Flight Operations Group Mini-Biographies Committee Leaders TERRY BUCKLAND Chair of the overall Group and for RAeS Liaison Terry is Chief Tutor (Standards) at IAGO Flight Training and is an examiner on Boeing 777, 787 and A320. He spent thirteen years with the UK CAA as a Training Inspector, and Deputy Head Training Standards and was tasked with introducing ATQP to UK and Europe. He spent many years in British Airways with seven management jobs, including Head of Technical and Training Boeing 777 Fleet, Flight Manager (Technical) Gatwick and a short period as Chief Pilot Gatwick. He was the first European pilot to be fully rated on Boeing 787. Flew B707, B737, B707, B747, TriStar, DC-10 A320, A330, B777 and of course the B787. JOHNNY BORUCH Vice Chair of the overall group and Vice-Chair Flight Path Management Johnny spent 17 years as a construction professional before making the transition to aviation. He moved on to become a Construction Project Strategy Consultant, with a specialism in Risk Management, and an experienced facilitator. He began his aviation career as a Flight Instructor at Denham Aerodrome, where he conducted ground school and flying lessons for students undertaking Bucks New University’s Air Transport BSc (Hons) Course. He went on to join the West London Aero Club as a Flight Instructor at White Waltham airfield. He gained his first foothold in commercial aviation through ad-hoc work as a Second Pilot for a private turboprop operator, flying business clients to destinations around Europe, including to the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. In 2012, Johnny joined Monarch Airlines as a First Officer, where for five years he operated Airbus A320/A321 aircraft to destinations throughout their short-haul network. In addition to his flying role, he was part of a team which established and delivered Monarch’s Line-Oriented Quality Evaluation (LOQE) programme in support of their Alternative Training and Qualification Programme (ATQP). He was also a member of Monarch’s Pilot Recruitment Team, where he helped to design and deliver a new Direct Entry Pilot recruitment process. Johnny moved into long-haul in 2017, when he joined Virgin Atlantic’s A330 operation, progressing onto the A350 in 2019. He has in excess of 5,500 hours total flying time in his logbook, including more than 4,500 hours operating Airbus aircraft (A350, A330, A321, A320). TERRY BUCKLAND Chair of the overall Group and for RAeS Liaison

Terry is Chief Tutor (Standards) at IAGO Flight Training and is an examiner on Boeing 777, 787 and A320. He spent thirteen years with the UK CAA as a Training Inspector, and Deputy Head Training Standards and was tasked with introducing ATQP to UK and Europe. He spent many years in British Airways with seven management jobs, including Head of Technical and Training Boeing 777 Fleet, Flight Manager (Technical) Gatwick and a short period as Chief Pilot Gatwick. He was the first European pilot to be fully rated on Boeing 787. Flew B707, B737, B707, B747, TriStar, DC-10 A320, A330, B777 and of course the B787.

JOHNNY BORUCH Vice Chair of the overall group and Vice-Chair Flight Path Management

Johnny spent 17 years as a construction professional before making the transition to aviation. He was a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, specialising in averting and resolving construction disputes (his MSc is in Construction Law and Arbitration). He moved on to become a Construction Project Strategy Consultant, with a specialism in Risk Management, and an experienced facilitator. He began his aviation career as a Flight Instructor at Denham Aerodrome, where he conducted ground school and flying lessons for students undertaking Bucks New University’s Air Transport BSc (Hons) Course. He went on to join the West London Aero Club as a Flight Instructor at White Waltham airfield. Neil is a retired British Airways Senior Manager and Management Consultant. An Air Cadet and Flying Scholarship recipient, he worked for British Airways for 26 years in I T, Flight Operations and Business Transformation. He was a volunteer manager for BA’s emergency customer support centre for 15 years and was part of the airline’s co-ordination team for both 9/11 and Millennium Night. After British Airways he worked for 12 years as a Stakeholder Engagement, IT Security and Business Change Consultant for major public and private sector businesses. He managed industrial relations for a staff group of 5,500 people, acted as mentor to undergraduate students and represented the company on disability issues. KATHY ABBOTT Chair for Flight Path Management

