith badge. Forty silver bracelets adorn hisleft arm, spider rings are on his fingers andhis eyes are defined with black eyeliner."We always watch Pee Wee on Saturdaymorning," he says. "It's the most happenin'thing to do, that is, besides drink coffee. Isthis the episode with the fireball? Aw, bum-mer, it's a repeat."

9:10 A. M.: First customer of the day is14 -year -old Benjie Morpurgo, who ap-proaches the counter. He's going home toColorado and had to pick up that last-minutePseudo Echo tape before meeting his dadbright 'n' early at the tennis club. BeverlyHills hairdresser Tom Sims, en route to thesalon, is here to get Carly Simon's "ComingAround Again," which was recommendedto him by his doctor. He wants to listen to iton his way to work, so he can discuss it withhis MD over dinner later that day. A half -dozen shoppers trickle into the store.

10:00 A. M.: Enter Jack Lewis, MarlonJackson's manager and George Carlin'sproducer, who has come to do his"homework." He was running late thismorning, so he hasn't brought the usual cof-fee cake for the employees, a tradition of hisweekly trips to Tower over the last fifteenyears. He confides, "Billboard is a goodthree weeks behind Tower, so I come here tostay on top of things." Lewis' running repar-tee has become an institution. He jokes toTalon and his co-worker, cashier JoshSteinberg, "Do you have that soundtrackfrom a Mexican picture about a hooker call-ed `La Bimbo?" Josh cracks up. "Ohyeah," Talon snaps back, "Isn't that PaulSimon backed by Whitney Houston andAnita Baker?" Talon looks toward the door."David Lee Roth should be by any minute.He comes by all the time on Saturday mor-nings. He'll come in and say, 'Hey dudes,what's new? What's happenin'? What'sbizarre?"

10:30 A. M.: Mom Margaret Hughes andher teenage children, Rhonda, 17, and Keith,

16, are visiting from Texas. "One of mybusiness associates in Dallas knew my kidswere really into music and he said Towerwas the biggest record store he'd ever seen,so here we are." Rhonda chimes in, "If therewas a Tower in Dallas, all my friends and Iwould be there all the time!" She stares atTalon and whispers, "I'd really love to takethat guy's picture." Talon graciously holdsstill for the snapshot, easily the dozenth he'sposed for this week before the whole familyis out the door for a tour of nearby stars'homes.

11:00 A. M.: Four pens have disappearedfrom the counter. "I think the customers takethem as souvenirs," observes Josh from be-hind the register.

11:15 A. M.: The information booth is atthe center of the store, where Skip Clary, aseven-year Tower veteran, and Betsey Hes-ter, shift manager, are celebrating the latter'sfourth anniversary at the store. "I love musicand working with people," she says. "We'vegot a great crew, with a core of peoplewho've been here more than ten years.There are a lot of perks and celebrities comein all the time. Jon Voight was in the otherday, Iggy came in last week and BruceSpringsteen comes in regularly when he's intown. Usually nobody recognizes him be-cause he's in a baseball cap and grubbyjeans. He'll hang out in the tape departmentfor fifteen minutes, buy a bunch of oldiesand leave. The employees know who he is,though, and he autographs albums for themat the front desk when he signs hisAmerican Express draft."

11:30 A. M.: Jack Lewis makes his way to

the information booth and gives Betsey abig hug. The phones are ringing off thewall, so he helps a caller with a questionabout Arthur Prysock. Lewis knowseverything. "Jack did it again!," he says ashe replaces the receiver and kisses hergood-bye. Betsey comments, "People callup all the time, sing a song off-key and ask,`Who is it? Do you have it?' We got a lot ofpeople singing the little kid's part on XTC's`Dear God.' It was really funny." Skip tellsa story of a well-known soul singer, whoshall remain nameless, who asked him,"What's that song they play at footballgames?" The man was then directed to KateSmith's version of "The Star SpangledBanner."

