Home to more than 2,000 shrines and temples, Kyoto, Japan, conjures up the ancient past like few other places in the world. Yetjuxtaposed with this history is a city at the forefront of education andinnovation. Some of Japan’s most famous technology companies arebased in Kyoto. So too are some of its leading universities, beginningwith Kyoto University, the second-oldest national university in Japan.

Kyoto University is home to over 20,000 students—with about 10%coming from overseas—and to some of the country’s top researchers, including Tasuku Honjo, who last year became the sixth Kyoto Universityscientist to be awarded a Nobel Prize since 2000. Besides undertakingcutting-edge research, the university provides a world-class education.Anticipating that all its graduates will be exposed to data sciencein the workplace regardless of their field of study, one of its newesteducation efforts, the Center for Innovative Research and Education inData Science—founded in 2017 within the Institute for Liberal Arts andSciences—has designed a new curriculum that trains all students in thebasics of data science, including artificial intelligence and big data, nomatter their major.

Data science for all

Many of the memory-processor components in your smartphone wereprobably built in Japan. On the other hand, many of the applicationson that phone probably were not. Japan is renowned for its high-techmanufacturing, but, as a government advisory council of industry andacademic leaders concluded in May 2016, it is falling behind in datascience. By December of the same year, Kyoto University was one of sixuniversities selected by the Japanese government to change the waydata science is taught in Japan.

Data science is becoming omnipresent. No matter the industry—economics, journalism, medicine—data scientists are in demand. Today,a university is failing its students if it does not educate them in thisimportant field.

“Japan is very strong technologically, but not at the level of datamanagement. Our society needs more people who have competence indata science,” says Hiroshi Tamura, a professor at the center.

All students graduating from Japanese universities can expect theirmastery of a subject to match that of students from any university aroundthe world. However, compared with their peers overseas, Japanesestudents take considerably fewer courses outside of their specialty. So,while their proficiency in their chosen subject matches that of otherstudents, they may lack a certain breadth in their overall knowledge.

Akihiro Yamamoto, director of the center, says, “The Center forInnovative Research and Education in Data Science is trying to changethis by designing a wide range of courses that teach data science toall students, regardless of their major.” The center has university-widesupport, with each school being asked to nominate a data scientist to

teach the classes. The subject also appeals to the students—about half oflast year’s first-year students enrolled in its classes.

Preparing students for the futureThe Center for Innovative Research and Education in Data Science

provides a new vision for data science education. At universities aroundthe world, students are required to take courses in nonmajor subjectssuch as creative writing or computer programming, not because they willbecome professional writers or programmers, but because these skillsare expected for many jobs. Kyoto University sees data science similarly, and is committed to providing a new model for Japanese educationthat will enable its graduates to continue the university’s long history ofproducing leaders in their respective fields.

The unique learning environment offered by the university, togetherwith its world-class researchers, state-of-the-art facilities, and historicallegacy, offers a rare opportunity for students to walk in the footsteps ofsome of Japan’s greatest philosophers, thinkers, and scientists. Therethey can join the next generation of Japan’s brightest minds, changingthe world through data science. You are invited to join them too.

ACCELERATING

REGENERATIVEMEDICINE

We’re applying our photographic film innovations

to help advance new treatments in the revolutionary

field of regenerative medicine. Over the last 80-plus

years, we’ve developed advanced technology

that controls complex chemical reactions in

photographic film that’s a mere 20 microns(*1) thick.

And today, that technology is being applied

to research and the world’s first clinical trial(*2)

of medical treatments that use high-quality

iPS cells. And in the future, we’ll strive to help

those suffering from a range of medical

conditions, such as those of the eyes, nerves,

heart and more. Of course, the challenges

are endless, but so are the possibilities.

Which is why we’ll never stop accelerating

regenerative medicine to help build a

stronger, healthier future for all.

IMPROVING THE FUTURE

When you’re a company that has spent 85 years

striving to move the world forward, you never stop.

After achieving growth in global markets while

competing with industry rivals at the height of

photographic film’s relevance, never stop.

After turning the threat of the digital revolution

into opportunity despite the drastic decline in

photographic film demand, never stop.

And moving forward, we’ll never stop contributing

to society by developing products and services with

a wide range of advanced technologies.

Making smartphone displays react responsively

to human touch. Pushing the boundaries of

cinematography with 4K and 8K lenses.

Transforming commercial printing with leading-edge

inkjet technologies. Creating intelligent workplaces

with AI-powered solutions.

Advancing regenerative medicine to meet unmet

medical needs. And developing high-quality

3D imaging systems designed to enable

doctors to quickly diagnose conditions.

Because when it comes to creating value

from innovation, you can rest assured

we’ll never stop improving the future, so that

together, we can make the world a better place.

futureAt GSK, we are poised to transform

drug discovery by taking a deeper look

into the genetic clues behind disease,

aided by large-scale genetic resources,

the latest technology and advanced

data science skills.

Our new approach to R&D has at its

core science related to cancer and to

the immune system, and will leverage

Human Genetics, Functional Genomics

and advanced analytics to improve the

probability of successfully developing

new medicines.

We are using human genetics to generate

new insights, and selecting targets that

have a high degree of validation based

on human genetics. To identify the next

generation of first-in-class targets, we

will leverage our exciting collaborations

with 23andMe, FinnGen, UK Biobank,

Open Targets and The Altius Institute,

amongst others. This shift to a genetics-

driven portfolio in a disease agnostic

manner will result in a portfolio of robust

lead candidate molecules with a higher

probability of success.