Serves as the Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Flight Deck Human Factors to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on human performance and human error, systems design and analysis, flight crew training/qualification, and flight crew operations and procedures. Developed and applied FAA/international regulatory material and policies for human factors, flight deck automation, pilot-controller phraseology, aircraft certification. Involved extensively in accident, incident, and other safety data analysis. FAA liaison to industry and other government and international agencies dealing with human factors. Formerly conducted research in flight operations and flight deck design at NASA. Private pilot. Familiarization training in 737, 747-400, 777, MD-11, A320/330/340.

JOHN BARNETT Academic Reviewer

John began his third level education by studying Electrical Engineering at Queen’s University, Belfast in 1968. Then worked in the power generation industry for over ten years in various power stations in Ireland and on oil platforms in the North Sea. In 1982 he became a Signalling Engineer with Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) and later Infrastructure Executive which combined track and signalling. Sat on the inquiry panels of several rail accidents and became interested in “Human Factors”. PPL since 1991. Retired from NIR in 2003, returning to Queen’s University to study the psychology of accidents, both rail and aviation. Completed PhD in Cognitive Psychology in 2005 then worked as a consultant on railway projects in the UK and overseas.

HOWARD BURTON Chair for Membership

Howard is an experienced British Airways Captain with more than 42 years flying experience. He has flown most Boeing and Airbus types and is currently an instructor and examiner on the B777 and B787, having previously done similar on the Airbus. In this role he has instructed and examined many other national airlines. Howard is also Managing Director of Black Knight Holdings, a company specialising in provision of expert witness, mediation and loss adjustment to the aviation industry. He is a Member of the UK Flight Safety Committee and a Fellow of the RAeS. He is a Member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots and was awarded the prestigious Master Air Pilot by the Honourable Company for his work in aviation. Howard started his aviation career with 12 years in the RAF as a Jaguar fighter pilot, instructor and examiner. On leaving the

RAF he was a member of the reserve forces flying at weekends and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace.

NICK BUTCHER Chair for Cabin Safety and Emergency Evacuation and Vice-Chair for SAFITA part 2

Nick held several senior positions in the UK CAA, over 20+ plus years dealing with cabin safety issues. He was Head of the Flight Operations Cabin Safety Office, driving Accident and incident follow-up actions including Manchester (1985), and Kegworth (1989). He was responsible for amending UK crew safety and survival training requirements, many of which are now EASA regulations. Nick undertook many cabin safety research projects in conjunction with Cranfield University. He was a member of JAA Study Groups including for development of JAR-OPS 1 and JAR 25/26, and was involved in Flight deck security prior to and following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He led reporting requirements for disruptive passenger incidents. Nick has twenty years’

involvement in aeroplane certification, mainly in respect of emergency evacuation. He was Chair of the EASA JOEB A380 Cabin Crew Subgroup and member of EASA A380 - Panel 8. He retired from the CAA in 2006. He is Lead Author of two FOG Specialist Papers and was awarded the RAeS Silver Medal in 2014.

FRANK CHAPMAN

Frank has a Masters in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. He was an RAF Pilot/Test Pilot from 1980-1996 flying Harrier GR3 and F4M operationally and then worked as a test pilot on most of the RAF fast jet inventory from 1990-1996. He undertook Test Pilot training at EPNER, France from 1989-90, then returned to the UK and Farnborough 1990-92, primarily involved with Cockpit Systems development for Eurofighter, helmet-mounted displays and electro-optical systems. He then went to Eglin AFB Test Wing from1992-96 developing F16 and weapons systems. After the RAF, he joined Monarch Airlines from 1997-2003 on the A320 and A330. In parallel, he worked as a Test Pilot and Senior Coach for the PFA/LAA UK, and also flew regularly as a display

pilot for the Shuttleworth Collection UK. Frank moved to Airbus at the beginning of 2004, primarily for A380 Development and Certification. As the only Airbus Test Pilot with both probe and drogue and boom refuelling experience, he became the A330 Tanker project pilot for flight controls development. He is currently the A350XWB lead project test pilot, but is current on all Airbus types including A400M. Frank is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Society of Experimental Test Pilots, Liveryman of the Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators, and a Member of the Institute of Linguists. He has 14,000 hours on 150 types powered aircraft and 120 glider types.

