Folk at the Flavel welcomes Flook, a legendary folk band of the late 1990s and early 2000s who have recently reformed after a hiatus of 10 years.

Following three critically acclaimed studio albums they won the accolade of Best Group at the BBC Folk Awards in 2006. Having just released their long awaited new album ’Ancora’ they are back together to play a limited tour of Europe so catch these rare shows while you can.

Jazz and classical idioms live happily side by side in the benign and often surprising world of pianist and composer John Horler. He has been known for many years as one of the UK’s finest jazz pianists working closely with Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine for 20 years. He has also performed with Art Farmer, Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Maynard Ferguson, Tony Coe, Ronnie Ross, Pete King, Kenny Wheeler and Tommy Whittle amongst others.

Magnus and Guy Johnston have played chamber music together since their early childhood. They met Tom Poster in 2000, when Guy and Tom were in the final of the BBC Young Musician competition together, and shortly afterwards began performing together as a trio.

Nick Drake recorded three albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death, aged only 26, his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and re -evaluation of his genius, he is one of the most loved singer/songwriters.

This concert begins with an introductory set of timeless songs by brilliant songwriters – all contemporary with Nick Drake – including Roy Harper, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, John Martyn and Bert Jansch. Also featured are poems by William Blake which Keith has set to guitar arrangements based on Nick’s unique style.

DARTMOUTH STEAM PUNK FESTIVAL

Coming to Dartmouth for the first time will be the fun and frolics of what is known as a Steampunk Festival.

Inspired by the imaginary world of Victorian Science Fiction it encompasses literature, art, fashion and music. Steampunk festivals have become very popular in many part of the UK and it will be great to see a new venture in the Dartmouth calendar.

There will be lots of entertainment over the weekend and Flavel will be participating by hosting a specialist market in the main hall.

A landmark counterculture film, and a ‘touchstone for a generation’ that ‘captured the national imagination’, Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle.

Pupils at Dartmouth Academy welcome the opportunity to showcase their very high quality work through Art and Design and Photography at their annual Summer Exhibition. Pupils use a wide range of media, techniques and processes to arrive at a series of personal outcomes. Staff, parents and pupils, are very proud of all they have achieved.

Composition, surface and colour are prominent in this exhibition of painting and printmaking. Alison's themes include trees in the landscape and architectural features such as arches, columns and wrought iron spirals, while Emma is inspired by the Devon landscape and coastline and she often embellishes her richly coloured collagraphs with stitching and beadwork.

'Dogs in Ink' is, well, just that…..original portraits and caricatures of dogs hand drawn in ink. Chris Green produces commissioned work starting from a photograph, making a simple pencil outline sketch and gradually building up the detail with black ink on cartridge paper or producing caricatures by drawing live and producing an immediate image.

His genuine love of dogs shines through, producing images that capture the spirit, quirkiness and personality of each dog.

Anne Furness owns her own ceramic studio workshop by the sea in South Devon, an area of great natural beauty, and is constantly affected by the nature that surrounds her. She is particularly interested in textures and surfaces and is continually looking for ways to transfer these influences to her work.

For me, drawing pictures with bright colours that make people feel better is, and always has been, a really good thing to do.

Living in South Devon, I’m able to explore this beautiful area of out-standing natural beauty every day, capturing the sea and landscape in my work in all its colours. All the work in my exhibition is original.

Judy and Jan met several years ago, a friendship developing based on mutual respect for each other's work. Though painting in very different styles they both gain inspiration from each other and their fascination with the colours, textures and constantly changing moods of the Devon landscape, which they try to convey through their art.
