1.1 FlexiPacket MultiRadio Introduction

FlexiPacket MultiRadio is a reliable and flexible microwave radio, which efficiently transports Ethernet traffic in RF bands from 6 GHz up to 38 GHz.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio can be used in different transmission networks: mobile networks, fixed networks or private networks.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio is the evolution of the outdoor unit of Nokia Siemens Networks FlexiPacket Micro-wave: a new packet microwave system designed to meet the requirements of evolved transport networks with the target of minimizing the operator Total Ownership Costs.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio joins together the benefits of an advanced scalable microwave radio and of a real carrier grade Ethernet nodal solution.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio is the means of deploying a cost-effective microwave infrastructure for 3G, WiMAX and LTE backhaul, high speed wireless Internet networks, fixed broadband access backhaul and private wireless networks.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio is the right solution to design advanced mobile backhaul networks based on Ethernet transport. The solution is conceived both for pure packet and hybrid (TDM+packet) networks.

1.2 Full Packet and Hybrid Solution

FlexiPacket portfolio, beside Packet Networks scenario, will address Hybrid applications in Microwave Backhaul (Fig. 2).

Hybrid (TDM separated from Packet traffic) will be supported by FlexiPacket MultiRadio platform via specific software release, in conjunction with FlexiPacket Hub 800 Indoor Unit (via a dedicated sw for hybrid)

FlexiPacket MultiRadio is then able to perform “Full Packet mode” and “Hybrid Mode” via Software Release change

In “Hybrid mode”, no PseudoWire Emulation is performed, TDM and Ethernet are separately managed.

1.3 Split -Mount Architecture

FlexiPacket MultiRadio features split-mount architecture as reported in Fig. 3:

FlexiPacket MultiRadio (a fully outdoor microwave radio)

FlexiPacket Hub (a Carrier Ethernet switch, which acts as hub).

1.3.1 FlexiPacket Hub

FlexiPacket Hub is a carrier grade Ethernet switch, which supports multiple radio directions.

The resulting solution is a best-in-class microwave radio node.

It offers advanced Ethernet processing features as well as maximum flexibility to support TDM traffic via circuit emulation.

Access interfaces include Fast and Gigabit Ethernet, E1 and channelized STM-1.

Unique reliability is achieved thanks to state of the art component and support of protected configurations, TDM tributary protection and Ethernet protection.

The FlexiPacket Hub, as part of the Nokia Siemens Networks Carrier Switches portfolio, allows a smooth integration in a Carrier Ethernet Transport (CET) network, ensuring end to end network design, including advanced QoS, Synchronization and OAM.

Different hardware versions of the FlexiPacket Hub will be available:

FlexiPacket Hub 2200 (Fig. 4 and Fig. 5), modular version for large hub sites (only for the Full Packet Mode)

FlexiPacket Hub1200 (Fig. 6, Fig. 7 and Fig. 8), compact version for tail sites in small hubs (only for the Full Packet Mode). It's available in two versions: Fixed (Fig. 7) and Modular (Fig. 8).

FlexiPacket "FirstMile" (Fig. 9 and Fig. 10) is a compact indoor device optimized for tail (one radio direction) and chain (two radio directions) applications (only for the Full Packet Mode).

FlexiPacket HUB 800 ( from Fig. 11 to Fig. 14), flexible indoor unit (IDU) which can be used for tail, hub and edge application in the mobile backhaul, providing up to 12 ODU directions in the full packet mode and 8 directions in the Hybrid mode.

1.6 FlexiPacket MultiRadio in stand-alone configuration (Full Packet Mode)

The innovative outdoor unit design, with GbE standard interface, opens the way to real cost optimization in the backhaul network.

FlexiPacket MultiRadio may be used in stand-alone configuration (i.e. w/o dedicated indoor units), particularly useful in tail sites enabling direct interconnection to Base Stations.

In 3G sites with Ethernet Node Bs, the FlexiPacket MultiRadio can be connected directly to the Ethernet interface of the Node B.

The overall network CAPEX is minimized, thanks to the fully outdoor solution in the cell site and the compact node solution in hub sites.

In hub site, a real pay-as-you-grow solution is guaranteed by the flexible architecture of the FlexiPacket Microwave, both in terms of number of outdoor units and of indoor unit line cards.

Moreover the scalability of the radio allows using the same platform throughout the network, with both investment and operation savings.

WARNING Please, skip this chapter if the course is about the FlexiPacket MultiRadio

2.1 FlexiPacket Radio Introduction

FlexiPacket Radio is a reliable and flexible microwave radio, which efficiently transports Ethernet traffic in RF bands from 7 GHz up to 38 GHz.

FlexiPacket Radio can be used in different transmission networks: mobile networks, fixed networks or private networks.

FlexiPacket Radio is the outdoor unit of Nokia Siemens Networks FlexiPacket Micro-wave: a new packet microwave system designed to meet the requirements of evolved transport networks with the target of minimizing the operator Total Ownership Costs.

FlexiPacket Microwave joins together the benefits of an advanced scalable microwave radio and of a real carrier grade Ethernet nodal solution.

FlexiPacket Microwave is the means of deploying a cost-effective microwave infrastructure for 3G, WiMAX and LTE backhaul, high speed wireless Internet networks, fixed broadband access backhaul and private wireless networks.

FlexiPacket Microwave is the right solution to design advanced mobile backhaul networks based on Ethernet transport. The solution is conceived both for pure packet and hybrid (TDM+packet) networks.

2.6 FlexiPacket Radio in stand-alone configuration

The innovative outdoor unit design, with GbE standard interface, opens the way to real cost optimization in the backhaul network.

FlexiPacket Radio may be used in stand-alone configuration (i.e. w/o dedicated indoor units), particularly useful in tail sites enabling direct interconnection to Base Stations.

In 3G sites with Ethernet Node Bs, the FlexiPacket Radio can be connected directly to the Ethernet interface of the Node B.