JOHN COX Chair for SAFITA

John is Chief Executive Officer of Safety Operating Systems and is a 48-year aviation veteran with experience as a corporate pilot, airline pilot, instructor, test pilot and safety professional. In 2005, he retired from US Airways after 25 years and 14,000 flying hours to found Safety Operating Systems, which has grown into a dynamic company with clients worldwide including airlines, business flight operations, legal firms, manufacturers and government regulators. John holds a Masters in Business Administration from Daniel Webster College, and is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Aviation Safety Program. Since 2006, he has been an instructor in aviation safety at the University of Southern California. John is a Fellow of the Royal

Aeronautical Society, a Liveryman in the Honorable Company of Air Pilots, a Certified Registered Safety Professional and a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators. He has received numerous awards include the Flight Safety Foundation’s Laura Taber Barbour Award, The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators’ Sir James Martin Award, the ALPA Air Safety Award, the US Airways Air Safety Award. For the last eight years has been the aviation analyst for NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and the Weather Channel and regularly appears in the news media worldwide regarding aviation safety. John writes the weekly column “Ask the Captain” for USA Today’s website.

ROBERT SCOTT Chair for Conference

Robert initially studied mechanical engineering before joining the Royal Navy as a fixed-wing pilot. After an enjoyable military career he moved into the airlines where he became active in training, training development, management, and recruitment. He also represented IFALPA as Regional Vice President (Asia East). After leaving the airlines he became Director of Operations for a Swiss-based charter company and was also Accountable Manager for their UK AOC. Since 2003 he has been busy as an aviation consultant, mainly in the fields of operations management, feasibility studies, training development and researching the impact of technology on cockpit procedures. He completed a General MBA course in 2001 and continues with courses that are relevant to his current activities. He has held UK (JAA), FAA and Transport Canada ATPL’s and has almost 20,000

hours experience as a pilot. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a member of the Society’s Flight Operations Group. As a member of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors he works with non-profit organisations in the areas of operations management, performance assessment and business development.

Flew Phantoms in the Air Defence fighter role, commanded an E-3D Sentry squadron and RAF Waddington and undertook deployed operational command duties. Staff duties included aviation and airspace policy formulation, management of the UK low flying system, and regulation of all military flying activity. Active in a wide range of industry bodies including the Flight Safety Foundation’s European Advisory Committee, the UK National Air Traffic Management Advisory Committee and EASA’s commercial air transport collaborative analysis group. KIRSTY ARNOLD Vice-Chair Cabin Safety

Joined CHIRP in 1996 and was part of its development into the current status following expansion from Flight Crew to include Cabin Crew, Engineers, General Aviation, etc., and eventually Maritime. Responsible for the CHIRP Cabin Crew programme from its inception until 2012. Was also the Secretariat for ICASS (International Confidential Aviation Security Systems) Group whilst at CHIRP and a member of IOSH (Institution of Occupational Health and Safety). Prior to joining Virgin Atlantic held several contracts with Babcock International Group Heathrow (baggage operations), ThyssenKrupp Heathrow (jet bridges) and TAG Global Training. Previously an In-flight Customer Experience Safety and Quality Partner at British Airways and flew as cabin crew on B747

and B777 aircraft. Currently Health and Safety Advisor, Corporate Safety at Virgin Atlantic. Cabin safety lead for new aircraft entering service and retrofits - currently involved in the A350 and A330-200 projects. Leads investigations into significant occupational safety incidents/accidents within cabin crew and flight operations.