12 Noon: London -born Peter Christian isa regular at Tower, stopping in three or fourtimes a week. He is here to check out newreleases. Christian designs sound systemsand deejays for fashion shows. He spendsover $150 a week on records at Tower,maintaining a charge account at the store. "Idon't like to read the trades or watchMTV," he says. "I like to have a fresh at-titude about what's new, so I come here to

_get that."1:00 R M.: Talon's lunch break. Sitting in

the stock room, he talks about his job. "I'ma guitarist and singer. I came out fromCleveland to break into the music business.When I applied to work here, my hair was afoot high, totally punked out, and I wasdressed in my usual ripped -up jeans and t -shirt. We can express ourselves in the waywe dress and just be ourselves. Manage-ment respects us as individuals. But we allhave good attitudes. There's a warm feelingand everyone gets along. It's a no -pressure,fun job and the best part is the co-workersand the customers. Working here gives mean inside look at the politics of the recordindustry. It's also a great opportunity tohook up with other musicians. Sometimes,we even get offers to do extra work in filmsor modelling jobs."

1:30 R M.: Several calls come in to re-quest free passes to that night's taping of aKiss video which the store has been hand-ing out in a co -promotion with radio stationKNAC. Two young kids from Covina ex-citedly accept the tickets and go over toanother counter to fill out an entry blank towin a free bicycle from WEA.

2:15 R M.: Hector Elizarraras needs as-sistance. "My girlfriend sent me all the way

from Glendale to get this record, asoundtrack. I saw the movie last night, but Islept through most of it. I guess I wasdrunk." And he's not too steady today,either. "Was it `La Bamba?'," asks Betsey."Yeah, yeah that's it. I gotta get that record.I got a hangover, but I have to keep mygirlfriend happy," he says. Betsey handshim the LP, the 389th copy the store hassold that week.

3:30 P. M.: The store is getting crowdedwith shoppers of every variety. Ron Bailey,12" singles buyer, says, "Once in a while,we get a real nut. A short guy in his latethirties, dressed like a businessman, came inrecently and threw a tantrum when he foundout we were out of a certain album. He wentover to the stereo console, knocked the tonearm off the record and started rocking theentire unit, screaming at the top of his lungs.Security had to toss him out."

3:45 P. M.: Talon warns a customer aboutthe World Saxophone Quartet tape he'sabout to purchase. "Don't listen for aprolonged period of time. It'll cause braindamage!" Undeterred, the customer buysthe tape. Another customer asks the name ofthe last Genesis album. Talon and Joshanswer in unison, "'Invisible Touch!'" Tothem, "it's a matter of personal pride to keepon top of things."

4:00 P. M.: A Japanese tour bus has ar-rived, one of the two or three that will be

stopping here over the weekend. Skip says,"They usually unload about fifty Japanesetourists who ask for extra bags and shootpictures of themselves in front of the dis-plays." Makoto Takahashi from Kawasaki isvisiting L. A. as an escort for a high schoolstudents' cultural exchange program. "Wehave a Tower Records in Yokohama, butwhen I read about this one in a Japanesemagazine, I wanted it to be one of my firstplaces to see here." Takahashi is clutching alarge stack of gospel, folk and Christmasmusic he says he can't find in Japan. "Theamount of records here is amazing," hemarvels.

4:30 P. M.: The next shift arrives, includ-ing Jim Laspesa, a drummer whosebandmembers also happen to be hisroommates. All three of them work atTower. One by one, they moved to Hol-lywood from Buffalo, where they'd heldjobs in indie record stores. "I enjoy this jobso much," says Jim, "that I really don'tmind making less money. Right now, we'resaving up to buy a band car that we can usefor moving equipment and getting torehearsals."

my inspirations, and that helps my drive. Irealize my idols are regular people, and itmakes my own career goals seem more at-tainable."

5:30 R M.: Ron Bailey comes to the backroom to pull stock. "I'm working towardbecoming a producer," he says. "I comefrom New Orleans, where the record storesare small. We never saw any industrypeople, needless to say. Here, I've met VP'sof record companies, and I feel comfortablerelating to them. When the time's right forme to make a career move, I'll have laidsome important groundwork."

