The Flexiform coaxial cable range from Habia Cable provides a reformable alternative to the traditional semi-rigid (copper tube) coaxial cables for high frequencies. Able to operate up to 18 GHz as standard, Flexiform is ideal for microwave applications and has the ability to be stripped and formed into position without the need for any speciallist tools. Handling is similar to any standard coaxial cable which means that traditional cut and strip machines can be used.

Flexiform & Flexiform XThe original, premium, re-formable coaxial cable, the Flexiform range was created in the sizes:

• 401 (0.250”)

• 402 (0.141”)

• 405 (0.086”)

As the range proved popular it was expanded to include a standard variant: Flexiform X, as well as the intermediate sizes:

• 380 (0.171”)

• 220 (0.110”)

The 402 and 405 sizes use Silver Plated Copper Covered Steel (SCCS) conductors in order to provide a stronger central core but are also available with Silver Plated Copper (SPC) conductors to provide a non-magnetic option as this can improve both passive intermodulation and flexibility. These types are referred to with the suffix ‘NM’.

The remaining sizes: 401, 220 and 380 are only available with non-magnetic SPC conductors even though their descriptions don’t include the ‘NM’ reference.

Flexiform L & Flexiform LX A low loss variant which uses a profiled dielectric to reduce attenuation by approximately 7% compared to original and standard Flexiform types. This gives a phase stable, high performance coaxial cable with little dimensional trade off and no additional cost. As with the original Flexiform, both a premium (Flexiform L) and a standard (Flexiform LX) option is available.

Flexiform LXF Adding a foil as part of the screen, Flexiform LXF coaxes offer considerably improved electrical performance with attenuation in the region of 20% better than the standard Flexiform.

Flexiform SL & Flexiform SLXA small, low loss variant, Flexiform SL uses the technology of Flexiform L but instead of reducing the attenuation it reduces the size, providing the electrical performance of a larger coaxial within a smaller space envelope.

Both a premium (Flexiform SL) and a standard (Flexiform SLX) option is available.

All Flexiform designs can be modified on request for alternative conductors, dimensions and colours.

Multibend FJ The Multibend range from Habia Cable offers a flexible alternative to the traditional semi-rigid coaxial cables with an electrical performance that is almost identical to Flexiform. The solid copper tube that is normally used in a semi-rigid coax is replaced with a wrapped silver-plated copper foil and braid giving excellent shielding properties and the added benefit that Multibend can be used in flexible applications as well as fixed installations. Multibend is extremely cost effective as it eliminates the waste lengths traditionally associated with semi-rigid cables with minimal performance penalties.

Multibend is typically used in antennas and cabinet systems. With an operating frequency of up to 18 GHz, Multibend is able to offer a microwave solution for a range of applications from satellites and military systems to medical products.

The standard construction for Multibend is an FJ version using an FEP sheath. This maintains high temperature performance and chemical resistance as well as excellent cut-through and abrasion properties. Although much less common than their Flexiform counterparts, Multibend can also be made in HFJ and non-magnetic NM constructions.

This gives a phase stable, high performance coaxial cable with little dimensional trade off and no additional cost. ApplicationA reformable alternative to semi-rigid coaxes, Flexiform X offers the unique ability to be hand-formed with no special tooling required. The tin-soaked braid offers outstanding shielding properties whilst the non-magnetic conductor improves performance with regard to Passive Inter-Modulation (PIM). The flame retardant, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheath enables use in a wide variety of applications. The original, premium specification version (Flexiform HFJ) is also available.

Flexiform and Multibend are designed using the best available dielectric material in PTFE, properties of which can be found over-leaf and in Habia Cable’s Materials literature.

The Flexiform product range uses 3 distinct sheath combinations:

• Un-sheathed

• FEP for high temperature (FJ) cable types

• HFS 80 T for the lower temperature, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheathed versions.

In addition to these two options we are able to select from a wide variety of other sheath materials and add these if required, although it should be noted that the use of irradiated sheath materials is not recommended due to the PTFE dielectric.

As with the choice of material, both the sheath colour and the cable marking can be modified according to our customer’s request. Marking can also be applied to un-sheathed Flexiform coaxes as well as the FJ and HFJ types.

VariationsAlthough the mechanical perforamance presented here should

remain relatively unchanged for all dielectric types, it is important to note that there may be some subtle variations between the solid and profiled dielectric properties.

Spider-GraphsThe spider-graph comparisons are intended to present the key strengths and weaknesses of the materials used within the Flexiform range of coaxial cables.

Information is compiled from what are believed to be authoritative sources and / or independent testing of material samples. In some instances Habia Cable have drawn comparisons and offered expectations based on alternative test protocols and their results.

It is believed that the information provided is accurate and factual as of the date printed, however new testing is constantly being carried out which may result in changes to the published data.

It should be noted that in most respects a cable will only perform to the level of its weakest component and the graphs for sheath materials should be read together with the dielectric graph for a more true representation of the overall cable performance.