GLENN BRADLEY

Currently Interim Head of Flight Operations at the CAA responsible for oversight of all commercial aircraft operations, ATOs, NCC and SPO activity. Previously Flight Ops Manager - Aeroplanes role for 2 ½ years overseeing fixed-wing commercial activity. Before that, 9 years at easyJet in various roles including Head of Aircraft Ops, responsible for safety, technical, cabin safety, EFB, performance and airports/routes. Also a Functional Check Flight Capt for A320 family aircraft as well as TRI and TRE. Prior to that, 9 years at GB Airways as Flight Manager Technical covering similar areas and check flight activity. After completing a BSc(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, 12 years in the RAF mainly flying Tornado GR1/GR1As based in UK and Germany and flying in operational theatres of Northern and

Southern Iraq, also as an IRE and ACO. With a period as a Simulator Instructor on Harrier GR5/7. Still a current A320 Capt, TRI, TRE, SE and Training Inspector.

KIERAN BYRNE Vice-Chair Liaison

Graduated from the University of Salford in 2013 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aircraft Engineering with Pilot Studies. Spent four years at Monarch Airlines in Flight Operations before moving to TUI as the Fleet Support Manager. Currently responsible for the Fleet department’s Safety, Quality and Flight Operations Support functions in the company. A committee member of the Manchester Branch of the RAeS. Achieved an RAeS NE Rowe Certificate of Merit for a flight operations focused lecture and paper. Also has PPL flying experience.

CHRIS DACEY 44 years of commercial aviation, the last 23 in command of BA’s Heavy Jets with a further 11 years as a co-pilot. 5 years with AirUK / BIA on their domestic services. 2 years with a leading independent Flight Training establishment, preparing candidates for hteir professional CAFU checks. 3 years in general aviation in East Africa, mostly undertaking charter work around wilderness areas in support of tourism. Owner and operator of Slinfold aerodrome (CAA’s definition 2B).

JOHN FAULKNER Went to Pangbourne in 1952 (then primarily a merchant navy training college). From there entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth at the age of sixteen. After graduation did the required sea time and then gained wings with the RAF. Apart from other flying postings served on aircraft carriers as a fighter pilot. Moved to Australia on joining Qantas in 1967 and flown Boeing 707,747, and 767 aircraft. Total flight time is 12,800 hours. Retired as Manager Flight Safety and Deputy Head of Safety of Qantas Airways in 1994. Amongst other duties introduced CRM into the airline Was then appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Australian Air Traffic System on its formation in 1995. Was also Chairman of the Board Safety Committee. After the maximum period of five years left the Board in June 2000. Conducted a number of safety audits of airlines from regional to major. In 1998 was a member of a Committee to examine Flight Safety Management throughout the Australian Defence Forces. Since retirement waas involved in setting up and teaching on an Aviation Degree at the University of New South Wales. He is still a Senior Visiting Fellow. In the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honors was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the aviation industry, particularly in air safety and as a contributor to tertiary education programmes. A Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Past President of the Australian Division. A member the RAeS Learned Society Board.

A 36 year career as a military and civilian Fast Jet Pilot, Instructor and Examiner. Focused on learning and development, a qualified Aircrew, Executive and Business Coach specialising in pilot performance, welfare and personal growth. Additionally, expertise extends to Human Factors, Performance and Crew Resource Management. A font line fast jet military pilot on operations having flown over 4500 hours, was latterly responsible for the delivery of Ab-Initio Human factors training to all Royal Air Force and Royal Navy Pilots. Was also responsible for the cognitive development and performance of military pilots and instructors through a unique Performance Coaching Programme and Human Performance for Instructors Course as well as a military and civilian Airmanship model. Also undertook bespoke flying training projects as an independent

service consultant for defence senior officers. In January 2015, was seconded to work with the UK CAA and left the RAF in September 2016 to become Director of Elite Performance Training Ltd (Aviation Services). Soon to return to the CAA as Business Lead, responsible for introducing a national Pilot Peer Assistance Network (P PAN) for all commercial pilots, post the German Wings tragedy. Has recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching Psychology and is currently studying for a Masters Degree. Additionally, a court member and Warden of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots, and a founder Chairman of their Careers and Education Committee. Has been the Secretary of a NATO Human Factors working group.