5:45 P. M.: Ron, Talon and Judyth Sprin-ger, assistant to the singles and 12" buyers,are swapping their favorite celebrity stories.Talon goes first. "Vanity came in with somebig six-foot guy. I had a big crush on herand wanted her to autograph my single. Sheasked if she could touch my hair. I thoughtshe'd just pat it or something, but she ranher fingers all the way up my neck andthrough my scalp. If looks could kill, thatguy would've nailed me."

It's Judyth's turn now. "A great -lookingguy came up to the register, and I thought tomyself how gorgeous he was for an oldergentleman. He bought some stuff, walkedover to the tape department, then went to thefront door just a few feet from me. I keptstaring at him when my friend buzzed meand said, 'Hey, did you see Mel Gibson?' SoI said, really loud, 'Mel Gibson? Where!!??'The cute guy looked me right in the eye andsmiled and I realized it was him. I just wan-ted to crawl under the register. He just keptsmiling, though. I guess he thought it wasreally funny."

Ron pipes up with his brush with great-ness. "You know that porn star, KittenNatividad? She was the best. She came rightup and brushed against me. Just like a kit-

ten," he sighs. "Oh, and there was the timeRobert Plant came in after eating at Spago.He was immediately surrounded by fifteen -year -old boys. We kept saying we weresorry, but he said, 'Are you kidding? I livefor this!!'"

6:00 R M.: Talon has disappeared at theother end of the stockroom. He calls out,"Hey, check this out!!" Everyone movesfrom the office over to the one-way securitywindow where the retail area can be care-fully scrutinized. A young couple has foundwhat they think is an isolated corner of thestore. "He keeps looking around to see ifanyone can see them and then he fondlesher," says Talon. Little do the pair suspectthat every employee not out on the floor iswatching them.

7:30 R M.: "The Chief' arrives, weather-beaten, in his forties, with a five-day stub-ble, greasy dirty blonde hair, beat -up jeansand jean jacket with peace signs andAmerican flag patches, and a guitar strapwith no guitar. He looks like a washed-upDon Johnson. Singing along to AC/DC,"The Chief' is jamming around the store,playing air guitar like a frenzied maniac, asother customers stare in disbelief. Importbuyer Chuck Greenland laughs,"Sometimes he has drumsticks in his backpocket and beats on the blues records. Oncehe tried to imitate a Chuck Berry duck -walk.It's a miracle he didn't fall flat on his face!At least he's an improvement on 'The Snif-fer.' That pervert kept going after women'sskirts. He lasted two days before we threwhim out for good. They had to lock the guyup."

7:45 R M.: A well-groomed, conservativelooking man in his forties, who has beeneyeing a ponytailed woman close to his agedressed in a tennis outfit, approaches her inthe jazz section. Together, they take theirpurchases to the register and exchangephone numbers in line.

8:30 P. M.: The parking lot in back ofTower is packed. Cars are waiting at bothentrances for the next spot, some of themfor up to ten minutes. Occasionally, accord-ing to security guards (William) "Mack"and Calvin Sherrod, there is an argument,but for the most part, the two gentlemenmaintain a watchful eye, directing the

smooth flow of traffic in and out of the lot.9:45 R M.: The store is jammed with

over a hundred people as the action heatsup. For a good number of the customers,this trip to Tower is their Saturday nightparty. Hardcore rockers decked out in fullleather regalia rub elbows with sophistos inexpensive evening gowns and formal wear,surf punks, skateboarders, well-to-dotourists and not -so -well-to-do tourists. Thebrowsing is heavy, but sales are brisk, too.The lines at the registers seldom slowdown.

11:15 P. M.: A trio of heavily made-up,flashily dressed mini -skirted strippers (orhookers?), one of them in a nearlytransparent dress, want to find some "goodlovemaking music" they can dance (orstrip?) to. Their needs are accomodated byconscientious recommendations from theTower staff of Luther Vandross, Jody Wat-ley and Kenny G.

Midnight: The Saturday night soiree atTower is in full swing. The "night freaks,"as they are dubbed by Tower personnel, areout in full force, some of them drunk(though not unruly) from their earlier ex-cursions to nightclubs and bars along theStrip.

