To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Indian independence, Flicks in the Sticks WORLD brings you a short season of films from a country with one of the biggest and most diverse cinema industries on Earth. From the fairy-tale song-and-dance spectacle of Bollywood blockbusters (Devdas) to the films of internationally renowned directors such as Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!) and Deepa Mehta (Water), and the recent heart-rending, BAFTA-winning hit Lion, we offer a colourful, fascinating glimpse into a different world.

Playing at selected Flicks in the Sticks venues in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and Worcestershire, many of the screenings will be accompanied by free Indian snacks, meals and activities – full details at ARTSALIVE.CO.UK

DEVDAS PGDirector: Sanjay Leela BhansaliShah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri DixitIndia, 2002, 2 hours 58 minutes, subtitlesSat 17 Jun 6.30pm Escleyside Hall, Michaelchurch Escley (with meal)

An epitome of all that’s wonderful about Bollywood movies, this spectacular, swooningly romantic saga of timeless love made Shah Rukh Khan a global superstar. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Devdas Mukherjee grew up being indulged by his lovely playmate Paro (the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai). They existed only for each other oblivious of the differences of status and background, and between them grew a bond that would never break. When Devdas is forbidden to marry the woman he loves he takes to drink and his life spirals out of control. A riot of colour, glorious costumes, fabulous sets, the sumptuous song and dance numbers alone are worth the price of entry.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film BAFTA

LION PGDirector: Garth DavisDev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, David Wenham, Sunny Pawar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Aditya Roy KapoorAustralia, 2016, 1 hour 58 minutesTue 23 May 7.30pm The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch

Sat 27 May 7.30pm Waverton Village Hall

Sat 10 June 7.30pm Cawley Hall, Eye (6pm for pre-booked Indian feast)

Mon 12 June 7.30pm The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock

Sat 17 June 7.30pm Upton-on-Severn Memorial Hall (with Indian snacks)

Thu 29 June 7.15pm SpArC Theatre, Bishops Castle (with free Sari demo/workshop and Indian treats)

Not strictly Indian, but set largely in the heart of the subcontinent, this recent film is adapted from Saroo Brierley’s memoir A Long Way Home. Patel plays Saroo, adopted from a Kolkata orphanage as a young boy by an Australian couple, and who, as an adult, is haunted by memories of his past. Discovering Google Earth, he begins an obsessive search for his biological family, withdrawing from both his adoptive parents and his girlfriend on a journey to find them. Addressing the emotional complexities of adoption with depth and clarity, Lion is a hugely involving and moving true story boasting excellent performances and stunning cinematography.

“Lion sneaks up on you as it proceeds to pluck your heart strings with its little cat feet” rogerebert.com

Winner of two BAFTAs including Dev Patel (Best Supporting Actor)

SALAAM BOMBAY! 15Director: Mira NairShafiq Syed, Sarfuddin Qurrassi, Aneeta Kanwar, Raghubir YadavIndia, 1988, 1 hour 52 minutes, subtitlesFriday 30 June 8pm The Market Theatre, Ledbury (with Indian snacks)

From the director of Monsoon Wedding and Queen of Katwe, this is a superb, hugely emotional portrait of the lives of India’s street kids. Abandoned by

his mother, Krishna is told he can only return home when he has earned 500 rupees to pay for his brother’s bike that he had trashed. Krishna ends up in Bombay’s red-light district among the drug dealers and prostitutes. Soon Krishna knows no other life than hustling and stealing.

Terrifically well-acted and beautifully filmed, this is a gritty, unsentimental but surprisingly cheerful portrait of street life full of incident and colourful characters. Shot entirely on location with its child actors recruited from the streets, this has a rare authority and absolute compassion.

Nominated for both the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and BAFTA.

Winner of the Audience Award and Golden Camera Cannes Film Festival 1988.

WATER 15 Director: Deepa MehtaLisa Ray, John Abraham, Seema BiswasCanada, 2005, 1 hour 58 minutes, subtitlesTue 23 May 7.30pm Garway Village Hall (with Indian snacks)

The third of her ‘elemental trilogy’ following Fire and Earth, Deepa Mehta’s powerful, sensual drama is set in the holy city of Varanasi in the 1930s. It examines the plight of a group of widows forced into isolation and poverty by the harsh restrictions of Indian society. In particular, Sadananda, an 8-year-old widow whose life is in effect already over, and the beautiful, headstrong Kalyani whose forbidden romance breaks all taboos. The widows’ struggle against age-old oppression is set against the backdrop of India’s struggle for independence in a beautiful film whose images linger long in the mind’s eye.

Winner of three Genies (the Canadian equivalent of the BAFTAs) in 2006