PIETER ‘T HART

Trained at KLM Flight Academy and joined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in 1995. At present Captain Boeing 777 and 787. Previously flown on the Boeing 747-300, 737 and 747-400. Academic career -obtained a degree in law (Dutch and International) from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen; in 2007 a PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1991-1992 military service with the Royal Netherlands Army as a Ground Liaison Officer with 322 SQN Leeuwarden. Since 1992 Royal Netherlands Army reserve and currently Major and Liaison Officer with the Military Court of Justice.

BOB HORTON

Robert (Bob) was born in Stafford in 1955 and joined the Royal Navy in 1973 as a Seaman Officer. In 1977 he transferred to the Fleet Air Arm and became a Commando Pilot; initially on the Wessex Mk5 and then the Sea King Mk4. Robert was involved in active service in the Falklands conflict in which he was Mentioned in Dispatches for gallantry. Shortly thereafter, he was selected for test pilot training at the Empire Test Pilots’ School and completed the course in 1985. This was followed by 4 years at RAE Bedford where he was involved in low visibility flight trials and active control technology research for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross and the RAeS, Alan Marsh medal. Robert returned to ETPS as a tutor before being sent back to the commando world as Commanding Officer of the training squadron (707 NAS). Robert’s final tour

in the Royal Navy was as Commanding Officer of the rotary test squadron at Boscombe Down. Having left the Royal Navy in 1999, Robert joined the then Jersey European Airways; initially on the SD360 followed by the Bombardier Dash 8 Classic and then the Q400 as Technical Pilot on the turbo-prop fleet. In 2004 Robert became Fleet Manager of the Jet Fleet flying the BAE 146. He was then tasked with project managing the introduction to service of the Embraer 195 and 175 fleets into the business (now called Flybe). Additionally, Robert was the deputy flight operations director and a Form 4 Post Holder for the flight operation. In 2015, Robert left Flybe and set up his own business as a flight operations and safety consultant. A job he continues to this day. Robert has two sons (one a pilot with BA, the other an IT lead engineer) and lives with Bernadette in Somerset.

JOHN HUTCHINSON

Joined the Royal Air Force in 1955 and spent eight years in the service. Did a Squadron tour flying the Avro Shackleton in Singapore and then spent three years as a Flying Instructor and Instrument Rating Examiner on the Jet Provost. Left the Royal Air Force in 1963 and joined McAlpine Aviation at Luton Airport. While there flew a variety of light single and twin engined aircraft and was appointed Chief Pilot of McAlpine in his final year there. Joined British Airways in 1966 as a co-pilot on the Boeing 707 and then transferred to the Boeing 747 in 1971. Gained his command on the VC10 in 1976. Joined the Concorde fleet in 1977 where he spent the next 15 years until retirement. During that time became a Concorde Route Check Captain and a British Airways pilot

selector as well as working for BBC television as a Presenter of Airshow programmes. Was also closely involved with promoting the Concorde/QE2 packages on offer in the second half of the 1980’s and lectured regularly on the QE2 and other Cunard ships. Since his retirement in 1992, has worked as a consultant to the United States High Speed Research Programme. Has regularly provided professional advice on aviation matters and has acted as an Expert Witness on many occasions in aviation related legal actions. Has continued to lecture about aviation on a wide variety of cruise ships as well as lecturing to a variety of organisations and conferences around the world. He is a Past Master of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots of London and is a Fellow of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Royal Institute of Navigation. He has flown over 70 different aircraft types and kept his hand in flying an Auster Aiglet which he shared with three friends until retiring from the syndicate last year.