12:45 P. M.: Dennis Sharpe makes theinevitable announcement: "Tower Recordsis now closing. Please bring your purchasesto the front of the store." People take theirtime, a few unwilling to heed the request toleave. "Aren't you open 24 hours?," some-one inquires.

1:00 A. M.: The last browser still doesn'tseem to realize Tower's business day hasended. "Can you tell me where I can findThe Beastie Boys?," he asks. C. J. Bus-caglia, shift manager, guitarist and one-thirdof Jim Saspesa's Buffalo band, patientlyresponds, "They're probably at home rightnow," hoping he'll get the hint. But therecalcitrant customer is oblivious. Salesper-son Jeff Burdette makes the point a bitmore strongly. "We're closed. We're reallyclosed. Anyone who wants to stay can graba broom." The message finally sinks in andthe last straggler walks out as the doors shutfor the last time on a Saturday that has seensome 2,000 people trek through TowerRecords. The end of another day.

Q Is there any difference betweenthe so-called "Hot" and "Power"formats?

A It's just two different names fora radio station. Both are based onsimilar principles, but they'vebeen adjusted for their localmarkets.

I think it has more to do withthe music make-up than anythingelse. And what the competitivesituation allows each radio stationto do. In L. A., for example, thereis essentially one competitor forPWR 106, and that's KIIS, whichis a pretty progressive Top 40radio station. In New York. thereare four competitors that we haveto deal with. There are two blackradio stations that have that seg-ment of the audience pretty wellcovered. And there are two Top40's which are very strong, al-

though they are also the most con-servative when it comes to play-ing new music.

In L. A., Power has been able togo a little faster on music and togo through music a little bitquicker than we do. It takes a longtime to get a record going in NewYork to the point that a Z100 orWPLJ will look at it. We can beout in front of those guys withoutbeing too far in front.

Q How do you position your sta-tion against Z100 and WPLJ?

A Basically as an alternative tothose two. In research we'vedone, Z100 and PWR95 are per-ceived as very stale. They play thesame music over and aver andthey don't play anything new. Sothe marketing line we use is

"HOT103, because New Yorkwon't stand still for the same old

music.- We've marketed oursel-ves as a fresher, more happeningversion of a Top 40 station.

Q What is the difference betweenyour format and the old discostations?

People have al-ready started to see some of thatwith classic rock.

Echo & the Bunnymen stormed through the West Coast lastweek behind their latest WARNERS release, putting on atremendous show full of old Doors covers, including their coverof "People are Strange," and even featuring a special guest ap-pearance by Ray Manzarek on "Soul Kitchen." Didn't he do thesame thing with X a while back on the same song? The showwas embellished with post -punk aerobic popsters New Orderwhose rhythmic strength somehow overcame their anti -imageposture and the largely under age audience screamed their ap-proval. Meanwhile word has it that the New Order greatest hitsalbum "Substance" is selling well on CD where it is twice aslong, including, as it does all, the B-sides to the hit single re-mixes featured on the album Openers on the tour, GeneLoves Jezebel held a small listening party this week to kick offtheir new album "The House of Dolls," due next month onGEFFEN. The first track from the album, "The Motion of Love"is already breaking strong at album radio and is a strong bet forTop 40 success. They begin a headlining tour of big clubs andsmall theaters in the New Year Also on the road: WarrenZevon and X are going out together, making for an interestingpackage, while Hilsker Du take their awesome power-thrashohigh -intensity show across the country. This trio remains themost gripping live act around today, X notwithstanding, with ametallic white soul attack that they come close to approachingon their recent "Warehouse: Songs and Stories" On the otherend of the musical spectrum, the Balancing Act are out acrossthe mid -West in support of their brand new PRIMITIVE MANrelease "Three Squares and a Roof" Buckwheat Zydeco hasa chance to get out of New Orleans thanks to his latest albumrelease on ISLAND called "On a Night Like This." The crownprince of zydeco music treks up the East Coast and into Canadathrough October on a club tour the dB's, back with originalguitarist Gene Holder, are out on the road again behind their"The Sound of Music" album and in November, they join thq,R.E.M. tour on the West Coast One of the burning issues ofthe moment around here is if and when Tom Waits is going totour. We do know that Van Morrison will make his annual cross-country outing fairly soon. He has a new album on POLYGRAMwith another title, "Poetic Champions Compose," as enigmaticas his music which is evolving into cutting edge new age, but isstill underscored by the soulful Celtic growl. Frankly the mancan do little wrong in this corner TVT have doubled their ros-ter by signing the Connells, an all-American dark and janglygarage band. The label that brought Aussie band the Saints backto life last year have the Connell's highly -anticipated new album"Boylan Heights," the second by the band, out any day now. It isproduced by the noted Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Suzanne Vega,etc.) Dusty Springfield is counting on the current success sheis having with "What Have I Done to Deserve This," her smashduet with the Pet Shop Boys, to revive her career as the silky -voiced 60's legend returns to the studio for a solo album, the firstin many years another legend Roy Orbison is also trying outa duet with a contemporary artist - this time, it's Canadiancountry rocker, K.D. Lang.