VASILEIOS KLOUDAS Vasileios is an Airline Captain with Flight Operations Management Experience. Currently having the role of Chief Pilot in Olympic Air. Previous roles included Head of CRM, Deputy Flight Standards Manager, A320 Fleet Officer. Types flown include the A320, DH4, DH8, EMB-145. An active UKCAA TRI/TRE, really enjoying delivering and designing training and development activities for Flight Crew. Holds a Master’s Degree in Air Transport Management from Cranfield University.

JUSSI LAAKSONEN

Jussi is a Safety Manager and a Compliance Monitoring Manager at Nordic Regional Airlines, Norra. He is also an Embraer 190 Captain, flying when not working at the office. His fixed wing career started in 2004 as an airline pilot and he started his Safety Manager position in 2007. He has also held TRI/TRE as well as CRM instructor certifications. Before joining the airline, he worked as a helicopter pilot and instructor. During his 17 years long rotary wing career he worked for 12 years as a HEMS pilot as well as a Group Chief at a Helsinki based medical rescue helicopter. During that time, he was flying BO105 and EC135 helicopters. He holds a MSc degree in Air Safety Management from London City University and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

MARK LEWIS

Joined the RAF in 1991 and flew the Harrier and Hawk. Attended the Empire Test Pilots’ School in 1999. Three years of Harrier testing were followed by a return to the School as a tutor in 2003 and appointment as Principal Tutor Fixed Wing in 2005. Joined Cathay Pacific in 2006, flying the Boeing 747-200. Long-term ambition to work in civil flight test was realised when the opportunity to join Rolls-Royce arose. Is now engaged in flight test and airline technical liaison at Rolls-Royce and flies most Airbus types, the Boeing 747-200, the Boeing 787-9 (with Virgin Atlantic Airways) and the Rolls-Royce Mk. XIX Spitfire. Ex-Chief Test Pilot for Rolls- Royce, now at Airbus.

MATTHEW MOXON Caught the flying bug at a very young age; joined and flew with the CCF(RAF) benefitting from a gliding scholarship. 2004-2007 BSc Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies at the University of Leeds; 1st class honours and a PPL(A). 2007-2011 PhD Thermodynamic analysis of the Brayton-cycle gas-turbine under equilibrium chemistry assumptions Cranfield University, then post-doc at the Cranfield University Technology Centre looking at various novel thermodynamic cycles using an extended version of the code written during the PhD. Worked briefly as a consultant for SCITEK Consultants Ltd before moving into a permanent position at Rolls-Royce, working variously in the Advanced Concepts Centre, the Strategic Research Centre, and now the Future Technologies Group, looking at all manner of interesting things, focussing on the conceptual

design of distributed propulsion electric aircraft, securing a number of patents in this domain (and others). Used to fly various powered aircraft (SEP land w/tail wheel endorsement) and gliders (FAI silver badge) for fun and to learn in support of my design work. Hoping to do so again one day when life permits.

TIM SINDALL

20 years as a pilot in the RAF, mainly flying strategic and tactical air transport aeroplanes around the world including three years on exchange with the RAAF. At RAE Bedford managed the BLEU Flight developing low visibility approach aids together with trialling GPWS and promoting the civil use of PAPIs. After four years with Laker Airways flying BAC 1-11s joined the UK CAA including time as Head of the Flight Operations Inspectorate (Aeroplanes) and as the UK member of the JAA Operations Committee and ICAO Flight Operations Panel. Wrote and published operational guidance for both GPWS/TAWS and TCAS/ACAS II in CAPs/TGLs. Whilst in office flew the line with BCAL (BAC 1-11), Dan Air (A300-B4) and Monarch (A300-600) plus the A320 and numerous small

single and twin piston-engine aeroplanes. In retirement gave voluntary service to CHIRP and chaired its Board of Trustees (involving both aviation and maritime) for four years. Contributions to the FOG have been mainly on matters affecting the safety regulation of flight operations.