Dan Hill knows how dangerously close he came to being an answerto a '70s trivia question as in "Who was that strange -lookingCanadian dude who co -wrote that song always done at weddings andin real slow elevators called 'Sometimes When We Touch'?" He alsosang that mega -hit, which got the affable low-key singer -songwriter aGrammy nomination and royalty checks of close to one million dol-lars. After a four-year hiatus, he's back with the cleverly -titled Colum-bia album "Dan Hill" that includes a smash duet with Vonda Shep-pard "Can't We Try," a dramatic ballad that won't be sung at wed-dings unless divorce lawyers are present. Hill has lost over thirtypounds from his hippie days, regained his confidence as an artist andmaintained his ability to create music yuppies can relate to withoutfear of embarrassment.

What's the story behind "Can'tWe Try"?

I was having a fight with mywife. I left the room and went into

my study and started writing thesong. A short time later, my wifeentered the room, looked at what Ihad written and told me shethought a woman's side should be

represented. She came up with thelyrics that Vonda sings. The songcame together easily from thatpoint, but I wouldn't suggest anyaspiring songwriters fight withtheir lovers in order to get materialfor a song. The toughest part ofthe song was finding a singer whocould put that passion in the vocal.We were getting down to the wireand an engineer thought of Vonda,who was a backup singer wholived near the studio. I think thesong is a success because the painit portrays any lover can relate to.

I was 23 at the time and seemedto follow the song around theworld on tour as it hit in differentcountries. I had long hair then andbecame easily recognizable,which made it harder to be in-visible around people to studythem for possible songs. I becamethe star and it was too much forme. It's ironic but in the early '80swhen Dan Hill was out of voguemusically I became a very goodsongwriter. I had come full circle.Suddenly I was unknown againyet I had the full knowledge ofhaving been famous, which nearlydestroyed my life and career.

During those glory days wasthere any aspect of fame you in-dulged too much?

(Shy grin) I had just had awoman I'd been living with for along time leave me. I felt very in-adequate and thought there wassomething wrong with me."Sometimes When We Touch"was a sensitive song that became afantasy symbol for a lot ofwomen. The woman li wantedwouldn't have me and the womenwho desired me generally didn'twant to know me. I could havebeen replaced by Air Supply orJames Taylor or the next charthitmaker at any time, but I wentwith the fulfilling of my sexualfantasies. This was ten years agoremember, pre -AIDS, so I had afun time letting myself go. Youburn out quickly not because of

'80s like they had in the previousdecade. Nobody wanted to hearme sing my songs like "In YourEyes." Both George Benson andJeffrey Osborne recorded the songand it went into the Top Ten onthe jazz and adult contemporarycharts respectively.

Did you suddenly discover youhad an image problem?

Most definitely. I had a personathat I didn't know how to change.It made me work harder. I wasmore angry than feeling rejected.See, I always thought my singingability was better than mysongwriting ability. What kept megoing was the words of en-couragement I got from a lot ofsongwriters in Los Angeles whothought I had a special talent. Inthe back of my mind I always sawmyself returning on the musicscene as a singer. I knew I neededto create and record my own hit inorder to validate my own ticket onthe concert track.

What's the most common mis-take amateur songwritersgenerally make?

They try to sound like some-body else. If you listen to localtalent contests that radio sponsors,the music will likely imitate thecurrent hot artist. This year it

would be U2. Songwriters need tofind their own distinctive style. Astrong melody can always ove-rcome weak lyrics. Everyone canhum a tune, but not everyone cansing.

During the summer doldrums before the all-star break, when theMets were 6 1/2 games behind the first -place Cardinals, a brouhahaerupted that threatened to destroy the spirit of the once indomitable1986 World Champion New York Mets. It began when Darryl Straw-berry, their most controversial power -hitter, claimed he had a feverand asked to be removed from the line-up for the second and thirdgames of the June 29 - July 1 three -game series with the Redbirdsfrom St. Loo at Shea.

The Mets won that night without him, but the next day in a NewYork paper appeared a picture of Darryl in a Queens recording studiorapping his tune "Chocolate Strawberry" into a mike when he was

A I most definitely was sick. Iwas committed to doing therecording session. When youmake a commitment you haveto do it. I felt terrible all day. Iwas so sick that I wasn'tstrong enough to help the ballclub win, and I thought thebest thing to do was sit out.

0 Who are your musical in-fluences?

A I kind of like LL Cool J andRun-D.M.C., but you'd nevercatch me at a Run-D.M.C.concert. I also like Dana Dane.

A I had a lot of influences. It'ssomething I've always wantedto do. I was going to do it withKurtis Blow, but things justdidn't seem to work out. Wecouldn't get together to do it. I

then got involved with someother people, namely this guyfrom California I went toschool with, Ritchie Rich, whowas in the rap business. Hespoke to me about the pos-

A It would be nice. We hadtalked about it, and some-where down the line we'llwork it out. I'm quite sure itwould be very exciting for meto do a video after the releaseof the record. I'm anxious todo that if it comes around.

Strawberry was hurt by his teammates' remarks and reacted boldly."Where would this team be without me? So I miss a couple of games.These guys are asses. When I'm gone from here, they'll wonder why Ileft," he said.

Hits Magazine hit the field to elicit the "Strawberry Statement"from the Straw Man himself and to find out more about hismoonlighting in the record biz.

Do you have plans formusic after baseball?

A No, not really [laughs'. I

just enjoy music. I like alltypes. Making the rap record issomething I looked forward todoing. Being in the professionthat I'm in, you think of otherthings that you like to do, andcutting a rap record has alwaysbeen my dream.

0 Do you really want to betraded? Wouldn't you ratherstay in New York with all itsmedia exposure?

A Right now, I'm very pleasedand satisfied with the waythings have calmed down.New York is a great place toplay in, with the support be-hind you. I'm going to contin-ue playing here. I don't reallyworry about the media; I'm soused to it. I've been in NewYork for five years now.

0 What do you find to be thedifference between New Yorkand California? Would yourather play in your hometown,Los Angeles?

A At this point, I'd preferbeing in New York. A lot ofthings happen here. People in

L.A. are more laid-back,whereas people in New Yorkare more outgoing. They liketo go and do things. There's abig difference. It's somethingyou have to deal with. Mostplayers on the team that arenot from New York find it

rough, but it takes time to getused to. Everything else comesaround once you make thoseadjustments.

0 Do you think the Mets canwin this thing?

A We have a great chance -as good as anyone else's.Right now, we're not going tolook ahead to the WorldSeries. You have to be verypatient until that happens.When that time comes, if ithappens and you're in theWorld Series, it's exciting tobe there, you enjoy it andmake the best of it. After all,the goal is to make the WorldSeries. I've been in the majorsnow for five years, and I've al-ready played in my first WorldSeries. Some guys spend 10years without ever reachingthe World Series - somespend an entire career. Hope-fully, we'll get back there. It'sjust a matter of time.