MALCOLM SUTHERLAND After a successful business career at CEO level, commenced flying career on the 737 with Astraeus. Then joined Zoom Airlines, holding Fleet Manager and DFO roles whilst flying the 767. Between 2008 and 2015 was with Thomas Cook Airlines as Boeing Fleet Manager, GM Flight Crew and Aircraft Operations Director. The following three years were spent at Virgin Atlantic, most recently as Director Flight Crew and Training. In April 2018 Malcolm re-joined Thomas Cook’s UK airline as Director Flight Operations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

First instructional flight in 1971 at Cheshire Air Training School, age 14. Gained PPL. Joined Liverpool University Air Squadron flying the Bulldog T1, whilst doing BSc(Hons) Mech Eng, 4 years sandwich degree at Liverpool Poly. Joined the RAF and Flew JP3A, JP5A. Gained wings on Hawk T1, then 151F Sqn TWU. Transferred to helicopters flying Gazelle then Wessex in Hong Kong (28 Sqn) and Northern Ireland (72 Sqn). (2,000 hours total on helicopters). Finished illustrious RAF career as 10 AEF staff pilot, flying the chipmunk at RAF Woodvale. Joined Air 2000 on Boeing 757 in 1988, command 1992. Stayed in same company flying worldwide, becoming First Choice. Thomson and then Tui. Also flew Boeing 767 and 737Ng. Captain on VIP trips around Africa and

Asia. Over 23,000 total hours, of which 19,500 are in command. A Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society since May 1999 and also an Associate Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Since retiring from flying and having had no training background, took a CRMT course, in order to give something back to the industry in the form of Human Factors training. Also mentoring at University of Exeter and a consultant with Wings Alliance. Passionate about promoting aviation and engineering at every level, as without these sciences our future is bleak. Also thoroughly enjoys organising social events and attending them as well!

HUGH WEBBON

Having trained as a sponsored cadet at the College of Air Training, Hamble in 1966, enjoyed a 35-year career with BEA and British Airways, holding both Union and Management positions. On the 747 and Tristar was an IRE/TRE and on the 747 and 747 – 400 a Check pilot. Following compulsory retirement, worked for Singapore Airlines for 5 years, enjoying both flying and management roles. After more than 20,000 hours flying time, joined The LOSA Collaborative in 2006, running LOSA projects for airlines, making external observations, conducting data analytics for the LOSA Reports and assisting many of the World’s airlines in the formulation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementation of safety change.

RICHARD WEEKS

Over 35 years’ experience as a pilot. A 16 year career with the RAF in various roles. Attended the Central Flying School where and qualified as a flying instructor. Went on to qualify as an Instrument Rating Examiner and qualified as an A2 instructor. After completing the USAF instructor training, spent 3 years instructing at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training School in Texas, USA. Returned to No. 32 (The Royal) Squadron and spent the last years with the RAF running the pilot training programme for the Royal Squadron. Joined NetJets in 2002 as Director of Training and Standards for the NetJets AOC. Was also Head of Training for the NetJets Type Rating Training Organisation and was a TRI/TRE on the HS125. Now Director of Safety and Compliance responsible for managing the NetJets safety management system to identify hazards, manage the associated risks, and make recommendations to increase the safety performance and

culture of NetJets Europe. Also responsible for managing the compliance monitoring programme in order to ensure that all NetJets operations are performed safely and in compliance with the Company, national, and international regulations. A fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Liveryman of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots.

DAVE WILLSHER Vice-Chair for UK Flight Safety Committee Liaison Training Standards Captain on B777 & B787 with British Airways. Previously B744 with Cathay Pacific as well as ATPs in the Highlands & Islands and B757/767 in BA. Some experience of GA flying as an Assistant Flying Instructor in the late 90s. Involved in Training delivery at BA since 2002 in various guises from Training Co‐Pilot all the way through to Training Management.
